The weld pool convection problem that occurs during the stationary GTA welding has been studied, considering the four driving forces for weld pool convection, i.e., the electromagnetic force, the buoyancy force, the aerodynamic drag force, and the surface tension force at the weld pool surface. In the numerical simulation, the difficulties associated with the irregular moving liquid-solid interface have been successfully overcome by adopting a Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. In the experiments to show the validity of the numerical analysis, a deep periphery and shallow centerpentrated weld pool shape was observed from the etched specimen. It could be revealed that this type of weld pool shape could be simulated, only when some of aerodynamic drag force distributions are considered. Although slight disagreement arose, the calculated and the observed weld pool shapes were in a reasonable agreement.
Study on combined natural convection-radiation In partially open square enclosures filled with absorbing-anisotropic scattering media is performed. A heater block located in the enclosure causes the natural circulation of the fluid in the enclosure which results In significant in-flow of the cold fluid through the partially open wall. Four different locations of the heater are considered to observe the effect of the heater locations on the resulting heat transfer. Results obtained from the combined convection-radiation analyses show much stronger circulation of t he fluid inside the enclosure as compared to those obtained from the pure convection analyses. As the ratio of the open area is Increased, the inflow of the cold fluid and the circulation of the fluid inside the enclosure is increased causing lower fluid temperature Inside the enclosure. It is shown that the location of the heater influences the circulation and heat transfer significantly by showing stronger circulations and more uniform temperature distributions for the cases where the heater is located on the bottom wall as compared to those for the cases where the heater is located on the upper part wall of the enclosure. For pure absorbing medium, the expected circulation in the fluid is relatively week as compared to those with absorbing-scattering medium due to the smaller wall heating as the radiant heat is used to heat the fluid instead. The forward anisotropic scattering phase function is shown to increase the fluid circulation further as compared to the isotropic scattering medium.
An experimental and numerical study on the three-dimensional natural convection-radiation conjugate heat transfer in the enclosure with heat generating chip has been performed. A 3-dimensional simulation model is developed by considering heat transfer phenomena by conduction-convection and radiation. Radiative transfer was analyzed with the discrete ordinates method. Experiments are conducted in order to validate the numerical model. Comparisons with the experimental data show that good agreement is obtained when the radiation effect is considered. The effects of the thermal conductivity of the substrate and power level on heat transfer are investigated. It is shown that radiation is the dominant heat transfer mode and the conductivity of the substrate has important effects on the heat transfer in the enclosure.
Natural convection flows in a cubical air-filled cavity that has one pair of opposing faces isothermal at different temperatures, $T_h\;and\;T_c$ respectively, the remaining four faces having a linear variation from $T_c\;to\;T_h$ are numerically simulated by a solution code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. An extension to a previously published work, special attention of this work is paid to three-dimensional flow and thermal characteristics in nature convection according to new orientation at Ra= $1{\times}105$. Comparisons of the average Nusselt number at the cold face are made with benchmark solutions and experimental results found in the literature. It is demonstrated that the average Nusselt number on the cold face has a maximum value around the diamond-type inclination angle of $43.2^{\circ}\;at\;Ra=1{\times}105$. We also report the effect of new orientation on the type of flow and temperature structure in a cubical-cavity.
An investigation of the effects of transverse magnetic field on melt convection and macrosegregation in vertical Bridgman growth of Te doped InSb was carried out by means of microstructure observation, the measurement of Te distribution by Hall measurement, electrical resistivity measurement and X-ray analysis. Prior to the experiments, interface stability, convective instability and suppression of convection by magnetic field were examined. A thermosolutal convection in the Te doped InSb melt occurred in the examined growth condition without magnetic field. The effective distribution coefficient, $K_{eff}$, was about 0.35 without magnetic field, 0.45 with magnetic field of 2kG, and 0.7 at 4kG. It was found that the stronger the applied magnetic field was, the more the convection was suppressed.
Numerical calculations are carried out for the natural convection in a square enclosure with two hot cylinders induced by temperature difference between a cold outer rectangular cylinder and two hot circular cylinders. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained, using the immersed boundary method (IBM) to model two inner circular cylinders based on finite volume method, for different Rayleigh numbers varying over the range of $10^3$ to $10^5$. The study goes further to investigate the effect of the location of two cylinders on the heat transfer and fluid flow. The location of inner circular cylinders is changed vertically along the center-line of square enclosure. The changes of heat transfer quantities have been presented.
This study presents an experiment investigation on natural convection heat transfer of air-cooling Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in a enclosure system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Considered are replacing fuel cell stack with Aluminum block for heat generating inside a enclosure chamber. The volume ratio of fuel cell stack and chamber for simulation to the actual size of aerial vehicle is 1 to 15. The parameters considered for experimental study are the environmental temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $-60^{\circ}C$ and the block heat input of 10 W, 20 W and 30 W. Effect of the thermal conductivity of the block and power level on heat transfer in the chamber are investigated. Experimental results illustrate the temperature rise at various locations inside the chamber as dependent upon heat input of fuel cell stack and environmental temperature. From the results, dimensionless correlation in natural convection was proposed with Nusselt number and Rayleigh number for designing air-cooling PEMFC powered high altitude long endurance (HALE) UAV.
Effect of natural convention for hot plate surface temperature uniformity was studied by experiments that were adjusted height of chamber and temperature difference. The hot plate chamber is composed of the hot plate and the upper heater and adiabatic vertical wall. The hot plate diameter is 220mm and maintains temperature at $150^{\circ}C$. Flow pattern compares with surface temperature and confirms that natural convection affects on temperature uniformity of hot plate surface. In case, temperature non-uniformity of hot plate surface is due to heater pattern, lots of weak and small flow cells more improve temperature uniformity than stronger flow cells or non-developing flow cell. Improve temperature uniformity $1.2^{\circ}C$ when developing weak and small flow cells.
In the present study, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number was developed for forced convection and nucleate boiling region in spray cooling. Also the effect of droplet subcooling on spray cooling heat transfer was investigated. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for spray cooling experiment, and water and FC-77 were used for developing the correlation. From the experimental results, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30%$ error for water and FC-77.
