  • The unconfined compressive strength of soil-cement mixed with red mud, an industrial by-product of alumina production, was investigated in the laboratory. The investigation involved laboratory tests under the various conditions such as red mud content, cement content, fly ash content and ratio of soil replacement with sands. The unconfined compressive strength tests were performed at 7, 14 and 21 days after specimen preparation. Results of the study show that the unconfined compressive strength increased as red mud and fly ash content decreased and cement content increased. Increasing the soil replacement ratio with sands had an insignificant effect on compressive strength because the soil had a similar particle size as the replacement sands.

  • This study is to investigate the conditions closely related to the establishment of vegetation in the riparian zone: the soil condition, an important factor along with climate and light. Especially, the soil structure of the microtopographical formations in the specific area known as the riparian microtopographical zone investigated. In addition, the effect of the riparian microtopographical features on the ground water level, soil moisture content, and vegetation was studied. The results of this study are as follows; 1) At all sample sites, below the sand layer, a gravel layer is always present. This is the result of past floods. 2) Although Salix koreensis experiences frequent disturbances such as increase in river level and floods, this vegetation establishes itself in the most secure are in the microtopographical zone. 3) The growth of Phragmites japonica is closely related to the underground water level. 4) It is clear that Miscanthus sacchariflorus grows concentrated in dry areas. 5) The soil accumulation conditions differ according to the soil moisture content of each microtopgraphical feature. Accordingly, the moisture content of the soil is clearly different within the microtopographical zone. The continuous and long-term investigation and research on the relation of riparian reproduction and the relevance with location surrounding factors are necessary in the future.

  • The effect of the vinyl acetate (VA) content on the thermal, viscoelastic, rheological, morphological and mechanical behaviors in various blends of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers was investigated using 28, 22 and $15 mol\%$ of VA in EVA. In the DSC melting and crystallization thermograms of all of the EVA systems blended with ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers, discrete peaks were observed which were related to the constituents. In the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, the storage modulus increased with increasing content of ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers. In addition, the transition regions relating to the tan bpeaks varied with the VA content. The crossover point between G' and G" varied depending on the VA contents, and shear-thinning was more prominent in the EVA/EtBC system. In the SEM investigation, a discrete phase morphology was observed in both the EVA/EtBC and EVA/EtOC blends, but the contrast improved with decreasing VA content. However, the tensile strength and modulus improved, but the elongation at break reduced with decreasing VA content, implying that the ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers play the role of reinforcing materials. Thus, the EVA and ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin components in the copolymers are immiscible in the molten and solid states, but are nevertheless mechanically compatible.

  • The purpose of this investigation is to observe tha variation of vitamin $B_{12}$, nicotinic acid and folic acid contents in relation to the growing years of Panax Ginseng roots. The contents of the vitamins were estiamted microbiologically with Lactobacillus leichmannii, Lactobacillus arabinosus and Streptococcus faecalis, respectively. It is found that the content of vitamin $B_{12}$ in Panax Ginseng roots somewhat increases according to their growing years except 3-year-old roots. It is probable that the lower content in these roots should be due to the cultivating soil. The content of nicotinic acid in all the roots is not significantly different. The result of paper chromatography using the concentrated extract of the roots suggests that there exists some other substance besides nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, of which Rf value is 0.5 in comparison with the Rf 0.75 of nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. It is thought that this substance stimulate the growth of L. arabinosus. The content of folic acid is significantly different. The content level is the highest in the 4-year-old roots and the lowest in the 6-year-old roots.

  • Investigation on the compressibility and shear strength of compacted loess is of great importance for the design and operation of engineering infrastructures in filling area. In this study, the mechanical behaviors of Yan'an compacted loess are investigated at various dry densities and water contents by conducting one dimensional compression and direct shear tests. And the elastic compressibility, plastic compressibility, yield stress and strength are obtained from the experiments. Results show that when water content increases, plastic compressibility parameter increases, but yield stress decreases. However, the increase of dry density leads to a decrease in plastic compressibility parameter but an increase in yield stress. In addition, elastic compressibility parameter is found to be a constant which is irrelevant to water content and dry density. As for strength, cohesion and internal friction angle is directly proportional to dry density, but inversely proportional to water content. Moreover, the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were also performed to observe the pore size distribution and microstructure of the specimens. Finally, by using results of MIP and SEM tests, the compressibility and strength behaviours of Yan'an compacted loess are explained from the perspective of pore-size distribution and microstructure.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the status and prospects of seed quality researches in rapeseed. Rapeseed Quality was mainly related to oil and protein content, fatty acid composition and glucosinolate content. Hence, breeding for improvement of rapeseed Quality has been emphasized as follows: 1) inheritance mode, 2) investigation of germplasm, 3) establishment of analysis technique, 4) establishment of selection method, 5) idealization of cultural technique. The oil quality is determined by its fatty acids. Fatty acids have been determined by gas chromatography. To improve oil quality was emphasized for zero erucic acid, the highest possible linoleic acid and the lowest possible linolenic acid content. Rapeseed meal is not considered as top quality feed ingredient although it has higher protein content and well-balanced amino acid composition. This is mainly because of the presence of considerable amounts of glucosinolates. Thus the reduction of glucosinolate content in rapeseed meal is of great importance. In breeding for meal quality, low glucosinolate lines (plants) were selected and analyzed by gas chromatography and UV-spectrophotometer. Current problems and future researches of rapeseed quality in Korea are 1) improvement of researcher's number and facilities, 2) depression of animal feeding trials, 3) unsatisfied relationship between research and manufacturing and products field, 4) improvement of fertility for yellow and thin seed coat lines crossed between mustard and rapeseed, 5) establishment of new rapid analysing system for rapeseed quality.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the actual conditions of primary school science teaching and ways to improve it. In elementary science teaching, teachers themselves tend to have science misconceptions and insufficient science content knowledge. Experienced teachers argued that it could be hard for elementary teachers with lack of science content knowledge to provide their students with meaningful learning experiences of science. Based on the general characteristics of elementary teaching and the awareness of elementary teachers' insufficient science content knowledge, we explored the real situation of the elementary science classroom. We conducted open-ended interviews with teachers and focus group discussions on a regular basis to analyze and compare classes of five primary school teachers. Data analysis focused on why elementary students avoid science classes in upper grades of elementary school and why elementary science classes always need hands-on activities. We also discussed ways to turn hands-on investigation into minds-on investigation by connecting it to important ideas in science. Based on the results, we suggested ways to improve inservice teacher training such as designing supplementary in-service training focused on content knowledge for primary school teachers, setting up professional exchange or collaboration between primary and secondary teachers, and introducing subject-specialized teachers for the fifth and sixth graders of primary school. In particular, considering elementary teachers' insufficient science content knowledge, employing science subject matter specialists in the elementary school could be a useful strategy.

  • This investigation was attempted to determine changes in chlorophyll. Pheophytin content PH and titratable acidity during young redish Kim chi fermentation. Young redishes divied in to leaf and vein and fermented in dark room for 35 days at 10$^{\circ}C$ after pickling each group. Samples were collected at 5 days interval for the chemical analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. Chlorophyll content in young redish was decreased by decreasing PH during fermentation periods. Chlorophyll content decreased from 11.60mg/g to 7.62mg/g in leaf, from 0.48mg/g to 0.33mg/g in vein respectively during 35 days fermentation periods. In contrast to chlorophyll. pheophytin content increased as chlorophyll content decreased during the period. The ratio of chlorophyll a and b content in young redish about 3 : 1 in leaf and vein and decreased nearly the same ratio during fermentation periods. In case of pheophytin a and b it was increased without any relation with the ratio chlorophyll a and b. In generally, the optimum PH for eating was known 4.3 to 5.0. Young redish Kim chi was reached the optimun PH at 15 to 25 days of fermentation at 10$^{\circ}C$. At this periods. Chlorophyll content varied from 11.32mg/g to 9.30mg/g for leaf and from 0.43mg/g to 3.37mg/g for vein, respectively. 2. Titratable acidity(as lactic acid) was increased to 0.54% in leaf at 20 days fermentation period during Kim chi fermentation. and nearly unchanged until 30days. At the end of fermentation period the titratable acidity was about 0.30%. Titratable acidity was increased as decreasing pH. and the correlation coefficients was -0.92 in leaf and -0.77 in Vien. 3. Correlation between titratable acidity and chlorophll, pheophytin content was not significant statistically.
