  • Recently, ultra-lightweight materials with open, periodic cell structures take much attention owing to its potential for multi-functionality such as load bearing, thermal dissipation, and actuation. This paper presents experimental results on the hydraulic and heat transfer characteristics for the Wire-woven Bulk Kagome(WBK) composed of aluminum 1100 wires. The overall pressure drop and heat transfer of the WBK specimen have been experimentally investigated under forced air convection condition. The pressure loss and heat transfer performance of the aluminum WBK are compared with other heat dissipation media. It was shown that heat transfer depended on relative density and surface area density. Comparison with metal foams and other heat dissipation media such as packed beds, lattice frame materials, louvered fins, and other materials suggests that the aluminum WBK competes favorably with the best available heat dissipation media in heat transfer performance.

  • A computational investigation is conducted on free convection from a thin plate having a surface heat source. The thermal configuration simulates the recently-proposed transparent film heater made of a single-walled carbon nanotube film on a glass substrate. The Navier-Stokes computations are carried out to study laminar free convection from the heater. Parallel numerical experiments are performed by using a simplified design analysis model which solve the conduction equation with the boundary conditions utilizing several existing correlations for convective heat transfer coefficient. Comparison leads to the most suitable boundary condition for the thermal model to evaluate the performance evaluation of a transparent thin-film heater.

  • The three-dimensional laminar mixed convection flow between the conductive printed circuit boards. on which the heat generating rectangular blocks are uniformly distributed, has been examined in the present study. The flow and heat-transfer characteristics are assumed to be pseudo periodic in the streamwise direction and symmetric in the cross-stream direction. Using an algorithm of SIMPLER, the continuity equation. the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation are solved numerically in the three-dimensional domain Inside the channel. The convective derivative terms are discretized by the QUICK scheme to accurately capture the flow field. The flow and the heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined for various Re and Gr.

  • An experimental study has been conducted on the free convection heat transfer for the 7 kinds of circular finned tube heat exchangers. Empirical correlation was suggested at the range of 3,500$D_o$/$D_i$<3.0, 0.19<$P_f$/$D_i$<0.34. The 92% of experimental data agreed with the correlation within 10%.

  • In this study, to research characteristics of heat flow of magnetic fluid, it's studied about numerical and experimental method of natural convections change and characteristics of heat transfer in Concentric double pipe annuli as analysis model. In the result, natural convection of magnetic fluid is controlled by direction and strength of the impressed magnetic field. Especially, according to average Nusselt number, heat transfer is the smallest on the balancing point between body force and buoyancy.

  • The Effects of radiative heat transfer on turbulent flow in a partitioned enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is partially divided by a thin, poorly conducting vertical divider projecting from the ceiling of the enclosure. The low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent flow field. The solutions to the radiative transfer equations are obtained by the discrete ordinates method(DOM). This method is based on control volume method and is compatible with the SIMPLER algorithm used to solve the momentum and energy equations. The effects of optical thickness and Planck number on the flow, temperature fields and heat transfer rates are investigated for a moderate Rayleigh number($=10^9$). The changes in buoyant flow fields and temperature distributions due to the variation of baffle length are also analyzed. From the predictions, radiant heat exchange between the baffle and the sidewalls strongly influences the temperature distribution in the baffle and its vicinity and total heat transfer increases as the optical thickness and the baffle length decrease. It is possible to neglect the radiative heat transfer effect when Planck number is over one.

  • This paper has been made to investigate the thermal performance characteristics for the several types of layered aluminum heat sinks with offset-strip fin. Heat sinks with different fin height, fin length, number of fin layer and slanted fin are prepared and tested for natural convection as well as forced convection. The experimental results for layered heat sink(LHS) are compared to those for advanced pin fin heat sink (PHS) so that the appropriate heat sink can be designed or chosen according to the heating conditions. The overall heat transfer performances for LHS are almost comparable to those of PHS under natural convection, and become 1.2∼1.5 times as high as those of PHS under forced convection situation. This study shows that fin height and number of fin layer re important parameters, which have a serious influence on thermal performance for layered heat sinks.

  • Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.

  • The test methods using convection (flame) and radiation heat sources were compared to evaluate the thermal protective performance of the firefighter's protective clothing. In particular, the influence of the outer shell, mid-layer, and lining constituting the firefighter's protective clothing on the thermal protective performance was compared for convection and radiation heat sources. Tests for the thermal protective performance were carried out according to KS K ISO 9151 (convection), KS K ISO 6942 (radiation), and KS K ISO 17492 (convection and radiation). When tested under the same incident heat flux conditions ($80kW/m^2$), the heat transfer index ($t_{12}$ and $t_{24}$) for the radiation heat source was higher than that for the convection heat source. This means that radiation has a lesser effect than convection. For the convection heat source, the lining had the greatest effect on the thermal protective performance, followed by the mid-layer and the outer shell. On the other hand, for the radiation heat source, the effect on the thermal protective performance was great in the order of lining, outer shell, and mid-layer. Convection and radiation have fundamentally different mechanisms of heat transfer, and different heat sources can lead to different thermal protective performance results depending on the material composition. Therefore, to evaluate the thermal protective performance of the firefighter's protective clothing, it is important to test not only the convection heat source, but also the radiation heat source.
