  • The objectives of this study are to find out and to analyze the heat transmission characteristics of the conventional and prefabricated Ondol systems. To compare the thermal characteristics of these Ondol, a real sized Ondol model is set in a chamber. Hot water whose temperature is varied from $45^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ with $5^{\circ}C$ interval is supplied to each Ondol system. At that time the temperature distribution of floor surface, the amount of supplied heat, the heat radiation aspect and the heat loss from the floor to the underground are measured and analyzed simultaneously. As a result, even if the supplied hot water temperature to the prefabricated Ondol panel is lower by about $5^{\circ}C$ than that of the conventional Ondol panel, the net radiant effect is same. Heat radiation efficiency of the prefabricated Ondol panel is over 5% better than that of the conventional Ondol panel. It takes 12 hours for the conventional Ondol and 45 minutes for the prefabricated Ondol, respectively to reach steady state.

  • Most Korean houses are heated by the Ondol heating system. There has been, however, no reasonable design procedure availabe yet for the system. The conventional design should be improved to have auniform floor surface. temperature distribution and to have a high thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiencies of the ondol were defined and the method of experimentation was studied. An experiment, using a life-size model which was well insulated, was performed to observe the variation in thermal efficiency as the length of fuel burning time was varied.

  • This paper is to present the performance data for pressure setting method using some tile bonds for application on the Ondol-Heating floor system. For this purpose, powder and liquid tile bonds(Organic.Inorganic mixed tile bonds) were compared with the conventional tile cement for pressure setting method in the sight of the adhesive stability of porcelain tile. It tested for tiles after 14, 28days under standard condition and severe conditions. The severe conditions were water immersion and heat ageing($70^{\circ}C$). Another experimental factors concerned tile bond properties such as mixing ratio(in case of using liquid admixture), open time, which are supposed to affect the tensile strength of tile, were studied and discussed through the experiments.

  • Draft of the conbustion gab burning in a briquette gives a great part of driving force to the flue gas in an Korean conventional ondol heating system. The Paper present s how the draft intensity varies for each whole Combustion duration. In this experiment the temperatures of thirty spots In three gas courses of a briquette were measured and the drafts were calculated form those experimental data. The result is that the shorter the combustion duration of a briquette is, the stronger the draft becomes, the intensity of drafts ranging between 0.15mm Aq to 0.26mm Aq.

  • This study aimed to grasp trends of the discourse for improving living conditions carried out since 1920's, when the sense for mending the irrationality of conventional living emerged in various magazines. Among the movement, women intellectuals played an important roles to discuss reforming daily life and unhealthy, inconvenient houseworks. This study found the ideological background and direction of this discourse, and estimated its important role for housing improvement, analyzing the contents of articles published in representative womens' magazines of the modern times. In the discourse, they thought that it was most important to make houseworks brief and efficient, and concentrated on building rational environment for houseworks. As reforming kitchen system, heating system (Ondol) should be separated from cooking system to improve hygienic and economical condition of houseworks. Reformed kitchen would be equipped with new installations for effectiveness, lightened by sunlight through windows, and finished floor with cement and drainage for sanitation. Also, they suggested new ways of living, planning modern houses with reformed kitchen system, thinking about moving path and distance of housewives. This discourse would be a foundation to the change of kitchen system up to now.
