  • The microwave of 2450 MHz, generated by a household cooking oven, was evaluated for its applicability to melt various rehydrated media and to remove dissolved oxygen from tubed media for anaerobic culture. The effect on the sterilization of E. coli in selective media was also evaluated. The following results were obtained. 10 The microwave oven was useful in saving time for melting media and in eliminating heat and combustion gas from the laboratory, which were inevitable by-products in the conventional flame method. 2) Dissolved oxygen could be removed without boiling over by exposing the tubes of anaerobic culture medium after putting them in a wire basket in a beaker with water. 30 The count of E. coli during the melting of MacConkey and EMB agar were similar to those treated with open flame. The microwave treatment was not considered a possible mean to replace autoclaving even in these selective media.

  • Microwave heating (MW) was studied for the sintering of amorphous powders. In comparison to conventional heating (CV), the results show that microwave heating has the potential to substantially accelerate the sintering process and allow for highly densified solidification by eliminating the pores and increasing the shrinkage rate. In the heat treatment to synthesize aluminum borate ($Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$) whiskers from precursors, it was found that microwave heating helps the formation of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ crystal as well as the decrease of crystallization temperature of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ to a level significantly lower than the previously reported value of $1050^{\circ}C$.

  • In home-style microwave oven, silica-Al powder mixture was ignited among pellets and combustion wave-front propagated to produce Si+AIN+Al2O3 as resultant phases under N2 atmosphere. Without cooling pro-cedure the resultant phases of Si+AIN+Al2O3 continously absorbed microwave and were heated to be syn-thesized into sialon phases. This synthesis rate of sialon phases from silica-Al powder mixture in home-style microwave oven was higher than that in conventional furnace, and total processing time was around 1 hour, which could save energy and cost.

  • A novel microwave-induced pyrolysis of polystyrene in motor oil was performed using a quartz tube reactor with silicon carbide as the microwave absorbent. Different pyrolysis conditions were investigated, such as time range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and power range from 180 to 250 watt. The distillate components were analyzed with GC-MS, and styrene, 1-methyl styrene, toluene, ethyl benzene were the four main products. Among these, styrene took over 70 percentages. Temperature of the complete pyrolysis using microwave was much lower than that of conventional thermal pyrolysis method.

  • Conventional hot-air oven-drying method takes at least four hours to determine the moisture content of wood sample and this method is not always acceptable to wood industry. In this study samples of six different specifications from Paulownia coreana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus acutissima were dried in domestic microwave oven to their oven dry weights to investigate the possibility of rapid moisture content determination technique using microwave-oven drying method. Continuous heating time, cooling time and intermittent heating time were determined by each species and sample specifications. Temperatures of surface and center of samples were also measured during drying. Oven-drying times were reduced to 1/7~1/10 of conventional hot-air oven-drying method. Therefore microwave heating and drying techniques appear attractive for wood industry as a rapid moisture content determination method.

  • One of zeolitic imidazolate framework materials (ZIF), ZIF-8, has been synthesized with microwave irradiation and conventional electric heating at $140{\sim}180^{\circ}C}$. ZIFs are porous crystalline materials and are similar to metal organic framework (MOF) materials because both ZIFs and MOFs are composed of both organic and metallic components. ZIFs are very stable and similar to zeolites because ZIFs have tetrahedral networks. ZIF-8, with a decreased crystal size, can be synthesized rapidly with microwave irradiation. The microwave synthesis of ZIF-8 is completed in 4 h at $140{^{\circ}C}$ and the reaction time is decreased by about 5 times compared with the conventional electric heating. The ZIF-8 obtained by microwave heating has larger surface area and micropore volume compared with the ZIF-8 synthesized with conventional electric heating. It can be confirmed that ZIF-8s show type-I adsorption isotherms, explaining the microporosity of the ZIF-8s. Based on FTIR and TGA results, it can be understood that the ZIF-8s have similar bonding and thermal characteristics irrespective of heating methods such as microwave and conventional heating.

  • Various reaction conditions uding temperature, time and type and concentration of templates have been changed in order to facilely synthesize, especially with microwave (MW) heating, SAPO-34 molecular sieves. SAPO-34 molecular sieve can be synthesized rapidly with microwave irradiation from a gel containing tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) as a template. However, other several templating molecules lead to SAPO-5 molecular sieve under microwave irradiation even though SAPO-34 is obtained by conventional electric synthesis from the same reactant gels. Moreover, SAPO-34 can be obtained more easily by increasing the TEAOH or silica concentration or by increasing the reaction temperature. SAPO-34 can be obtained within 5 min in a selected condition (high temperature of 210 $^{\circ}C$) with microwave heating, which may lead to a continuous production of the important material. SAPO-34 synthesized by microwave irradiation is homogeneous and small in size and shows acidity and a stable performance in the dehydration of methanol and 2-butanol to olefins, suggesting potential applications in acid catalysis.

  • The behavior of nucleation and crystallization in the $Li_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass heat-treated at different condition under the conventional and microwave processing was studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), and electrical conductivity measurement. Nucleation temperature and temperature of maximum nucleation rate in both conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples were 460~$500^{\circ}C$ and $580^{\circ}C$, respectively. It was expected that the probability for bulk crystallization increased in microwave heat-treated sample, compared to conventionally heat-treated one. Degree of crystallization increased with increasing crystallization temperature in both conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples. However, pattern of crystallization growth under microwave processing appeared to be quite different from that under the conventional one due to its internal or volumetric heating. Electrical conductivity of conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples were 1.337~2.299, 0.281~~$0.911{\times}10^{-7}\Omega {\textrm}{cm}^{-1}$, respectively.

  • This study investigated the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of lead-free 0.74(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.26SrTiO3 (BNST26) piezoelectric ceramics sintered using a microwave furnace. For comparison, specimens were also prepared using a conventional furnace sintering (CFS). Average grain sizes of 2.4 ㎛ and 3.2 ㎛ were obtained in the sample sintered at 1,100℃ for 5 min using microwave sintering (MWS) and at 1,175℃ for 2 h using CFS, respectively. To quantify the changes in the microstructures and electrical properties according to the sintering conditions, the polarization hysteresis, bipolar and unipolar strain curves, and temperature dependence of permittivity were evaluated. As a result, it was determined that the Pmax (maximum polarization), Pr (remanent polarization) and Smax (maximum strain) values tend to increase with the average grain size. Based on these results, it is concluded that the MWS method can produce lead-free ceramics with superior performance in a relatively short time compared to the conventional CFS method.
