Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify contraception behaviors in unmarried men and women. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study design was used. Individual in-depth interviews with fifteen participants were conducted. Content analysis was utilized to determine the main outcomes. Results: For men, three themes were consistently seen as contraception behaviors: 'men desired sexual intercourse greatly', 'men would not use a contraceptive device, even though they knew it was necessary', and 'men gradually considered contraceptive use to live their lives without interruption'. For women, the three themes were as follow: 'women had sex half willingly while half did not have sexual inter course for the first time', 'women did not use contraceptive devices because of ignorance of contraceptive methods', and 'women did not carefully consider contraceptive use'. Conclusion: To prevent unmarried men and women from having unplanned pregnancies, tailored sex education programs should be established throughout Korea. All things considered, the effect of multimedia sex education should be considered to maximize the use of contraceptive devices.
Oral contraceptive use is the most common type of contraception. More than 300 million women worldwide take oral contraceptives every day. However, there is a concern about the relationship with the incidence of cancer. This analytical retrospective study aimed to investigate the relationship between the incidence of cervical and breast cancers and oral contraceptive use in 128 Iranian patients with cervical cancer, 235 with breast cancer and equal numbers of controls. Data were collected through interviews with an organized set of questions. Details were also extracted from patient files. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The result revealed correlations between both cervical and breast cancers and history of contraceptive pills use. While cervical cancer significantly correlated with duration of use of pills, breast cancer had significant correlations with the type of oral contraceptive and age at first use. No significant relationships were found between the two types of cancer and age at discontinuation of oral contraceptives, patterns of use, and intervals from the last use. The use of oral contraceptives may triple the incidence of cervical cancer and doubles the incidence of breast cancer. Therefore, performing Pap smears every six months and breast cancer screening are warranted for long-term oral contraceptive users.
The purposes of this study are followings. First, I will compare the effects of wive's characteristics with the effects of the husbands' characteristics on the contraceptive use. Second, I will analyzed whether the determinants of the contraceptive use have changed according to parties. Third, I will analyzed whether the determinants of the contraceptive use at each parity have changed according to periods-especially, after and before economic crisis. According to expectation, the ratios using the contraception are affected by the wive's and husband's demographic characteristics, the determinants affecting the contraceptive use have changed by both parity and periods. The other findings are follows. First, women's employment status have positive effects on the contraceptive use, regardless parties and periods. Second, the ideology emphasizing the relationship between parents and children, rather than the ideology emphasizing the relationship between husband and wife, is more like to affect the contraceptive use.
These days Women have repented their past when they were inactive in attaining their own rights and they've payed attentions in gaining their fundamental rights, especially health rights. The spread of contraception use is important to fulfill women's health right. There are a lot of meanings in the contraception use. It makes women can control their reproductive activities such as pregnancy, delivery, and raising children etc. It gives each woman has autonomy of her life. The review reveals high contraceptive rate and high experienced artificial abortion rate in Korea. It means Korean married couples use contraception inefficiently. From 1970's to 1980's, most of the researches in contraceptions were descriptive and survey studies. Since 1990's, the studies have researched in the feministic perspectives. In order to understand experiences of contraceptive behaviors, qualitative researches through indepth interview did. But the number of researches were limited. The relating factors to contraceptive behavior are knowledge, communication between couples, efficiency of contraceptives, self efficacy, attitudes toward contraception, national policy, mass media, public opinion, age, parity, abortion history, ever-used contraceptive method and educational level. Theses factors affect contraception directly and indirectly. Therefore. researches about contraceptives in the future must focus on development of contraceptive behavior assessment tools and further study should be comprehensive and multidementional.
The study is to reveal what the married women has experienced while they were on the contraception. Data were gathered for four mothers beginning on October, 1996. Interviewees were 22 women. Data were analyzed by Colaizz's phenomenological data analysis method. Three basic structures of contraception experience were derived. Those are 'Conflict in choosing contraceptive methods', 'Dilemmar in sexual relationship', and 'Responsibility concerning contraception'. Contraception was a major task of the married women, and they difficulties, because sexual relation was usually initiated by husband and contraception by husband was negatively perceived in Korea culture. Conflict were caused by inavailability of information, side effects of contraceptive methods, and limitation of the contraceptive methods. Interviewees perceived that responsibility of contraception was on them, but they expressed feeling of anger against they burden by contraception. Most interviewees took initiation of contraception to keep their body healthy. Some of the interviewees got husband's cooperation through negotiation and shared responsibility with husband. Suggestions were as follows ; (1) Sex education, especially on communication about sex, is necessary to the married women. (2) Informations on contraception should be provided in the private environment. (3) Studies on husband's contraception experience are required to promote husband's cooperation.
Purpose: This study was done to explore the rates and methods of contraception among Korean adolescents from 2007 to 2009. Methods: The study was a descriptive study. The data were taken from a web-based survey on risk behavior of Korean youth that was conducted between 2007 and 2009 by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: Among adolescents, 4.7% in 2007, 4.6% in 2008, and 4.7% in 2009 reported having had sexual intercourse. In those who had sexual experiences, less than 30% reported consistent use of contraception, whereas more than 45% report no contraceptive use at all. A condom was the most frequently used contraceptive method and its use has increased continuously among contraceptive users. Some of the adolescents were, nevertheless, using unreliable methods such as withdrawal or the rhythm method. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that most adolescents are not using contraception consistently and some were relying on unreliable contraceptive methods. Efforts to raise awareness about consistent and correct contraceptive use and the importance of dual protection are essential.
Objective: This study attempts to gauge the necessity of contraceptive education for women defecting from North Korea (NKDWs). Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with six NKDWs who had lived in the Republic of Korea (ROK) for more than three years, to understand the subjects' perceptions, experiences, and opinions regarding contraception. Thematic analyses were performed using qualitative data provided in the survey results. Results: Before their defections from North Korea, none of the NKDWs had received any sex education. Loop is the only contraceptive method available to married women in ROK. After defection, NKDWs were provided information about contraceptive options available in China, but they could not fully understand this information. Furthermore, the information they received was not accurate. Thus, NKDWs had a high need for contraceptive sex education. As per our survey, their preferred education method was at least 3 lessons plus 1 : 1 counseling, as necessary. Conclusion: This study indicates that a necessity exists for development of a sex education program for NKDWs to enhance their contraceptive knowledge. Thus, government and health managers have a role to play in developing such a program.
This paper is aimed to analyse the recent changes in family planning as a step in an evaluation of the results of the population control policy which has been strenuously pursued by the government since December 1981. The data used in this analysis comes from the 1985 national fertility and family planning survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Population and Health (KIPH) in May 1985. According to the 1985 survey data, there have been great changes in both the contraceptive practice and fertility rates since the strengthening of the government's population control policy in 1 981. The contraceptive practice rate for married women aged 15-44 has increased from 57.7% in 1982 to 70.3% in 1985, an increase of 12.6% points in the short span of only 3 years. During the same period, the total fertility rate has declined from 2.7 in 1982 to the population replacement level which was planned to achieve by 1 988. More than 80% of women aged over 30 or with two children or more are practicing contraception, while the practice rates of women with 0-1 children are 14.0% and 45.1% respectively. The survey has revealed that the increase of contraceptive practice rate during 1982-1985 has mainly attributed to the high acceptance of sterilization procedures which practice rate of the married women has increased from 28.1% to 40.3% for the period. Also, the survey data shows that 24.7% of those women with only one child is practicing contraception for thepurpose of fertility termination. The government, taking into account of rapid changes in contraceptive practice and fertility rates, is formulating a population plan during the sixth fiveyear economic and social development plan (1987-1991) to achieve 1% ofpopulation growth rate by 1993, which was planned to realize by 2000. In order to meet this demographic goal, the existing population control policy measures should be improved to be suited to the recent contraceptive use and fertility changes. From this standpoint, the following considerations should be put forth; 1) improvement of the current program management systems including target allocation and evaluation schems for recruiting new acceptors in the young 20s groups to use contraceptives for birth spacing and to increase high continuation rates through the strengthening of follow-up services for the acceptors, 2) increase of self-supporting contraceptive users by promoting commercial advertisements on contraceptives through mass media including T.V. and radio, 3) development of social support policies including incentive schems, and strengthening of IE & C activities for increasing the proportion of the one-child family, 4) strengthening of population and family planning education in and out school youth, and 5) strengthening of management capabilities at the provincial and local program managers.
The purpose of this study was to develop and test the structural model of a contraceptive behavior in Married Korean women. A hypothesis model was constructed on the basis of the health belief model, the theory of planned behavior and extensive literature review of contraception. The model was built by seven constructs. Four exogeneous variables included in the model were consisted of the contraceptive knowledges, the perceived threats, the sexual autonomy and the communication within a couple. Four endogenous variables were consisted of the attitudes toward contraception, the perceived control, the ability to plan a intercourse and the contraceptive behaviors. Empirical data for testing the hypothetical model were collected by the self report questionnaires from 243 Korean married women. The questionnaires used in this study were developed by this researcher and their Cronbach's alpha scores were ranged from .60 to .88. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS program(ver. 8.0) for descriptive statistical analysis and LISREL program(ver. 8.12a) for covariance structural analysis. On the basis of this results, it could be suggested that contraceptive behaviors be greatly affected by the perceived threats, the communications within couple, the attitudes toward contraception and the perceived control. Finally this model would be useful for the practice, theory and research of nursing.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Contraceptive Self-efficacy (K-CSE) scale. Methods: The K-CSE scale was developed through forward-backward translation methods. Construct and criterion validity and internal consistency reliability were calculated using SPSS/WIN 21.0. Data were collected from 257 women students from two universities in G city, South Korea. Results: The factor structure of the K-CSE scale showed the cumulative variance as 62.9% in the factor analysis. Factor loading of 13 items on four subscales ranged from .47 to .88. Factors were named as 'initiative of contraceptive use', 'sexual assertiveness', 'refusal of sexual intercourse', and 'autonomic sexual behavior'. Criterion validity compared to the Sexual Autonomy Measurement (SAM) showed significant correlation. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the reliability of each subscale were .50~.82 and .76 for the total scale. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that the K-CSE scale is a satisfactory valid and reliable scale. Therefore, the CSE scale can be useful in measuring contraceptive self-efficacy among women university students in Korea.
