An Experimental Study on the Vibration of the PWR Fuel Rod Supported by the Side-sloted Plate Springs (측면 절개된 판형 스프링으로 지지된 경수로 연료봉 진동의 실험적 고찰)

  • One of the methods that are used to compare and verify the supporting performance of the spacer grids developed is the vibration characteristic test. A modal test in this paper is performed for a dummy rod 3,847 mm tall supported by eight New Doublet (ND) spacer grids. For the vibration test in air, nine accelerometers, one displacement sensor and one shaker are used for acquiring signals, and an I-DEAS TDAS software Is employed for analyzing the signals. Also, a finite element (FE) analysis is performed by a beam-spring simple model and a contact model simulating the contact phenomenon between the rod and the ND spring. And then, the results of the modal testing are compared with those of the FE analysis. The natural frequencies as well as the mode shapes obtained by the experiment have a greater similarity to the results by the contact model than the previous beam-spring model. In audition, for grasping whether or not the modal parameters are influenced by where shaking spot is, two kinds of tests are performed : one is for the shaker attached at the fourth span (center), the other is for the shaker at the fifth span that is one span nearer to the bottom of the rod. The latter shows higher MAC than the former Finally, the vibration displacements are measured in the range of 0.l12∼0.214 mm for the excitation force of 0.25∼0.75 N.

Design and Performance Test of the Shoe Holder Spring of the Axial Piston Pump (액셜 피스톤 펌프의 슈 홀드 스프링 설계 및 성능시험)

  • The axial piston pump by which the mechanical energy is converted into hydraulic energy has been widely used in a press, a injection molding machine and construction equipments due to the high specific power compared to the electric power system. In this paper, the one-piece shoe holder spring of the axial piston pump to simplify its structure and reduce this manufacturing cost was designed and tested. The finite element analyses using the 3-D shell element and contact element were performed to determine the thickness, width and initial angle of the shoe holder spring. Also, the compressive tests of the shoe holder spring were performed and their results were compared with those of the finite element analysis. Also, the performance and endurance limit of axial piston pump with the shoe holder spring were tested and evaluated.

Torsional Rigidity of a Two-stage Cycloid Drive (이단 사이클로이드 드라이브의 비틀림 강성)

  • This paper presents a finite element (FE) analysis of the torsional rigidity of a two-stage cycloid drive. The cycloid disk makes contact with a number of pin-rollers simultaneously and eccentric shafts transmit not only torque of the spur gear stage to the cycloid disk, but also that of the cycloid disk to the output disk. Contacts between the disk and pin-rollers are simplified as linear spring elements, and the bearing of eccentric shaft is modeled as a rigid ring that has frictional contact to the disk and an elastic support. FE analysis for an ideal solid cycloid drive was performed and verified by a theoretical calculation. Accurate contact forces were then estimated by iterating between FE analysis for contact forces and Hertz theory calculations for nonlinear contact stiffness. In addition, torsional rigidity of the cycloid drive is analyzed to show that the bearing and nonlinear Hertz contact theory should be considered in analysis and design of a cycloid drive, which was verified with experiments. Finally, the effects of contact stiffness, bearing stiffness and cycloid disk structural stiffness according to the cycloid disk rotation on the torsional rigidity were investigated.

  • In a micro-scale contact, capillary force and van der Waals interaction significantly influence the contact between asperities of rough surfaces. Little is, however, known about the variation of these surface forces as a function of chemical property of the surface (wet angle), relative humidity and deformation of asperities in the real area of contact. A better understanding of these surface forces is of great necessity in order to find a solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro surfaces. The objective of this study is to investigate the surface forces in micro-scale rough surface contact. We proposed an effective method to analyze capillary and van der Waals forces in micro-scale contact. In this method, Winkler spring model was employed to analyze the contact of rough surfaces that were obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) height images. Self-mated contact of DLC(diamond like carbon) coatings was analyzed, as an example, by the proposed model. It was shown that the capillary force was significantly influenced by relative humidity and wet angle of the DLC surface. The deformation of asperities to a critical magnitude by external loading led to a considerable increase of both capillary and van der Waals forces.

  • Water seals are used in a washing machine to seal rotating shafts and to prevent the penetration of dust, dirt or water from the outside. The design parameters of water seals, that were the location of the garter spring, the angle of the seal lip, and the interference, were investigated by the computer simulations using the hyperelastic non-linear large deformation finite element analysis code. The maximum contact stress and the distribution of stress on the seal lip were obtained for various type of water seals. The best type among the several investigated seals was selected considering the contact force and the sealing performance.

  • An optimal design method is adopted for a spacer grid in nuclear power plant. It is made of punched sheet metal process, functioning as springs and dimples supporting fuel rods. For stress analysis of the assembled fuel rod support, a typical cell out of the repeated pattern in the assembly is modeled using 4-node shell elements. A commercial code, ABAQUS, is used for detailed analysis of contacting phenomena with friction. For the optimization, design varibles are taken from geometric parameters representing the shape of the bent leaf spring part and mating contact region with fuel rod. Objective function is considered in relation to mechanical functions and durability. Maximum yon Mises stress is considered in relation to constrained contact stress.

A Numerical Method for Dynamic Analysis of Tracked Vehicles of High Mobility

  • A numerical method is presented for the dynamic analysis of military tracked vehicles of high mobility. To compute the impulsive dynamic contact forces which occur when a vehicle passes on a ground obstacle, the track is modeled as the combination of elastic links interconected by pin joints. The mass of each track link, the elastic elongation of a track link between pin joints by the track tension, and the elastic spring effects on the upper and lower surfaces of each track link have been considered in the equations of motion. And the chassis, torsion bar arms, and road wheels of the vehicle are modeled as the rigid multi bodies connected with kinematic constraints. The contact positions and the contact forces between the road wheels and track, and the ground and the the track are simultaneously computed with the solution of the equations of motions of the vehicle consisting of the multibodies. The iterative scheme for the solution of the multi body dynamics of the tracked vehicle is presented and the numerical simulations are conducted.

  • The nonlinear vibration of the CRT shadow mask is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the shadow mask is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Damping wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the shadow mask. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. The analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires is experimentally verified through impact tests of shadow masks performed in a vacuum chamber. Using the validated analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires, the‘design of experiments’technique is applied to search fur the optimal damping wire configuration so that the vibration attenuation of the shadow mask is maximized.

  • In this study, we developed the simulation program of an overhead catenary-pantograph system, The overhead catenary is modeled with point mass and the pantograph is replaced with 3 d. o. f. model which is composed of mass, spring and damper. Using the developed program, we analyzed the static structure of the overhead catenary and the dynamic characteristics of an overhead catenary-pantograph system such as uplift displacement of contact wire and contact force. we compared the analysis results with the results of GASENDO software developed at RTRI in Japan. The behaviors of uplift displacement of contact wire and contact force were similar with the results of GASENDO software.
