  • A multi-faceted experimental investigation has been carried out to study the cooling performance for stacked modules in arrays of heat generating rectangular modules deployed along PCB's in the enclosed cabinet. The main parameters which have an important effect on cooling characteristics are flow velocity, channel spacing, installation of fan unit, attachment of heat sink, and acoustic noise. The results of individual effect are very helpful for the electronic packaging designer. In order to improve the cooling performance, it is certain that the enlargement of channel space is obviously effective, while this id disadvantageous in high density electronic packaging. Each of the paameters is quantitatively examined as cooling performance and the correlation of Reynolds number to Nusselt number is compared with previous study.

  • Natural convection of a two dimensional laminar steady-state incompressible fluid flow in a rectangular enclosure has been investigated numerically for low aspect ratios with the physical vapor transport crystal growth. Results show that for aspect ratio (Ar = L/H) range of $0.1{\leq}Ar{\leq}1.5$, with the increase in Grashof number by one order of magnitude, the total mass flux is much augmented, and is exponentially decayed with the aspect ratio. Velocity and temperature profiles are presented at the mid-width of the rectangular enclosure. It is found that the effect of Grashof number on mass transfer is less significant when the enclosure is shallow (Ar = 0.1) and the influence of aspect ratio is stranger when the enclosure is tall and the Grashof number is high. Therefore, the convective phenomena are greatly affected by the variation of aspect ratios.

  • We examine the problem in which porous/viscoelastic compliant thin plates are subject to pressure fluctuations under transitional or turbulent boundary layer. Measurements are presented of the frequency spectra of the near-field pressure and radiated sound by compliant surface. A porous plate consisting of 5mm thick, open-cell foam with fabric covering and a viscoelastic painted plate of 1mm thick over an acoustic board of 4m thick were placed over a rigid surface in an anechoic wind tunnel. Streamwise velocity and wall pressure measurements were shown to highly attenuate the convective wall pressure energy when the convective wavenumber ($k_{ch}$) was 3.0 or more. The sound source localization on the compliant walls is applied to the measurement of radiated sound by using an acoustic mirror system.

  • The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by a node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method with Jacobi matrix solver is used for the time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetragedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. Inviscid bump flow is solved to check the accuracy of high order convective flux discretisation. And viscous flows around a circular cylinder and a sphere are studied to show the efficiency and accuracy of the solver.

  • The variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were investigated using a holographic interferometry and 2-D PIV system with varying Rayleigh number. To measure quasisteady changes of temperature field, two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry; double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated effectively using digital image processing technique and the reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be reconstructed clearly. On the other hand, transient convective flow can be reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noises, compared with the double-exposure method. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow structure at high Rayleigh numbers. The periodic flow pattern at high Rayleigh numbers obtained by the real-time holographic interferometer method is in a good agreement with the PIV results.

  • Finite element method has been applied to solve the fundamental governing equations of natural convective, electrically conducting, incompressible fluid flow past an infinite vertical plate surrounded by porous medium in presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation, Soret and Dufour effects. In this research work, the results of coupled partial differential equations are found numerically by applying finite element technique. The sway of significant parameters such as Soret number, Dufour number, Grashof number for heat and mass transfer, Magnetic field parameter, Thermal radiation parameter, Permeability parameter on velocity, temperature and concentration evaluations in the boundary layer region are examined in detail and the results are shown in graphically. Furthermore, the effect of these parameters on local skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and Sherwood numbers is also investigated. A very good agreement is noticed between the present results and previous published works in some limiting cases.

  • The experimental investigation of thermal response characteristics by the air flow through the porous media has been carried out. The packed spheres of steel or glass were considered as the porous media in the present study. Temperature distributions of the fluid in the porous media as well as pressure drops through the porous media were measured. The transient temperature variations in the porous media are compared favorably with the analytical results in the high Reynolds number ranges. However, in the low Reynolds number ranges, the experimental data deviate from the analytical results, due to the dominant heat conduction penetration to the upstream direction, which is not considered in the analytical model. The cool-down response of porous media is found to be dependent upon the specific dimensionless time considering the material property and air velocity. The heat discharge process is recommended to be operated until a certain time, considering the cost efficiency.

  • A Numerical study on two-dimensional laminar natural convection with and without surface radiation in fully or partially open square cavity was performed. The cavity has one vertical heated wall facing a vertical opening and two horizontal insulated walls. The pressure boundary condition was applied to the opening instead of the velocity boundary condition. The results of this study showed that the increase of partition length decreased the convective and the radiative Nusselt numbers. It was also found that the increase of wall emissivity decreased the convective Nusselt numbers but increased the radiative Nusselt numbers.

  • In the present study, heat transfer characteristics of oil flow over offset strip fins are predicted by the numerical methods. Oil flow in the plate-fin passage is idealized by 2 dimensions. Inlet velocity, Prandtl number and fin pitch ratio are chosen as parameters which affect the heat transfer of offset strip fins. The effect of parameters on pressure drops and convective heat transfer coefficients are described. Characteristic length is derived in case of 2 dimensional flow situation. Correlations for friction factor and convective heat transfer coefficient are derived.
