The success of stabilization treatment in heavy metal contaminated sediment depends on the heavy metal bioavailability reduction through the sequestration of the heavy metals. This study was performed to assess the changes in the bioavailability of Pb or Cd in the Pb or Cd contaminated sediments by using birnessite and hydroxyapatite as stabilizing agents. The toxicity tests were carried out using a microorganism (Vibrio fischeri), an amphipod (Hyalella azteca) and an earthworm (Eisenia foetida). With Vibrio fischeri, the toxicities of both Pb and Cd were reduced by more than ten times in the presence of birnessite and hydroxyapatite compared to that of in the absence of birnessite and hydroxyapatite. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in the contaminated sediments were lethal to Hyalella azteca, however, in the presence of birnessite and hydroxyapatite more than 90%, on average, of Hyalella azteca survived. With Eisenia foetida, the bioaccumulated concentrations of both Pb and Cd were reduced by more than 75%, on average, lower with the addition of birnessite and hydroxyapatite to the contaminated sediments. These results show that the addition of birnessite and hydroxyapatite can reduce the bioavailability of Pb and Cd in contaminated sediments. In addition, the in situ and ex situ performance of birnessite and hydroxyapatite as stabilizing agents can be verified using the toxicity tests with Hyalella azteca and Eisenia foetida, respectively.

Removal efficiency of PCBs in contaminated marine sediments treated by Fenton-like oxidation combined with surfactant was investigated in this research in order to achieve remediation of PCBs. A washing treatment using various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (1% and 15%) and surfactants (Triton X-100, Tween 60 and Tween 80) was evaluated at various conditions in laboratory scale experiments. The mean removal efficiencies of tPCBs varied from 24.1 to 46.7% in the sediments for 1 hour duration of the treatments. The concentration of tPCBs in contaminated marine sediments after the simultaneous treatment with hydrogen peroxide and surfactant satisfied the domestic environmental standards for the beneficial use of sediments. When suitable surfactant was used for Fenton-like oxidation, the removal efficiency of tPCBs at low concentration of hydrogen peroxide was similar to that at high hydrogen peroxide concentration. Thus the efficient removal of PCBs in contaminated marine sediments could be achieved through treatment with Fenton-like oxidation combined with surfactant washing.
Dredging and disposal is a conventional method to remove contaminated sediments. However, there are some problems in dredging and disposal, such as disturbance of contaminated sediments, disposal site determination, and high construction cost. Recently, in-situ capping which overcomes the problems of dredging and disposal is widely applied to isolate local contaminated sites. Numerical studies, which have been conducted to simulate contaminant transport during in-situ capping, have been concerned mainly with diffusive transport. However, contaminated sediments experience large strain consolidation induced by self-weight because of initially high moisture content of sediments, and contaminant transport results from advection and diffusion. Previous studies focus on contaminant transport during consolidation, but have neglected consolidation effect on long-term contaminant transport in sediments. This study presents numerical simulation results of consolidation effect on long-term contaminant transport in sediments.

This paper investigated remediation options for contaminated sediments with heavy metals. Twenty three sediment samples were taken from three different depths of 0.5m, 1.5m and 2.5m. The concentration of Heavy metals Cu, Pb, and Hg were measured. The concentration of copper far exceeded the Sediment Quality Guideline in U.S.A and Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines in Canada. Therefore, remediation of the sediments is requried to protect the benthos. Two remediation options were suggested : dredging of the organic sediments as deep as about 85cm followed by surface covers with clean soil, and in-situ stabilization of tile sediments using lime or cement followed by surface cover with clean soil.

A amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus was exposed to Ag contaminated sediments to evaluate relative importance of various uptake routes (sediment, porewater, supplementary food) for Ag bioaccumulation in sediment-dwelling marine invertebrates. Additionally, influence of AVS (acid-volatile sulfide) on the partitioning of Ag to porewater and on the Ag bioavailability was determined to evaluate the utility of AVS criteria for the management of metal contaminated sediment. The experimental sediments were spiked with 4 levels of Ag (0.1-3.3 ${\mu}$mol Ag/g) and AVS concentrations were manipulated to 40 or <0.5 ${\mu}$mol/g, then equilibrated for >2 months to allow pore water/particulate distributions similar to nature. A L. plumulosus was incubated in the contaminated sediments with overlying water for 35d. During the exposure, the amphipods was fed with supplementary food ($TetraMin^{(R)}$) with or without Ag contamination. Following exposure, tissue Ag in L. plumulosus was strongly correlated with the weak acid extractable Ag in sediments ($r^{2}$=0.87, p<0.001). The ratio of AVS to Ag-SEM (Ag extracted simulaneouls with AVS) had a strong influence on porewater Ag concentration, consistent with previous studies. However, Ag bioaccumulation in L. plumulosus was not influenced by AVS concentrations. The amphipods fed Ag contaminated food took up ${\sim}$ 1.8 X Ag accumulated by the amphipods fed uncontaminated supplementary diet. The result suggests that the benthic invertebrates exposed to metal contaminated sediments would accumulate metals largely via ingestion of contaminated sediments and food, with minor contribution from dissolved sources of porewater and overlying water.
A laboratory microcosm experiment was conducted to evaluate a major metal uptake route as well as chronic toxic effects of the clam, Macoma balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments. Twenty five clams were exposed to the sediments contaminated with four levels of Ag $Ag(0.01-0.87\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and $Cu(0.75-5.55\mu{mol\;g^{-1})$ for 90 days. AVS (acid volatile sulfide) concentration in the sediments, considered as major factor controlling metal geochemistry and bioavailability, was manipulated to evaluate its effects on Ag and Cu bioaccumulation in M. balthica. Following 90-d exposure, the tissue Ag and Cu in M. balthica increased linearly with the Ag and Cu concentrations in sediments extracted with 1 N HCI (SEM, simultaneously extracted metals with AVS). The bioaccumulation of Ag and Cu in M. balthica was little influenced by difference in [SEM] - [AVS] values, suggesting a minor contribution of pore water metals to bioaccumulation. Tissue Ag and Cu concentrations directly influenced on the clearance rate and glycogen content of the clams. The clams with highest tissue Ag $(1.0\pm{0.2}\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and Cu concentrations $(2.7\pm{0.3}\;\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ had only 18-43% of clearance of the clams exposed to uncontaminated sediments. Similarly, glycogen content of the exposed clams had a inverse relationship with tissue Ag and Cu concentrations. These results suggest that M. balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments accumulates metals largely by ingestion of contaminated sediments and can display chronic effects as reduced clearance rate and glycogen content.
When rivers and lakes are contaminated with numerous contaminants, usually the contaminants are finally deposited on the sediments of the waterbody. Many clean up technologies have been developed for the contaminated sediments. Among several technologies dredging is one of the best methods because dredging removes all the contaminated sediments from the water and the contaminated sediments can be completely treated with physical and chemical methods. However the most worried phenomenon is suspension of fine particles during the dredging process. The suspended particle can release contaminants into water and resulted in spread of the contaminants and the increase of risk due to the resuspension of the precipitated contaminants such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Therefore the success of the dredging process depends on the prevention of resuspension of fine particles. Advanced dredging processes employ pumping the sediment with water onto a ship and release the turbid water pumped with sediment into waterbody after collection of sediment solids. Before release of the turbid water into lake or river, just a few minutes allowed to precipitate the suspended particle due to the limited area on a dredging ship. However the fine particle cannot be removed by the gravitational settling over a few minutes. Environmental technology such as coagulation and precipitation could be applied for the settling of fine particles. However, the process needs coagulants and big settling tanks. For the quick settling of the fine particles suspended during dredging process magnetic separation has been tested in current study. Magnetic force increased the settling velocity and the increased settling process can reduce the volume of settling tank usually located in a ship for dredging. The magnetic assisted settling also decreased the heavy metal release through the turbid water by precipitating highly contaminated particles with magnetic force.

Pollutants from industry, mining, agriculture, and other sources have contaminated sediments in many surface water bodies. Sediment contamination poses a severe threat to human health and environment because many toxic contaminants that are barely detectable in the water body can accumulate in sediment at much higher levels, the purpose of this study was to make convenient sampling method and optimal treatment of sediment for water quality improvement in reservoir or stream based on an evaluation of degree of contamination. Results for analysis of S-reservoir sediments were observed that copper concentration of almost areas were higher than the regulation of soil pollution (50 mg/1) for the riverbed. S-stream sediments were observed that copper, arsenic and TPH concentration of almost areas were exceeded soil pollution concerning levels for factorial areas. We used Remscreen(version. 1.0) program which is contaminated soil recovery program to select optimal treatment method of contaminant sediments. The result was shown in the order of Thermal Calcination > Excavation, Retrieval and Off-site Disposal(comparative less then contaminant) > Low Temperature Thermal Desorption + Solidification/Stabilization.

In this study, the applicability of calcite, sand, and zeolite for the remediation of sediments contaminated with organics and nutrients were investigated. Sediments and seawater for water tank experiments were sampled from Pyeongtaek harbor, and 1 cm or 3 cm of calcite, sand, and zeolite were capped on the sampled sediments. pH, electric conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were monitored for 63 days. The sampled sediments were highly contaminated with organic matter and total nitrogen. DO in uncapped condition was exhausted within 10 days but DO in capping condition except 3 cm of zeolite capping was prolonged above 2 mg/L. Capping efficiency for interrupting COD release from sediments was in the following order: zeolite 1 cm > calcite 1 cm > calcite 3 cm > sand 3 cm ${\cong}$ zeolite 3 cm ${\cong}$ sand 1 cm. Zeolite was found to be effective for interrupting nitrogen release. T-P was not observed in both uncapped and capped sediment, i.e., all experimental conditions. It can be concluded that zeolite can be effectively used for the remediation of sediments highly contaminated with organic matter and nitrogen.

The sediment removal index derived from the chemical contaminants, $CI_{HC}$, is currently in use to identify and define the spatial extent of the contaminated sediments in the sea. In order to analyze the sensitivity of the ecological and human risk associated with contaminated sediment, we evaluated five hypothetical contaminated sediments, whose $CI_{HC}$ values are identical but consisted of different contaminant contents, using $TrophicTrace^{(R)}$ model dedicated to evaluate sediment risk, against the resident greenling (Hexagrammos otakii) and humans by calculating No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level based Toxicity Quotient (NOAEL TQ) and Lowest-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level based Toxicity Quotient (LOAEL TQ), and cancer risks and hazard indices (HI), respectively, based on the site conceptual model and exposure assumptions of fish ingestion to human receptor populations. NOAEL and LOAEL TQ values varied as much as a factor of 2 among 5 hypothetical sediments. Chemical element specific contribution to the carcinogenic risk and HI varied also greatly in these sediments. The reason for this significant dissimilarity in ecological and human risk stems from the different risk of each contaminant to the resident fish and human receptor. When the conceptual food web model is constructed for the target biological species for a given site, the ecological and human risk analysis considering trophic transfer of contaminants will add a ecosystem based tool for the management of contaminated sediments.
