A Study of the Experiment and the Calculation Method on the Coolant Flow Rate of Engine and Vehicle Cooling System (엔진 및 차량냉각계의 냉각수유량 측정실험 및 계산방법에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the prediction method of coolant flow rates has been developed and applied to an engine and vehicle cooling system. The flow rate passing through each component of the system is very important parameter to evaluate the heat transfer process form the combustion gas to the coolant and the heat rejection process form the radiator /heater to the ambient air. However, the present study reveals that the measurement using the flowmeter fails to give practical flow rates due to its additive resistance. In contrast, the present method which uses the parallel and serial relationship of flow resistance proved to be a good tool to predict the real flow rates. It can be also used to design the cooling system in the incipient stage of engine/vehicle development . The procedure was coded to the computer program so as to use it flexibly and, in the future, to expand it into an independent design tool of the whole cooling system including the heat release and rejection.

A Study on Cooling Characteristics of Ground Source Heat Pump with Variation of Water Switching and Refrigerant Switching Methods (수절환 및 냉매절환방식에 따른 지열히트펌프의 냉방특성에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the cooling performance for a water-to-water 10 RT ground source heat pump by using the water switching and refrigerant switching method. The test of water-to-water ground source heat pump was measured by varying the compressor speed, load side inlet temperature, and ground heat source side temperature. The cooling capacity and refrigerant mass flow rate of the heat pump increased with increasing ground heat source temperature. But COP of the heat pump decreased with increasing ground heat source temperature. As a result, the water switching method with counter flow, compared to a refrigerant switching method, improves the cooling capacity and COP by approximately 6~9% in average, respectively.

  • This test is to conduct applied research the reaction area of the Ti-cast metal body which is made use of Dental Phosphate-silica alumina bonded investment material selling at a market, and the cooling method is how to effect on the acicular. The experimentation is as followings, 1. Experimental specimens After invest with Dental Phosphate-silica alumina bonded investment material, the $10{\times}10{\times}1.0mm^3$ wax pattern was casted by Dental high vacuum argon centrifugal casting machine. 2. Test We can analyze SEM/EDS, XRD utilize the fractography(an optical microscope). 3. Conclusion The pure cast metal body constituted of reaction products layer, stability layer and contamination layer. This pure cast have no connection with the cooling condition. The pure Titanium shows difference in a component distribution according to the cooling condition. Through this experimentation we can establish that acicular in the pure Ti-cast metal is consist of Hexagonal structure a=2.9505$\AA$, c=4.6826$\AA$.

  • In this study, energy saving performance of outdoor temperature reset control strategy for central cooling system is researched by experiments. Outdoor temperature reset control is the control method to change indoor air set temperature according to outdoor air temperature change. The range of indoor air set temperature is represented by the comfort temperature range of indoor air temperature offered from ASHRAE and indoor air set temperature is programmed between $22^{\circ}C$ and $27^{\circ}C$ by outdoor air temperature $20^{\circ}C{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ in summer. As a result of applying outdoor temperature reset control to central cooling system, the suggested control method shows better performances of energy savings than the conventional method which indoor temperature maintains constantly.

  • The fuel charge is getting higher in navigation cost. Therefore, shipowners try to find the method for reducing oil consumption. ESS(Energy Saving System) is one of he method. ESS is the system consisted with two inverters, ESS control unit and monitoring system. Two inverters control two main sea water cooling pumps. In the ESS control Unit, the control algorithm finds optimized point to decrease a power consumption of main sea water cooling pumps. Monitoring system observes ESS not to work improperly. ESS is experimented in the laboratory with real condition and analyzed in every view. After experiment, the result of the experiment shows that the control algorithm works correctly and safely. ESS has a plan to be operated in the ship soon. In that case, additional devices are needed to connect ESS with cooling system of the vessel. So the development of addition device is needed and being studied.

  • The important problem in the high speed spindles is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by the motor and ball bearings. Thermal characteristics according to the bearing preload and hollow shaft cooling are studied for the spindle with the oil mist lubrication and high frequency motor. Temperature distribution and thermal deformation according to the spindle speed, preload and flow rate are measured by thermocouple and gap sensor. Temperature distribution and thermal deformation are analyzed by using the finite element method. The results of analysis are compared with the measured data. This paper show that the suitable preload and hollow shaft cooling are very effective to minimize the thermal effect by the motor and ball bearings. This study indicates that temperature distribution and thermal deformation of the high speed spindle system can be estimated reasonably by using the three dimensional model through the finite element method and supports thermal optimization and more effective cooling method.

  • Water cooling ducts are installed in the exhaust diffuser for high altitude tests of rocket engine to protect diffuser from high-temperature combustion gas. The mass flow rate and pressure of cooling water is designed to prevent boiling of cooling water in the ducts. Therefore, the estimation of maximum temperature of duct wall is important parameter in design of cooling system, especially pressure of cooling water. The method for predicting maximum temperatures of duct walls with variation of coolant flow rates was derived theoretically.

  • The important problem in high speed spindle is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by motor and ball bearings. In this study. the effects of bearing preload and cooling for high speed spindle with high frequency motor are investigated. A high speed spindle is composed of angular contact ball bearings, high frequency motor, grease lubrication, oil jacket cooling, and so on. Heat generation of the bearing and the high frequency motor are estimated from the theoretical and experimental data. The thermal analyses of high speed spindle to minimize the thermal effect and maximize the cooling effect are carried out under the various cooling conditions and preload. Method of variable bearing preload and cooling can be useful to design the high speed motor spindle. The results show that the optimal preload and cooling are very effective to minimize the thermal displacement by motor and ball bearing.

  • In this paper, the basic design study of a water-cooling jacket, which have reported no cases for applying to railway traction motors so far, were conducted for applying to Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for railway vehicles. The basic thermal characteristics analysis of the 110kW-class IPMSM was performed by using 3-dimentional thermal equivalent network method. The necessary design requirements of the water-cooling jacket were derived by analyzing the results of the basic thermal properties. Next, the thermal characteristics analysis technique was established by using the equivalent model of the solenoid-typed pipe to be installed on the inside of the water-cooling jacket for 110kW-class IPMSM. Finally, a design model of 6kW-class water-cooling jacket was derived through the analysis of various design parameters.

  • The present study has been preformed to investigate the effect of obstacles around a cooling tower with air-guide to prevent recirculation. The external region as well as the cooling tower are included in the computational domain to analyze the flow phenomena around a cooling tower accurately. Three-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal and unstructured grid system. The standard turbulence model is used to consider the turbulence effect. In order to investigate the recirculation phenomena, flow and temperature fields are calculated with the distance between cooling tower and obstacle, the allocated geometrical type and the air-guide. The moisture fraction rates decrease with increment of the distance between cooling tower and obstacle. The effect of air-guide to reduce the mean recirculation rate is obviously observed.
