  • This paper describes the results of reliability prediction analysis of control rod control system, which is being developed as part of KNICS project. The results of reliability prediction indicate MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) of cards for control rod control system. A purpose of reliability prediction is to evaluate MTBF of cards, identify the design drawbacks of cards, and propose design improvement to a designer to help design the more reliable control rod control system. This reliability prediction analysis used the the part count and part stress method in the basis of MIL-HDBK-217F.

  • In this paper we have fabricated the two-dimensional Rod Balancing System which expands conventional one-dimensional inverted pendulum control system and designed its controller. The X-axis cart and Y-axis bar of the Rod Balancing System, which is composed of X-Y table, are actuated through timing belt by each of two geared DC motors, and the rod mounted on a X-axis cart can be brought to the desired position and maintained in a vertical position by motor-control. For the control of the Rod Balancing System, we used a fuzzy logic controller that is an approach to systems control when the exact mathematical model of the plant is unknown or the mathematical model is too complex to understand.

  • This paper is about the method by which Power Control Unit(PCU) of Control Rod Control System(CRCS) logs events in the system and the real-time monitoring display. This method enables the functions like the event logging of Control Rod Drive Mechanism(CRDM)/power Cabinet, the off-line show of the event data logged and the on-line show by communication between the PCU and the monitoring display. Operators in a nuclear power plant must be able to grasp any possible abnormal states correctly. Because our newly designed system has a good ability to log and display the kinds, tine, and the prior and posterior states of urgent or non-urgent events, the operators can judge, maintain and repair the abnormal event more easily.

A Power Control System for the Rod Drive Coil of Control Element Drive Mechanism in Pressurized Water Reactor

  • In this paper, we propose a new type of power control system for the rod drive coil of the CEDM of the PWR NPP in order to supply more reliable DC power The electrical modelling of the controlled rod drive coil was done by referring related documentations. The design of the proposed system is based on this electric81 model satisfying the existing specification. A high power DC-DC converter scheme is adopted utilizing the SMPS technique in the design of the proposed system. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed system, an experimental system with the capability of 3.2 K Watt was set up for a rod with four cores and some computer simulations and experimentations were carried out. The result shows a very similar tracking performance with that of the existing system to the driving command. As a result of this, the proposed method can be applied to the power control system for the rod drive coil of the CEDM of the PWR NPP.

스마트 제어봉집합체의 낙하시간 평가 (Drop Time Evaluation for SMART Control Rod Assembly)

  • The control rod assemblies do freely fall into the reactor core by the gravity from the control rod drive mechanism. In order to achieve a rapid shutdown and control the reactor power, it is required to insert control rod assemblies as soon as possible. In this paper, we evaluated the drop time and flow characteristics caused around guide tube for SMART(System-integrated modular advanced reactor) control rod assembly. Numerical analyses are carried out with FLUENT program of computational fluid dynamics. This study results show that the drop time of the control rod assembly in the operating condition of SMART is more 20 percent rapidly than the drop time of the room temperature and ambient atmosphere condition.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new method of detecting faults for a power converter unit in Control Rod Control System. The faults of a power converter unit can exert harmful influence upon the operation of Control Rod Drive Mechanisms and the control of the reactor output. This situation makes the quick and correct detection of failures in a power converter unit very important. We devise a new method of fault detection for the digital power controller and improve the drawbacks of the existing fault detector.

  • In this paper we describe a Control Rod Control System(CRCS) with the various functions for the test and operation of Control Rod Drive Mechanism(CRDM). The CRCS controls the motion of the full length rod drive mechanisms in response to signals from the Reactor Operator and the Reactor Regulating System. The mechanisms are grouped and identified as being for either Shutdown Banks or Control Banks. The CRCS also provides information regarding rod motion, rod position, and status of the Rod Control System. Also we have implemented the diverse functions in the developed CRCS. Due to the developed CRCS, we are assured that the commercial operation by this system be made before long.

  • This paper deals with the design, implementation, and test of a CRCS for nuclear power plants. Although CRCS is still classified into non-safety class, much attention on its reliability issue has been given so far because of its importance for the stable operation of the reactor in the plant. In terms of technical aspects, our system adopts a full-duplex configuration to enhance reliability in contrast to the existing systems that are all simplex.

  • The small modular liquid-metal fast reactor (SMFR) is an important component of advanced nuclear systems. SMFRs exhibit relatively low breeding capability and constraint space for control rod installation. Consequently, control rods are deeply inserted at beginning and are withdrawn gradually to compensate for large burnup reactivity loss in a long lifetime. This paper is committed to investigating the impact of control rod compensation operation on core neutronics characteristics. This paper presents a whole core fine depletion model of long lifetime SMFR using OpenMC and the influence of depletion chains is verified. Three control rod position schemes to simulate the compensation process are compared. The results show that the fine simulation of the control rod compensation process impacts significantly the fuel burnup distribution and absorber consumption. A control rod equivalent position scheme proposed in this work is an optimal option in the trade-off between computation time and accuracy. The control position is crucial for accurate power distribution and void feedback coefficients in SMFRs. The results in this paper also show that the pin level power distribution is important due to the heterogeneous distribution in SMFRs. The fuel burnup distribution at the end of core life impacts the worth of control rods.

  • The reliability and accuracy of the information on control rod position are very important to the reactor safety and the design of the core protection system. In this study, a thorough investigation on the RSPT(Reed Switch Position Transmitter) type control rod position indication system and its actual implementation in the exiting nuclear power plants in Korea was performed first. A design of the control rod position indication system using reed switch for the CEDM on the system-integrated reactor SMART was developed based on the position indicator technology identified through the investigation. The feasibility of the design was evaluated by test of manufactured control rod position indicator using reed switch for SMART.
