In this paper an anthropomorphic robot hand called SKKU Hand IIl is presented, which has a miniaturized fingertip tactile sensor. The thumb is designed as one part of the palm and multiplies the mobility of the palm. The fingertip tactile sensor, based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and pressure variable resistor ink, is physically flexible enough to be deformed into any three-dimensional geometry. In order to detect incipient slip, a PVDF strip is arranged along the direction normal to the surface of the finger of the robot hand. Also, a thin flexible sensor to sense the static force as well as the contact location is fabricated into an arrayed type using pressure variable resistor ink. The driving circuits and the tactile sensing systems for the SKKU Hand II are embedded in the hand. Each driving circuit communicates with others using CAN protocol. SKKU Hand II is manufactured and its feasibility is validated through preliminary experiments.

Clothing pressure has close relation with clothing comfort and depends on the pattern and properties of textile fabrics. Choosing a suitable clothing pressure is an essential factor for designing functional clothing such as the foundation for reshaping of a body contour or medical items for bum patient, and etc. However, it is hard to measure pressure values at the curved surface of a human body correctly. Recently, an air pack type pressure sensor, which has relatively excellent performance has been used to measure clothing pressure, however, it is still inconvenient to apply because it is a contact- type sensor. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest an indirect method that can measure clothing pressure without touching the subject by improving the equation of Kirk and Ibrahim (1966). However, confusions have been occurred when someone use the equation since the definition of parameters are somewhat vague. Furthermore, the estimated clothing pressure obtained by the previous method are quite different from the real values because this method does not consider the 3D effect of a human body and property changes of a transformed fabric. In this paper, the direction of principal stress and the radius of curvature in the principal direction were searched in the 3D image of the deformed girdle to get more accurate clothing pressure. The estimated clothing pressure was verified by comparing the result of the air pack type pressure sensor. It was found that the accuracy of the pressure estimation was improved by considering the 3D curvature of human body and the directional characteristics of textile fabrics.

Purpose: This research investigated falls due to obstacles that occur among elderly people by assessing changes in the values of plantar foot force, peak force, and plantar foot pressure in elderly subjects while they were stepping over obstacles of different heights. Methods: The subjects were 20 elderly people aged 70-80 years; Pressure was measured on flat ground(0 cm), and after installing obstacles of 8 cm and 12 cm using the F-scan system, which is a resistance-type pressure sensor. A one-way analysis of variance was performed to compare pressure on each part of the foot according to various heights after collecting data using the Tekscan program. The least significant difference test was used for the post-hoc analysis, A p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The force value for the toe area (parts 1, and 2) and contact pressure increased significantly with the 12 cm obstacle (p<0.05). The peak force value and the peak contact pressure for part 1 increased significantly with the 12 cm obstacle (p<0.05). Conclusion: Larger changes appeared in the functions and structure of the foot while subjects walked over obstacles of different heights compared to flatland walking. This result suggests that people have safety strategies to prevent falls, and that there is a need for a more realistic approach through practice to overcome obstacles of various heights to prevent falls.
We spend about 40% of lifte time on a bed and seek how such amount of time is spent comfort. Bed comfort has been pursuited. The pressure distributions on a bed by body pressure has been considered as one of the most important factors of bed comfort. This study is to quantify the subjective assessment by the body pressure distribution and develop the objective evaluation method of bed comfort. A new measurement system for body pressure on a bed was developed in this study. The thin film pressure sensor (FSR: Force Sensing Resistor) of an elastomer-type was used to prevent the distortion of contact pressure. The pressure distribution is measured by FSR and displayed on the monitor by color-coded contour patterns. Some of the bed test results were described. And the relations between body pressure distribution and bed comfort were evaluated.
A superhydrophobic mesh is a unique structure that blocks water, while allowing gases, sound waves, and energy to pass through the holes in the mesh. This mesh is used in various devices, such as gas- and energy-permeable waterproof membranes for underwater sensors and electronic devices. However, it is difficult to fabricate micro- and nano-structures on three-dimensional surfaces, such as the cylindrical surface of a wire mesh. In this research, we successfully produced a superhydrophobic water-repellent mesh with a high contact angle (> $150^{\circ}$) for nanofibrous structures. Conducting polymer (CP) composite nanofibers were evenly coated on a stainless steel mesh surface, to create a superhydrophobic mesh with a pore size of $100{\mu}m$. The nanofiber structure could be controlled by the deposition time. As the deposition time increased, a high-density, hierarchical nanofiber structure was deposited on the mesh. The mesh surface was then coated with Teflon, to reduce the surface energy. The fabricated mesh had a static water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$, and a water-pressure resistance of 1.92 kPa.

This paper presents an in-process measurement system for shaft radius measurement during grinding process. This system does not require to stop the grinding process, which can enhance productivity and quality. In order to measure the radius, the system employs an eddy current sensor that can measure without any contact with the shaft. This type of sensor is very appropriate because it is insensitive to interference such as cutting fluid, coolant, contact pressure, and wear. For data analysis, the measurement system is modeled as a linearized discrete form where the states with noise are estimated by an extended Kalman filter. This system has been validated through simulations and experiments.
Pressure distributions of the soft tissue are valuable for understanding and diagnosing the disease characteristics due to the mechanical loading. Our system measures dynamic pressure distributions in real-time under the general PC environment, and analyzes various foot disorders. Main features of the developed system are as follows: (1) With the resistive pressure sensor matrix of 40${\times}$40 cells, the data is sent to the PC with the maximum sampling rate of 40 frames/sec. (2) For each frame, contact area, pressure and force are analyzed by graphic forms. Thus, various biomechanical parameters are easily determined at specific areas of interests. (3) A certain stance phase can be chosen for the analysis from the continuous walking, and the detailed biomechanical analysis can be done according to an arbitrary line dividing anterior/posterior or medial/lateral plantar areas. (4) The center of pressure (COP) is calculated and traced from the pressure distribution data, and thus the movement of the COP is monitored in detail. A few experiments revealed that our system successfully measured the dynamic plantar distribution during normal walking.
Even though the blood pressure is one of the most widely used index for the healthcare monitoring of hypertensive and normotensive persons, there is no non-intrusive measurement method which is commercialized until now. Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) is known that it has close relation with the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and arterial stiffness. In this study, SBP estimation methods by non-intrusive measurement of PAT are suggested. For the unconstrained measurement of PAT, the first method used the electrically non contact electrocardiogram (ENC-ECG) technique and the reflective type of Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor on the computer mouse. In the second method, ENC-ECG and the air pressure sensor in the seat cushion on a chair were measured. The third method used ECG electrodes and PPG sensors on the toilet seat cover. The validation and regression analysis of the relationship of PAT and SBP are summarized. These methods have considerable errors to be used for all people. But these can be applied for each subject after the parameter customization within acceptable error. So, it is feasible for suggested methods to be used for monitoring of SBP in daily life in non-intrusive way when there is personal identification system of each subject.
We investigate how the frequency and the Fourier amplitude of the pulse wave behave as the contact pressure of the sensor on the skin increases. The results are that the fundamental frequency of the pulse wave hardly changes and the Fourier amplitude has several different patterns depending on the personal constitution, and its patterns are classified. We also show that the classified patterns can be related to the different pulse types by the magnitude of the pressure required to reach the maximum Fourier amplitude and the range of the pressure at which the maximum Fourier amplitude is maintained.
Pulse feeling is one of the most important diagnosis method in Oriental medicine. But it is not easy to make an objective and standardized diagnosis. In this study, we found how to quantify diagnosis. Specially dally the high practicality in clinic, we search some parameters especially well-related to floating and sinking pulse by statistic analysis. By extension, we find the pulse patterns of the floating and sinking pulse. We choose 15 subjects diagnosed as floating pulse and 15 subjects diagnosed as sinking pulse by oriental doctors. And their pulse signals were acquired by Pulse analyzer which has piezoresistive pressure sensor. For the quantification of the floating and sinking pulse, at first, we examined the parameters which were highly correlated with oriental doctor's diagnosis. And then we derived pulse patterns of the floating-sinking pulse from preprocessed signal and its ensemble average. We also looked trend variation (PH-Curve) between contact and pulse pressure. As a result, statistically there is the biggest difference between contact pressure, the maximum pulse pressure, diastolic area (Ad) and floating and sinking data. Through the PH-Curve, which represented the relationship between contact and pulse pressure, we could divide the floating and sinking pulse clearly. As a basic research of pulse diagnosis algorithm, we can contribute to select essential parameters in diagnosis algorithm And using these diagnosis method, we expect to find typical pulse patterns and some useful parameters about other pulses like slow/rapid, large/fine pulse and so on. We hope that this study will contribute pulse objectification.
