  • We have conducted a preliminary numerical analysis to understand the effects of double-diffusive convection on the molar flux at the crystal region during the growth of mercurous bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals in 1 g and microgravity (${\mu}g$) conditions. It was found that the total molar fluxes decay first-order exponentially with the aspect ratio (AR, transport length-to-width), $1{\leq}AR{\leq}10$. With increasing the aspect ratio of the horizontal enclosure from AR = 1 up to Ar = 10, the convection flow field shifts to the advective-diffusion mode and the flow structures become stable. Therefore, altering the aspect ratio of the enclosure allows one to control the effect of the double diffusive natural convection. Moreover, microgravity environments less than $10^{-2}g$ make the effect of double-diffusive natural convection much reduced so that the convection mode could be switched over the advective-diffusion mode.

  • The PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) with liquid crystal tracers is used for visualizing and analysis of the mixed convection in the parallel plates with the upper part cooled and the lower part heated. It is found that the flow pattern of mixed convection in the parallel plates can be classified into three patterns which was affected by Reynolds number. Also, the periodic nature is confirmed, and visualized in experiment.

  • Natural convection in bridgman growth and it's effect on macrosegregation in unidirectionally solidified off-eutectic alloys were examined in this study. AlCu off-eutectic alloys(27.5wt% ~35. 6wt% ) were solidified upward or downward for producing a different natural convection and then Cu concentrations of off-eutectic composites were measured as a function of solidified fraction. Solutal and temperature distributions ahead of the solid/liquid interface were measured on quenched specimen. When hypo-utectic AlCu alloys are directionally solidified with downward growth, considerable macrosegregation occurs due to flow induced by thermal and solutal convection in melt. Soultal convection affects the macrosegregation of hyper-eutectic AlCu alloys more severely than thermal convection. Solute composition at solid/liquid interface of offkutectic composites was eutectic and also temperature was near eutectic point without large undercooling.

  • The Peltier Module has been used to dissipate the heat from electronic devices and electronic components. In this module, a heat sink is used to release the operating heat into the air outside. This study addressed the heat transfer characteristics for a heat sink with an inner tunnel. Under forced and natural convection conditions, the heat transfer characteristics were different. Therefore, the cooling and heating performances were studied for the heat sink, which has an inner tunnel. The heat transfer conditions were also evaluated by performing an experimental test, which investigated the heat transfer characteristics related to the variance in time and temperature distribution. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of the heat sink were conducted based on the forced and natural convection and temperature distribution changes. In the cooling experiment, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks decreased the temperature of the forced convection than the temperature of natural convection. In the forced and natural convection, the A- and B-shaped decreased to a minimum of $-15^{\circ}C$. Under the forced and natural convection conditions, A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks decreased the temperature when the voltage was increased. In the heating experiment, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks increased the temperature of the forced convection than the temperature of natural convection. In forced convection, when the voltage was $15^{\circ}C$, the temperature of the A-shaped cooling pin heat sink increased to $150^{\circ}C$, and the temperature of the B-shaped cooling pin heat sink increased to $145^{\circ}C$. Under forced and natural convection conditions, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks showed an increase in temperature with increasing voltage.

  • This present study has dealt with the natural convection of water in a rectangular vessel which has cooling point at the center of itself with numerically. The finite difference method (FDM) is presented for the two-dimensional computer simulation of water controlled by natural convection and heat conduction. According to this study, It is cleared that the overturn of density is clearly existed at the temperature of $4[^{\circ}C]$ and that was compared with experimental result. Also the change of natural convection is known from the streamlines and isotherms. Most of all. It is cleared that the overturn of natural convection is changed with time caused by the fact that the temperature and density relationship of water.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose basic data on convection heat-transfer coefficients in Ondol-heated room. Surface temperatures and several temperatures around each inside surface of wall, floor and ceiling composed of heating room are measured vertically in Ondol-heated model rooms, and the vertical temperature profiles could be expressed by nonlinear equation models. Also, the convection heat transfer phenomena are analysed from the nonlinear equation models. In the results, the convection heat-transfer coefficients of Ondol heated space are suggested by the term of temperature difference between each wall surface and room air temperature and by the relationship between Nusselt number and Rayleigh number of dimensionless numbers.

  • Thermocapillary convection in an open cylindrical annulus heated from the inside wall is investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The deformable free surface is obtained as a solution of the coupled transport equations at fixed Prandtl and aspect ratio. Only steady convection can be realized in this axisymmetric computations with either non-deformable or deformable surfaces. Dynamic free-surface deformations do not induce transitions to oscillatory convection even at large Reynolds numbers. Free surfaces are convex near the cold wall due to the stagnation point, and concave near the hot wall. Free surface deformation increases with increasing Ca at a fixed Re. Two peaks appear at the free surface with low Re, while additional ripples, four peaks, occur at larger Re. Thermocapillary convection in the open annulus interior is insensitive to variations in Ca.

  • Unidirectional solidification of $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composites was studied under the condition of forced convection by vibration. It has been shown that thermal gradient for solid is different from that for liquid during solidification under force convection by vibration. With increase of vibration, mobility of liquid increases, but decreases with decreasing vibration. The rate of solidification is very high initially, and decreases suddenly. For further solidification, the rate of solidification decrceases slowly, and shows a L-type behavior. The mechanical vibration during solidification effects efficiently on nucleation, and induces a forced convection in liquid. By the forced convection, great thermal gradient of liquid interface between solid and liquid can be obtained. The amount of solute near the interface also decreases as solute distribution is improved by the forced convection.

  • We constructed a cooling system for solar cells using convection phenomena and investigated its cooling performance. The cooling system didn't need any driving power or water resources. The convection cooler manufactured with a right-triangle shape of an air duct was attached to the rear of the solar cell to confirm that cooling was performed using convection phenomena. When the ratio of duct width to attachment surface width was 3:7, and the ratio of entrance height and exit height of duct was 5:1, it showed the best cooling performance. Comparative experiments with solar cells without convection cooler showed that cooling effects from 16.5℃ to 20.9℃ occurred after 40 minutes exposed to the 1300W Xenon lamp condition.

  • A numerical investigation is made of unsteady double-diffusive convection of a Boussinesq fluid in a rectangular cavity subject to time-periodic thermal excitations. The fluid is initially stratified between the top endwall of low solute concentration and the bottom endwall of high solute concentration. A time-dependent heat flux varying in a square wave fashion, is applied on one sidewall to induce buoyant convection. The influences of the imposed periodicity on double-diffusive convection are examined. A special concern is on the occurrence of resonance that the fluctuations of flow and attendant heat and mass transfers are mostly amplified at certain eigenmodes of the fluid system. Numerical solutions illustrate that resonant convection results in a conspicuous enhancement of time-mean mass transfer rate.
