  • Hypercholesterolemia has been regarded as a major risk factor of coronary heart disease(CHD). CHD is increasing in recent years among Koreans due to westernization of lifestyle and dietary behaviors. In the United States, implementation of the National Cholesterol Education Program(NCEP) had resulted 40% decline in mortality from CHD. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of medical nutrition therapy on serum lipid levels and discuss the effective nutrition education contents. Thirty outpatients(Male 40%, female 60%) with hypercholesterolemia were educated by medical nutrition therapy(MNT) protocol. At first visit and after three months of MNT, we assessed serum lipid profile, body weight and surveyed general characteristics, lifestyle and food habits through questionnaire. After 12 weeks of MNT, there were significant reductions in serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C). Foods habits and lifestyle were changed to the desirable patterns. These results indicate that lipid profile is improved by changes of dietary behaviors and lifestyle. Especially in case of obesity, cholesterol lowering effect of MNT was more powerful. Consequently, MNT is effective on reduction of serum lipids by behavior change in hypercholesterolemic patients.

  • This study examined the effects of task-oriented occupational therapy without action observation training and action observation on hemiplegic patients' upper extremity functions and activities of daily living. The stroke patients were randomly and equally assigned to an experimental group (action observation) and a control group (task-oriented occupational therapy). They received the intervention five times per week, 30 minutes per each time, for five weeks. In order to look at upper extremity functions of the paretic side before and after the intervention, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) and Box and Bock Test (BBT) were conducted and in order to compare activities of daily living, Korean-Version of Modified Barthel index (K-MBI) was examined. According to the results, upper extremity functions and activities of daily living in both groups increased and there was no difference between the two groups. Therefore, action observation and task-oriented occupational therapy had positive effects on stroke patients' upper extremity functions and activities of daily living.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature on music interventions for youth with intellectual disability. Characteristics of the music intervention, target goal domains, and the quality of statements on intervention contents and rationale were explored. What type of intervention was applied in each target goal domain and how studies differed in terms of the quality of stated rationales depending on the authors' field of study were also analyzed. A total of 20 articles published in KCI journals were identified. The analysis showed the differences in intervention contents depending on the authors' research field and target goal areas. In addition, it was found that only two studies stated an appropriate rationale based on the theory of music therapy and relevant research. Discrepancies on the quality of rationale between researchers with music therapy majors and with non-music therapy majors indicated the importance of the music therapy professionalism in expecting and interpreting the intervention outcomes. These findings highlight the ways in which music intervention studies could be improved to further the field and contribute to the rigor of these interventions for youth with intellectual disability.

A 6-week occupational therapy program including both training and exercise for prevention of fall down was applied by dividing into 13 persons of experimental group and 13 persons of control group for female elderly aged more than 65 years who were capable of independence gait and have not taken any drug to adversely affect balance. For balance ability assessment, the Berg balance scale and the Tetrax fall index were used. The Berg balance scale in experimental group was shown to be 48.38 to 50.69 through the 6-week program, indicating changes in significance level(p=.017). The Tetrax fall index in experimental group was shown to be 46.77 to 35.54 through the 6-week program(p=.000). Changes in significance level were not found for both the Berg balance scale and the Tetrax fall index in control group. As seen from the results of this study, it is found that 6-week application of the fall-preventive occupational therapy program including fall prevention training and exercise was effective for promotion of elderly's balance ability, and further studies just on the effect of fall prevention training are required to be made.

  • This study is aimed at verifying the effects of an ETC(Expressive Therapies Continuum)-based group art therapy program on reducing parental anxiety in first-grade elementary school students' mothers. An ETC program was composed based on the therapeutic factors of the ETC components. Seven mothers of first-grade students located in city A of Gyeonggi-do were selected as the subjects of the study. These mothers underwent 11 sessions of ETC-based group art therapy from April 18 to May 24, 2019, 1 to 2 times a week for 70 to 90 minutes. In order to verify the effectiveness of this research program, scores from pre- and post-parental anxiety scales were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 program. Results demonstrated that first, mothers' parental anxiety was significantly reduced after the ETC program participation. Second, changes in ETC component use throughout the program positively influenced reductions in parental anxiety. In conclusion, each participant experienced the opportunity to self-explore and self-understand at all levels of ETC with their preferred art medium, thereby lowering parenting anxiety. It is meaningful that through the ETC-based art therapy program, the client can be self-aware of his or her problem, and the client can decide the direction that is beneficial to them through voluntary media selection. In addition, it is meaningful that the ETC group art therapy is able to perform activities tailored to each individual.
