  • Microwave absorbers for X-Band RADAR have been designed and fabricated trialy both in sheet and paint types, as a result of which the relative bandwidth of nearly 8% in both cases has been obtained under the tolerance limits of the reflection coefficients lower than -20dB. The matching thickness becomes 1.36 to 1.56mm which is significantly thinner than that of the conventional ones. Furthermore, it was shown that the microwave absorbing characteristics vary in accordance with the density and the mixing ratios of the materials constituting absorbs.

  • In this study, the extractable content of each parameters from angelica was confirmed using conventional solvent extraction and microwave extraction in order to extract the functional active ingredient. In addition, the functionality of active ingredients was evaluated by measuring the antioxidant activity and the flavonoids and total polyphenols of the active ingredient extracted from angelica, For the conventional solvent extraction at optimal conditions of the extraction time (2 h), ethanol/pure water volume ratio (60%), the extraction temperature ($60^{\circ}C$), 20.6 wt% of the active ingredient were extracted. Also, when using microwave extraction at optimal conditions of the microwave irradiation time (6 min), microwave intensity (600 W) and ethanol/pure water volume ratio (60 vol%) 22.8 wt% of the active ingredient were extracted. The microwave method required shorter time to complete extraction compared to that of using the conventional solvent extraction method. The antioxidant activity of active ingredients extracted from angelica was 31.46% of DPPH radical scavening activity. The flavonoid content was 14.20 mg QE/mg dw, and total polyphenol content was 11.70 mg GAE/g when using the microwave extraction process.

  • Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum Linn) is one of the most widely grown plants in Indonesia. In addition, nyamplung oil has a future competitive advantage in that it can be processed into biodiesel. However, conventional methods for transesterification of nyamplung oil have been less effective. Therefore, in this study biodiesel was produced using microwaves as one of the alternative methods that can improve the shortcomings of conventional methods. In addition, optimization of parameters such as microwave power, catalyst concentration and transesterification time was done using Box-Behnken design. The combination of microwave with CaO catalyst and treated with Box-Behnken design are considered as a new and modern method for production of biodiesel from nyamplung oil and optimizing the factors that affected the transesterification process. The results showed that factors such as microwave power of 449.29 W, concentration of catalyst of 4.86% and transesterification time of 10.07 min can produce optimal yield of biodiesel of 92.73% with reliability of 93.22%.

  • Beef loaves(5${\times}5{\times}$5cm) were cooked by conventional moist-heat and by various levels of microwaves. The mean internal temperature of the meats cooked by low power microwaves for 5~15 min were not significantly different from the conventionally boiled meats for 30 min. When cooking was made by microwaves at low level for 5~10 min, or at high level for 2 min and additional heating at low power level for 5min, the percent cooking loss were comparable with the samples cooked conventionally for 20~40 min. General proteolytic activity determined with azocoll indicated that enzyme activity decreased as internal temperature increased(r=-0.5779, p<0.05), and maximum activity occured at meats conventionally moist-heated for 10 min and by low power microwave for 5 min. Sensory scores for tenderness were high at conventional moist-heat for 30 min, for 20 min, microwave cooked at thatwing power for 10 min and at low power level for 10 min, in descending order. There were no significant differences in the thiamin content of meats after various treatments.

  • Crystallization of SAPO-5 and SAPO-34 molecular sieves with microwave and conventional electric heating of the same gel has been investigated in an alkaline condition using N,N,N’N’tetraethylethylenediamine as a template molecule. SAPO-5 structure can be selectively prepared with microwave heating because of the fast crystallization of the technique. On the other hand, SAPO-34 is the sole product with usual conventional electric heating because SAPO-5 can be gradually transformed into SAPO-34 structure with an increase in crystallization time. This phase selectivity is probably because of the relative stability of the two phases at the reaction conditions (kinetic effect). Crystallization with microwave heating can be suggested as a phase selective synthesis method for relatively unstable materials because of fast crystallization.

  • Subphthalocyanine (SubPc) derivatives with different kind of substitute groups were synthesized successfully from various precursors using conventional and microwave heating sources. The chemical structure of precursor and product was determined by $^{1}H-NMR$ and FT-IR spectrometer. Also, spectroscopic property was measured by UV-Vis spectrometer. Compared to the conventional synthesis, it was found that SubPc derivatives were synthesized for a shorter reaction time with a higher synthetic yield in the microwave synthesis.

  • A conventional power supply to drive a microwave oven has ferro-resonant transformer and high voltage Capacitor(HVC). Though it is simple, transformer is bulky, heavy and has low-efficiency. To improve this defect a high frequency inverter type power supply has been investigated and developed in recent years. But, because of additional control circuit and switching device, inverter-type power supply is more expensive than conventional one. In this study, A new pulse power supply for Microwave Oven using novel HVC embedded high frequency transformer is proposed for down-sizing, cost reduction, and efficiency emprovement of Inverter type power supply. Also, equivalent circuit model is derived by impedance measurements. And the operation of proposed pulse power supply is verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • We studied the effect of sol-gel processing and sintering temperature on the microwave properties of $MgCo_2(VO_4)_2$ system(MCV) which is applicable to LTCC(low-temperature cofired ceramics). The MCV was synthesized by sol-gel process using solution that contains precursor molecules for Mg, Co, and V. SEM analysis shows that the average particle size is ${\sim}1{\mu}m$ and size distribution is very uniform compared to the one prepared by conventional solid-state reaction process. Highly dense samples were obtained at the sintering temperature range of $750^{\circ}C{\sim}930^{\circ}C$. The maximum $Q{\times}f_0$ value of 55,700GHz, dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$) of 10.41 and temperature coefficient(${\tau}_f$) of $-85ppm/^{\circ}C$ was obtained at the sintering temperature of $930^{\circ}C$. The superior microwave properties of sol-gel processed MCV relative to conventional solid-state reaction processed one is remarkable especially at lower sintering temperatures such as $750^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$.

  • A comparative study of microwave and conventional sintering of lead-free $Bi_{1/2}(Na_{0.82}K_{0.18})_{1/2}TiO_3-BaZrO_3-CuO$ ceramics is presented. It was found that microwave sintering (MWS) can be successfully applied to the fabrication of large strain Bi-perovskite with electric field-induced strains comparable to those obtained with conventional sintering (CFS). Although MWS resulted in smaller grained microstructures than CFS, the ferroelectric properties were stronger in MWS-derived specimens than in the CFS-derived ones. The piezoelectric strain constant $d_{33}{^*}$ of the CFS-derived specimens reached a maximum value of 372 pm/V after sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$, whereas that of MWS-derived specimens peaked at $950^{\circ}C$ with a $d_{33}{^*}$ value of 324 pm/V.
