  • The effects of hull flexibility on shaft alignment are growing as ship sizes are increased mainly for container carrier and LNG carrier. In order to consider hull flexibility on a propulsion shafting system, standardization of ship service conditions is necessary because hull deformation is continuously variable according to ship service conditions. How to summarize ship service conditions is suggested based on practically applicable four viewpoints : hull, engine, loading and sea status. Effects of the external forces acting on a ship propulsion shafting system are generally commented. Several design criteria regulated by classification societies are pointed at issue which seems to have Insufficient technical background. A qualitative verification is carried out to point out the invalidity of the assumption of effective supporting position. In this work, an elastic nonlinear multi-supporting bearing system is introduced as a key concept of the elastic shaft alignment. Hertz contact theory is proved to be more proper one than projected area method in calculation of the nonlinear elastic stiffness of the bearing, The squeezing and oil film pressure calculations in the long journal bearing like an after stern tube bearing are recognized as a necessary process for elastic shaft alignment design.

  • An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In conventional approaches to predicting rail noise, the rail is regarded as placed in a free space so that the reflection from the ground is not included. However, in order to predict rail noise close to the rail, the effect of the ground should be contained in the analysis. In this study the rail noise reflected from the ground is investigated using the wavenumber domain finite element and boundary element methods. First, two rail models, one using rail attached to the rigid ground and one using rail located above rigid ground, are considered and examined to determine the rigid ground effect in terms of the radiation efficiency. From this analysis, it was found that the two models give considerably different results, so that the distance between the rail and the ground is an important factor. Second, an impedance condition was set for the ground and the effect of the ground impedance on the rail noise was evaluated for the two rail models.

  • Interfacial durability and electrical properties of CNT, ITO or xGnP coated PVDF nanocomposites were investigated for acoustic actuator applications. The xGnP coated PVDF nanocomposite exhibited better electrical conductivity than CNT and ITO case due to the unique electrical property of xGnP, and this nanocomposite also showed good sound characteristics. Interfacial adhesion durability between either neat CNT or plasma treated CNT and plasma treated PVDF were measured by static contact angle, surface energy, work of adhesion, and spreading coefficient tests. The optimum acoustic actuation performance of xGnP coated PVDF nanocomposite was measured using sound level meter with changing radius of curvature and coating conditions. As compared to CNT and ITO, the xGnP was known as more appropriate acoustic actuator due to the characteristic electrical property. It is the most appropriate condition when the radius of curvature is 15 degree. Although sound characteristics were different with various coating thicknesses, it is possible to manufacture transparent actuator with good sound quality.

  • Freezing rain is a phenomenon when precipitation falls as a liquid rain drop, but freezes when it comes into contact with surfaces or objects. In this study, we investigated the predictability of freezing rain and its characteristics, which are strongly related with the occurrence of black ice using synoptic scale meteorological observation data. Two different cases occurred at 2012 were analyzed and in the presented cases, freezing rain often occurs in the low-level low pressure with the warm front. The warm front due to the lower cyclone make suitable environment in which snow falling from the upper layer can change into supercooled water. The $0^{\circ}C$ temperature line to generate supercooling water is located at an altitude of 850 hPa in the vertical temperature distribution. And the ground temperature remained below zero, as is commonly known as a condition for black ice formation. It is confirmed that the formation rate of freezing rain is higher when the thickness after 1000-850 hPa is 1290-1310 m and the thickness of 850-700 hPa layer is larger than 1540 m in both cases. It can also be used to predict and estimate the generation of freezing rain by detecting and analyzing bright bands in radar observation.

  • Statement of problem. Various anodic oxidation techniques can be applied to dental implant surfaces. But the condition for optimal anodized surfaces has not been described yet. Purpose. The purpose of this investigation was to compare an implant that was oxidized by another method with $TiUnite^{TM}$ through resonance frequency analysis and histomorphometry. Material and methods. Turned (control), $TiUnite^{TM}$ and another oxidized fixtures, which used $Ca^{2+}$ solution for anodic oxidation, were placed in the tibiae of 5 New Zealand White rabbits. The bone responses were evaluated and compared by consecutive resonance frequency analysis once a week for 6 weeks and histomorphometry after a healing period of 6 weeks. Results. At the first week, both oxidized implants showed significantly higher implant stability quotient (ISQ) values than the control. No significant differences in resonance frequency analysis were found between the two oxidized groups for 6 weeks. The means and standard deviations of bone-to-implant contact (BIC) ratios were $71.0{\pm}4.2$ for $TiUnite^{TM}$, $67.5{\pm}10.3$ for the $Ca^{2+}$-based oxidation fixture, $22.8{\pm}6.5$ for the control. Both oxidized implants were significantly superior in osseointegration to the turned one. There was, however, no statistically significant difference between the two oxidized implants. Conclusion. $TiUnite^{TM}$ and the $Ca^{2+}$-based oxidation fixture showed superior early bone response than the control with respect to resonance frequency analysis and histomorphometry. No significant differences between the oxidized groups, however, were found in this investigation using the rabbit tibia model.

  • In the United States, the prospective payment system(PPS), under which diagnosis related groups (DRGs) are used to reimburse hospitals for the care of Medicare patients since 1983, Study results showed that the PPS is having a major impact on the quantity of services especially of hospital length of stay. The PPS has increased the likelihood that a patient will be discharged home in an unstable condition and the use of nursing homes or long term care facilities increased. Still, it is insufficient to conclude that the PPS has decreased the Medicare total expenditure, but relatively sufficient to conclude that the quality of care hasn't changed. The maintenance of the quality resulted from the systemic "check-and-balance" composed of three factors; (1) The doctors are reimbursed based on the fee-for-service system, (2) hospitals contact with doctors under the attending system, and (3) there are some public hospitals. In Korea, the reimbursement for hospitals and doctors are not divided, the hospitals have doctors as employees, and 90% of hospitals are private. These differences may weaken the "check-and-balance" existing in the U.S. system. And there are few long term care facilities and the diagnostic coding system using in pilot test are not suitable for Korean situation. In conclusion, for successful implementation of the DRG payment system in Korea, the government should establish the "check-and-balance" system in the health sector to make sure the quality of care before the implementation.

  • The frequency of lightning is increased due to improbable weather condition and global wanning. This phenomenon increases economical damage as well as human damage. Advanced countries like europe and north america have applied the facility standard of lightning by accumulating a store of quantitative data about lightning research. Lightning facility is composed of the lightning accepting part for induction lightning, ground connected electrode which conducts lightning current. The lightning accepting part is composed of normal rod, horizontal conductor, ESE lightning rod. Moreover, lightning accepting part is taken to use by the method of protection. This paper suggests HEC(Hybrid ESE-Conductor) method which mixes horizontal conductor and ESE lightning rod. This is also discovered by experiment that the starting point of corona discharge current is low, so it is efficient for lightning protection comparing with other methods. Moreover, distribution of electric field is analyzed qualitatively by finite element method. It also results in the relation of the starting point of corona discharge current. Corona discharge current makes minute current about some ${\mu}A$ between the electrodes by the strength of electric field. Also it occurs insulation destruction of gas, and it is developed to the shape of streamer by increase of the strength of electric field. We can find that the initial occurrence of streamer and contact probability of lightning can have advantage after researching the starting point of corona discharge current and discharge current of lightning striking point. This research demonstrates that the suggested HEC method is economically competitive as a lightning protection facility, and it takes a capably perfect role.

  • Purpose: To examine the effectiveness of various treatments; bifocal spectacles, orthokeratology, atropine, and time spent in outdoors; in slowing down the myopia progression for Asian adolescents (6-18age). Methods: The research focused on examining the most effective treatment in controlling myopia based on the literature sources that have been published. Through meta-analysis of various research papers that already has been done in this field, a lot of data was collected. For each treatment, the difference in axial length and spherical equivalent over time was measured and recorded. To quantitatively record the difference, both axial length and spherical equivalent was determined by value of control group value of treatment group. The paper compared the effectiveness of each treatment based on the data that was measured. Results: Adolescents who chose to spend time outdoors in order to slow down myopia progression had axial length difference of 0.03 mm and spherical equivalent difference of 0.17 D. Adolescents that used atropine had axial length difference of 0.36 mm and spherical equivalent difference of 0.92 D. Bifocal spectacle resulted in axial length difference of 0.21 mm and spherical equivalent difference of 0.59 D, and for orthokeratology 0.23 mm and 0.04 D, respectively. Axial length wise, myopia was most controlled by the atropine since there was a greatest difference between the group that got the treatment and the group that did not have the treatment. According to the spherical equivalent difference data, myopia was most controlled by atropine. Conclusion: Atropine showed the most effective result in controlling myopia among the four treatment. Again, compared to other three treatment, using atropine appeared to have greatest ability in slowing down myopia progression since adolescents who were treated with atropine had greatest difference from adolescents in the control group that had the same condition but didn't get the treatment. However, every treatment was only used for 2 or 3 years which is quite short time period to measure the long term effect of the four treatments. Also, since atropine is a pharmaceutical method to control myopia, it may harm adolescents' eyes compared to optical or environmental treatment.

  • Although there has been no general agreement on the mechanism of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) as one of major degradation modes of Ni-base alloys in pressurized water reactors (PWR's), common postulation derived from previous studies is that the damage to the alloy substrate can be related to mass transport characteristics and/or repair properties of overlaid oxide film. Recently, it was shown that the oxide film structure and PWSCC initiation time as well as crack growth rate were systematically varied as a function of dissolved hydrogen concentration in high temperature water, supporting the postulation. In order to understand how the oxide film composition can vary with water chemistry, this study was conducted to characterize oxide films on Alloy 600 by an in-situ Raman spectroscopy. Based on both experimental and thermodynamic prediction results, Ni/NiO thermodynamic equilibrium condition was defined as a function of electrochemical potential and temperature. The results agree well with Attanasio et al.'s data by contact electrical resistance measurements. The anomalously high PWSCC growth rate consistently observed in the vicinity of Ni/NiO equilibrium is then attributed to weak thermodynamic stability of NiO. Redox-induced phase transition between Ni metal and NiO may undermine the integrity of NiO and enhance presumably the percolation of oxidizing environment through the oxide film, especially along grain boundaries. The redox-induced grain boundary oxide degradation mechanism has been postulated and will be tested by using the in-situ Raman facility.
