In this paper, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes for physical layer security. Generally, high operational complexity is required for cooperative beamforming withmultiple relays because of the required information exchange and synchronization among the relays. On the other hand, while it is desirable to reduce the number of relays participating in cooperative beamforming because of the associated complexity problem, doing so may degrade the coding gain of cooperative beamforming. Hence, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes, where only two of the available relays are selected for beamforming and data transmission. The proposed schemes introduce a selection gain which partially compensates for the decrease in coding gain due to limiting the number of participating relays to two. Both the cases where full and only partial channel state information are available for relay selection and cooperative beamforming are considered. Analytical and simulation results for the proposed schemes show improved secrecy capacities compared to existing physical layer security schemes employing cooperative relays.

In this paper, an adjustable multiple relay selection (MRS) scheme for cooperative communication with amplify-and-forward (AF) relay under frequency selective channels is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the relays are ordered firstly by the steady-state mean square error (MSE), then the relays are sequentially selected out from N relays and the number of cooperating relays is adjusted dynamically according to the steady-state mean square joint error (MSJE). The aim of this work is to dynamically estimate the optimum number No of cooperating relays. Optimum means the minimum number of cooperating relays, No, achieving the minimum level of steady-state MSJE. Numerical results verify the analyses and show that the scheme can adaptively adjust the number of cooperating relays, and outperform conventional relay selection schemes. Hence, the proposed scheme provides better tradeoff between BER performance and spectral efficiency and to save more energy in cooperative wireless networks.

Retransmission signals from relays to destination when the destination fails to decode received signal from the source in Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) protocol make the destination receive signals more reliably. With using omni -direction antenna in the practical system, in communication range of both the source antenna and the destination antenna, there are some relays that can be used to transmit signal to the destination. However, using all relays to transmit signal consume power and bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a new protocol in which the best relays are chosen based on threshold of distance from the source to the relay and the relay to the destination when the relays use decode- and forward (DF) protocol. Simulation results prove the efficiency of the protocol when we compare using only the best relays with using all relays to transmit signal to the destination.

In this paper, we analyze effects of positions of relays on the performance of cooperative communication networks. From this, the best relays are chosen to assist transmitting the signal to the destination or to replace the source to retransmit the signal to the destination whenever the destination incorrectly receives the signal from the source. As the results, we show the significant improvement on performance of schemes choosing best relays, which is compared to the performance of other cooperative schemes. Moreover, the simulation results that match exactly with the theoretical results prove the correctness of the analysis.
Cooperative communications using relays in wireless networks have similar effects of multiple-input and multiple-output without the need of multiple antennas at each node. To implement cooperation into a system, efficient protocols are desired. In IEEE 802.11 families such as a/b/g, mobile stations can automatically adjust transmission rates according to channel conditions. However throughput performance degradation is observed by low-rate stations in multi-rate circumstances resulting in so-called performance anomaly. In this paper, we propose active relay-based cooperative medium access control (AR-CMAC) protocol, in which active relays desiring to transmit their own data for cooperation participate in relaying, and it is designed to increase throughput as a solution to performance anomaly. We have analyzed the performance of the simplified AR-CMAC using an embedded Markov chain model to demonstrate the gain of AR-CMAC and to verify it with our simulations. Simulations in an infrastructure network with an IEEE 802.11b/g access point show noticeable improvement than the legacy schemes.

Two-way relaying scheme based on relay selection can not only achieve higher rate but also get the selection diversity gain according to the number of relays. However the scheme can not achieve combining gain because it does not consider the direct link between users. In this paper, we propose, with multiple relays, opportunistic cooperative two-way relaying scheme and incremental cooperative two-way relaying scheme which can achieve both selection diversity gain and combining gain. Simulation results show that proposed scheme outperform the conventional scheme by achieving both combining gain and selection diversity gain according to the number of relays.
This paper proposes a mechanism to increase performance using cooperative communications in IEEE 802.11 environment. Existing algorithms use one relay between a source and a destination, which is a 2 hop relay. The proposed algorithm utilizes more than one relay to complement inefficiency of using one relay. In the proposed mechanism, an AP manages network information (rate), which is used to select relays of a source by the AP. The AP notifies the selected relays to the source and neighbor nodes, and the source transmits data to the relays for cooperative communications. Moreover, relays are given to have an opportunity to send its own data right after relaying the source's data. So relays are compensated for the power to send the source's data and overall throughput is improved.
In this paper, we introduce the AF cooperative diversity with multiple relays using phase feedback. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes obtain the diversity gain according to the number of the cooperating terminals. The performance of proposed scheme using tolerable quantized feedback is close to that of proposed scheme using full feedback.

In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative routing protocol (NCRP) for wireless networks. The proposed protocol uses cooperative transmission to improve end-to-end outage probability. The broadcast nature ensures that the destination can receive a packet from the source or from the relays and if it cannot correctly decode the packet, the successful relays will start a retransmission. The NCRP protocol can skip some transmissions from the intermediate relays, thereby reducing the total power consumption. Theoretical results are derived and verified by simulation results.

This paper investigates optimal relay selection and power allocation under an aggregate power constraint for cooperative wireless sensor networks assisted by amplify-and-forward relay nodes. By considering both transmission power and circuit power consumptions, the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination node is calculated, based on which, a relay selection and power allocation scheme is developed. The core idea is to adaptively adjust the selected relays and their transmission power to maximize the received SNR according to the channel state information. The proposed scheme is derived by recasting the optimization problem into a three-layered problem-determining the number of relays to be activated, selecting the active relays, and performing power allocation among the selected relays. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides a higher received SNR and a lower bit error rate as compared to the average power allocation scheme.
