In the 21st century, boundary between different fields is coming down, convergence and consilience are taking place. It would not be an exaggeration to say key buzzword of the 21st century is 'convergence'. Also in the field of art and design, the border between the two areas is getting more ambiguous. With the reason, both the new awareness and interest on Art Furniture are becoming more heightened. So far as part of the decorative art category Art Furniture was covered. However Art Furniture is now no longer a fixture of that field, but became independent as a new genre of art. As proof of this, at the international representative art fairs including the Design Miami, PAD London, and The Salon of Art and Design which was recently established in New York, etc. Art Furniture is becoming a showcase as the main pieces. Moreover, at the world's major art market Sotheby's, Christie's, and Seoul Auction, Art Furniture's position is more successfully becoming extended. At this point the analysis of the status and the cause on the non-boundary phenomena between art and design is inevitably required to understand the disposition of the public and to develop the domestic furniture industry. Thus, this paper purposes to present the new direction for that the domestic Art Furniture encompasses the two areas with satisfaction to the demands of the public by studying on the non-boundary phenomena between art and design in contemporary Art Furniture.

This study explored contemporary furniture theory and practice in Postmodernism mentioned as one of a kind furniture based on ideas from the tradition since Modernism. Qualitative conceptual analysis as the principal methodology was used to explore the postmodern furniture adopting or reflecting ornament from the tradition presented as postmodern furniture designers' point of view differently and variously. Thus, the examples about one of a kind or one-off furniture were dealt with Postmodern ideas appeared in the doubt over Modernism, Post-Modern furniture ideas from the traditional and Modern architecture, ornamental ism, Postmodern theorists, Postmodern furniture and the criteria. As a result, although one of a kind furniture design appealed newly from and based on the ornament of the tradition has been identified as new design like one of a kind furniture which shows lack of function, the piece with the meaningful ornament makes people happier in their daily life. Hence, one of a kind furniture, a work of art, has been required as striking a balance both function or comfort and aesthetics or beauty which makes the people more enjoyable.

Bauhaus, founded in Weimar, Germany in 1919, represented Modernism which is proven in the field of art as well as architecture. Furthermore, in design field, Bauhaus is the essential historical event whose influence continues in contemporary design. Bauhaus furniture is simple and austere and has linear shapes which are suitable for mass production. Bauhaus developed functional furniture design such as knock-down and pre-fabricated furniture. In terms of finishes, Bauhaus furniture epitomizes the influence of De Stijl which used either achromatic colors and three primary colors or natural finishes of wood. Bauhaus contributed to furniture design field as below. 1. Success in mass-produced furniture through standardization and pre-fabrication 2. Pioneered on industrialization through collaboration between academia and industry 3. played essential role developing modem furniture by using not only metal but also such diverse materials as plywood, glass, and leather

Since Cubists represented a way of expressing image moving away from traditional illusion effect, new realities represented by collage and assemblage. Furthermore, Marcel Duchamp, a French Dadaist, suggested the concept of ready-made that everyday objects exhibited in an odd way in a gallery. These early fine art cases highly influenced to furniture design in the second half of the twentieth century. The use of objects in contemporary furniture is closely related to the emergence of Pop Art in the late 1950s and that of Postmodernism. After the 1970s the use of found objects were frequently utilized in furniture design of all over the countries. As an ecological issue became a new consideration to furniture designers, found objects also gave a chance to use recycled materials. Even in studio furniture area which is considered wood as a major material at the early stage, many studio furniture designers began to adapt found objects in their designs as a new source of Inspiration after the 1970s. This study explored various examples of found objects in furniture design and examined the meaning of the use in different designers and regions.

The study aimed at investigating the terms for each type of the current household furniture and at analyzing a standard based on those terms researched for the furniture, not including kitchen and child furniture. The study was conducted in sales and R&D division of major furniture brands such as Jang-In Gagu, Borneo, and Livart by surveying their staffs, and then, the investigated names were classified according to similar criteria and it was finally analyzed by the definite standard of the names made. In the results, the following 5 standards largely play roles for the naming. First, name according to requirements, second, construction of door, third, materials, fourth, shapes, and lastly, function. Except for the terms of "Sobari" expressed only as Japanese and "living room cabinet of Extension-type" using Korean and English along, most of the names show furniture in detail, and the names from Hangeul, Korean alphabet and from the English have recently and drastically increased with the lifestyle change influenced from Western world.

This article aimed at identifying the concept of 'artistic-quality' of furniture and presenting the concept of 'artistic-quality based furniture creation' as the future direction of furniture design. For this, the authors approached to the theoretical background of the concept of artistic-quality, and then examined the prospect of practical application of the concept by analyzing the tendencies in today's art furniture. In this light, 'artistic-quality' of furniture could be understood as a quality that triggers the designer's venturous spirit throughout the process of furniture creation, so that the designer keeps seeking for the novelty and innovation in his experimental design and process. The feature of the current tendencies of art furniture in terms of the expression and effect, which could explain this venturous spirit of artistic-quality based furniture creation, could be summarized as follows; first, High-touch: Furniture that exemplifies the artistic-quality by specific texture of handmade quality, second, High-feeling: Furniture that arouses the new feelings and new concepts of furniture structure & function by experiments on new abstract forms of furniture, and third, High-mentality: Furniture that leads us to the sphere of subtle aesthetic recognition and mentality with its specific poetic expression and sensibility.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic as to how the Indonesian traditional space is expressed in a contemporary space. As for the study method, We visited 12 Indonesian restaurants in Jakarta from Oct. 16 to Oct. 20, 2010 for a case study. The study result is presented as follows: First, as a factor of facade components, the roof part revealed its identity as a Joglo structure. Walls, windows and doors reflected Indonesian tradition, or were transformed in passive or aggressive ways. Second, as a factor of interior space components, ceilings were predominantly designed by reflecting a structural exposure ceiling or Tumpang Sari as it was or by passively transforming them; Interior walls, windows and doors were transformed in aggressive ways. Third, regarding the factors of interior decoration components, traditional furniture was not used, but instead, furniture with contemporary form and local materials were dominently used, and traditional accessaries were used as they were. Therefore, in the case of designing spatial componentss in Indonesian restaurants located in Jakarta, roofs and ceilings, floors, furniture, and accessaries reflected Indonesian tradition, or were passively transformed, whereas walls, windows, doors, and some ceilings aggressively reflected modernized tradition so that they were formed in harmony with traditional and contemporary styles.

Since 1990s the concern on essence and inside has transferred onto the surface and its style. The longing for plastic surgery and skin beauty might prove this fervent tendency. Furthermore the development of digital media and technology as well as high-tech material enabled this hope to be real in the realm of design. All these progresses and transitions toward the surface introduced more creative and novel phenomena of furniture design arena around its surface. The rising of surface has evolved through architecture, interior design and furniture. The surface of furniture can be easily transposed into the human skin. And it acquires the aspects of skin's metaphoric and symbolic meaning. The characteristics of skin effect in furniture design can be summarized as material aspects, relational aspects, and formal aspects. Material aspects shows skin's elasticity and smooth plane. Relational aspects express the reactive functions of skin. Formal aspects represent organic power through surface.

Space given at home, furniture is an important condition to determine its size. As a method for satisfying outer and functional human needs, ever changing, shaped form has also been developed. Modern people tend to decorate the beautiful living space to the needs of the beauty and space of living. In order to satisfy these requirements, the development of furniture to suit the taste of modern people is required. In this study, we add together the design and contemporary design of traditional Korean and use of raw wood can feel the natural and applied to furniture retro design. It is possible to have a motif characteristic of Hanok traditional to suggest a design where you can feel the sensitivity with retro in the direction of the current design change is large and diverse, and in harmony with the living space of modern it is an object that you study the production lighting and storage furniture with the complexity of the traditional and modern.

Increasing consumers' individuality and their desire of revelation, owing to accumulation of economic wealth, are making furniture designs more differentiated and various in its method and theme. Trends of contemporary furniture designs are changing from pursuing the functional efficiency of mere usage of their product in the past to satisfying the desire of consumers with full consideration of their emotional aspects, that is, the design that helps consumers communicate with products. In these trends, it is necessary to analyze the emotional factor of consumers for the examination of their emotional desire and apply its analysis to the furniture design.
