Crack opening governs many transfer properties that play a pivotal role in durability analyses. Instead of trying to combine continuum and discrete models in computational analyses, it would be attractive to derive from the continuum approach an estimate of crack opening, without considering the explicit description of a discontinuous displacement field in the computational model. This is the prime objective of this contribution. The derivation is based on the comparison between two continuous variables: the distribution if the effective non local strain that controls damage and an analytical distribution of the effective non local variable that derives from a strong discontinuity analysis. Close to complete failure, these distributions should be very close to each other. Their comparison provides two quantities: the displacement jump across the crack [U] and the distance between the two profiles. This distance is an error indicator defining how close the damage distribution is from that corresponding to a crack surrounded by a fracture process zone. It may subsequently serve in continuous/discrete models in order to define the threshold below which the continuum approach is close enough to the discrete one in order to switch descriptions. The estimation of the crack opening is illustrated on a one-dimensional example and the error between the profiles issued from discontinuous and FE analyses is found to be of a few percents close to complete failure.
In this study, 2D shallow tunnel model test using close range photogrammetric technique was conducted with aluminium rods simulating continuum granular material. Numerical analysis was also carried out in order to identify the behaviour of subsurface deformations caused by shallow tunnelling. Direction and magnitude of displacement vectors from the model test were identical to the result of numerical analysis based on the model data. In particular, it is shown that the vector direction was toward a point below the tunnel invert level. A narrow "chimney or tulip like" pattern of vertical displacement was confirmed by both the model test and numerical analysis. This behaviour is consistent with the field data. In addition to the qualitative comparison, the quantitative result of subsurface settlements according to 2D volume loss showed good agreement between the model test and numerical analysis. Therefore, close range photogrammetric technique applied in the model test may be used to validate the result from the continuum numerical analysis.
The comprehension and structural modeling of masonry constructions is fundamental to safeguard the integrity of built cultural assets and intervene through adequate actions, especially in earthquake-prone regions. Despite the availability of several modeling strategies and modern computing power, modeling masonry remains a great challenge because of still demanding computational efforts, constraints in performing destructive or semi-destructive in-situ tests, and material uncertainties. This paper investigates the shear behavior of masonry walls by applying a plane-stress FE continuum model with the Modified Masonry-like Material (MMLM). Epistemic uncertainty affecting input parameters of the MMLM is considered in a probabilistic framework. After appointing a suitable probability density function to input quantities according to prior engineering knowledge, uncertainties are propagated to outputs relying on gPCE-based surrogate models to considerably speed up the forward problem-solving. The sensitivity of the response to input parameters is evaluated through the computation of Sobol' indices pointing out the parameters more worthy to be further investigated, when dealing with the seismic assessment of masonry buildings. Finally, masonry mechanical properties are calibrated in a probabilistic setting with the Bayesian approach to the inverse problem based on the available measurements obtained from the experimental load-displacement curves provided by shear compression in-situ tests.
In this paper, the energy-based plastic-damage model previously proposed by the authors [International Journal of Solids and Structures, 43(3-4): 583-612] is first simplified with an empirically defined evolution law for the irreversible strains, and then it is extended to its rate-dependent version to account for the strain rate effect. Regarding the energy dissipation by the motion of the structure under dynamic loadings, within the framework of continuum damage mechanics a new damping model is proposed and incorporated into the developed rate-dependent plastic-damage mode, leading to a unified constitutive model which is capable of directly considering the damping on the material scale. Pertinent computational aspects concerning the numerical implementation and the algorithmic consistent modulus for the unified model are also discussed in details, through which the dynamic nonlinear analysis of damping structures can be coped with by the same procedures as those without damping. The proposed unified plastic-damage model is verfied by the simulations of concrete specimens under different quasistatic and high rate straining loading conditions, and is then applied to the Koyna dam under earthquake motions. The numerical predictions agree fairly well with the results obtained from experimental tests and/or reported by other investigators, demonstrating its capability for reproducing most of the typical nonlinear performances of concrete under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions.

A new plastic-damage constitutive model applicable to lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC) is proposed in this paper based on both continuum damage mechanics and plasticity theories. Two damage variables are used to represent tensile and compressive damage independently. The effective stress is computed in the Drucker-Prager multi-surface plasticity framework. The stress is then computed by multiplication of the damaged part and the effective part. The proposed model is coded as a user material subroutine and incorporated in a finite element analysis software. The constitutive integration algorithm is implemented by adopting the operator split involving elastic predictor, plastic corrector and damage corrector. The numerical study shows that the algorithm is efficient and robust in the finite element analysis. Experimental investigation is conducted to verify the proposed model involving both static and dynamic tests. The very good agreement between the numerical results and experimental results demonstrates the capability of the proposed model to capture the behaviors of LWC and NWC structures for static and impact loading.

Based on combined continuum-fracture mechanics, fracture criterion was utilized to predict impact performance of advanced high-strength steel sheets: 340R and TWIP940. The macro-crack propagation behavior at high stress triaxiality was characterized by V-notch tests while deformation behavior at high strain rate was characterized by simple tension tests with various cross head speeds. The characterized mechanical properties were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to simulate the charpy impact tests, which showed good agreement with experiments.
This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.

This paper introduces a structural damage identification method to identify 4he multiple directional damages generated within a cylindrical shell by using the measured frequency response function (FRF). The equations of motion for a damaged cylindrical shell are derived. by using a theory of continuum damage mechanics in which a small material volume containing a directional damage is represented by the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness. In contrast with most existing vibration-based structural damage identification methods which require the modal Parameters measured in both intact and damaged states, the present method requires only the FRF-data measured at damaged state. Numerically simulated damage identification tests are conducted to verify the feasibility of the Proposed structural damage identification method.

Due to their intrinsic anisotropy, composite materials show quite complicated damage mechanism with their fiber orientation and stacking sequence and especially, their fatigue damage process is sequential occurrence of matrix cracking, delamination and fiber breakage. In the study, to propose new model capable of describing damage mechanism under fatigue loading, fatigue analysis of composite laminates based on damage mechanics, are performed. The average stress is disassembled with stress components of matrix, fiber and interlaminar interface through stress analysis. Each stress components are used to assess static damage analysis based on continuum damage mechanics (C.D.M.). Fatigue damage curves are obtained from hysteresis loop and assessed by the fatigue damage analysis. Then, static and fatigue damage analysis are combined. Expected results such as stress-cycle relation are verified by the experimental results of fatigue tests.

In the concurrent engineering, the CAD-based design model is necessary for multidisciplinary analysis and for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). A shape and configuration design velocity field computation of structure has been developed using a computer-aided design (CAD) tool, Pro/ENGINEER. The design Parameterization with CAD tool is to characterize the change in dimensions and movements of geometric control points that govern the shape/orientation of the structural boundary. The boundary velocity is obtained by using a CAD-based finite difference method and the domain velocity field is obtained from finite element analysis (FEA) using the boundary displacement method. In this paper, the continuum configuration DSA for NVH problem, which requires the shape velocity field and the orientation velocity field at the same time, is developed using linear shape functions. For validation of continuum design sensitivity coefficients, design sensitivity coefficients are compared with the coefficients computed using by the finite difference method.
