The ultrasonic nonlinear parameter ${\beta}$ is generally known as an effective parameter for evaluating material degradation. Thus far, most research has been conducted using a contact method. However, since measurement by this contact method is affected by the contact conditions between the transducer and the specimen, additional devices are required to maintain the contact conditions stable during the measurement. To avoid this inconvenience, this paper proposes a noncontact method. In this study, only the receiver was replaced with a noncontact receiver, and then, the ultrasonic nonlinear parameters measured by the newly developed noncontact receiver were compared with those measured by the contact receiver. Results obtained using both these receivers for heat-treated aluminum alloy specimens showed good agreement. From this result, we can confirm that the ultrasonic nonlinear parameter ${\beta}$ can be measured using the proposed noncontact ultrasonic method.

The noncontact optical sensor using the hologram laser and automatic power controller is developed to measure a thickness of transparent objects and achieve excellent performance. Due to the contact between the tip of the sensor and the surface of objects, the tip is abraded. In addition the casting glass under high temperature results in extending the size of sensor body. The accuracy of the sensor is degraded due to these reasons. In this paper, to overcome these problems, we proposed a low cost non-contact optical sensor that is composed of a hologram laser unit used for optical pickup of CD player and a plastic lens. Therefore the problems caused by the contact sensor are solved by using the noncontact sensor. The noncontact sensor has to move toward the objects and obtain the focus error signal to measure a position of transparent objects. While the internal temperature of the sensor is controlled under ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}$, many trials shows ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ measurement error as excellent performance.
This paper deals with the non contact optical sensor to measure the shape of transparent plates such as glass panel of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display). The conventional methods to obtain the shape or thickness of a transparent plates are contact type sensor such as LVOT(Linear Variable Differential Transformer). Due to the contact between the tip of the sensor and the surface of objects, the tip is abraded. In addition, the high temperature glass casting makes the size of sensor body changed. These reasons makes the sensor degraded. In this paper, to overcome these problem, we proposed a low cost noncontact optical sensor this is composed of the Hologram laser unit of a CD-Pickup and a plastic lens. To evaluate the performance of the proposed optical sensor, a series of experiments were performed for various measurement condition. Based upon observation of the experimental result, the developed sensor shows good result for measuring the shape of transparent plates.
Noncontact electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement using capacitive-coupled technique is a very reliable long-term noninvasive health-care remote monitoring system. It can be used continuously without interrupting the daily activities of the user and is one of the most promising developments in health-care technology. However, ECG signal is a very small electric signal. A robust system is needed to separate the clean ECG signal from noise in the measurement environment. Noise may come from many sources around the system, for example, bad contact between the sensor and body, common-mode electrical noise, movement artifacts, and triboelectric effect. Thus, in this paper, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is applied to denoise a real-time ECG signal in capacitive-coupled sensors. The ECG signal becomes highly stable and noise-free by combining the common analog signal processing and the digital EKF in the processing step. Furthermore, to achieve ubiquitous monitoring, android-based application is developed to process the heart rate in a realtime ECG measurement.

Ultrasonic guided waves are gaining increasing attention for the inspection of platelike and rodlike structures. At the same time, inspection methods that do not require contact with the test piece are being developed for advanced applications. This paper capitalizes on recent advances in the areas of guided wave ultrasonics and noncontact ultrasonics to demonstrate a superior method for the nondestructive detection of thinning defects simulating hidden corrosion in thin aluminum plates. The proposed approach uses EMAT(electro-magnetic acoustic transducer) for the noncontact generation and detection of guided plate waves. Interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes are used for the detection of plate thinning. It is shown that mode cutoff measurements provide a qualitative detection of thinning defects. Measurement of the mode group velocity can be also used to quantify of thinning depth.

Many researches on measurement technology has been made and developed by various methods. Considering the measurement environment with cutting fluid, coolant and the like, contact type measurement methods are mostly used. But contact measurement method has measuring force and so the sensing head becomes worn. By these reasons, we considered sensors not influenced by the former fluid and so can acquire accrate measured values using error compensation due to temperature and vibration. For this purpose, eddy current sensors and Extended kalman Filter Algorithm for processing measured data has been used. In this paper, we present new technology that can be used for measuring workpiece with previous bad environment using direct method and comparison measurement method. We used cylindrical workpieces which were produced by grinding machine for the target.

This paper is proposed non-contact plant growth measurement system using infrared sensor based on USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technologies. The proposed system has used noncontact sensors to reduce any potential damage when it measures the growth of the plant. In this system, plant growth parameters such as diameter, cross-sectional area and thickening form are measured in real-time non-contact method. The measured data are transmitted to remote server by using sensor network technologies, stored and analyzed at the server, and the analyzed data are finally provided for users. In this paper, the proposed plant growth measurement system has been designed and implemented using non-contact infrared sensor based measurement methods and devices, and its performances have been verified by actual measurement experiments at the fields.
In this paper, a new, simple capacitive tilt sensor with a metallic ball is proposed. The proposed tilt sensor has only two electrodes and a metallic ball, and this design assists in managing the inherent contact problem in measuring tilt angles. Capacitive sensing, compared with other types of tilt sensor, has many advantages such as simplicity, noncontact measurement, long-throw linear displacement, and sub-micron plate spacing. Its design and fabrication process are significantly simpler than previous types of tilt sensors. The dimensions of the prototype tilt sensor are $20mm{\times}20mm$, and the diameter of the polystyrene tube is 5 mm with a tube thickness of 0.15 mm. An analytical study of the prototype capacitive tilt sensor was undertaken, and the experimental results demonstrate the relationship between the tilt angles and measured capacitances compared with the analytical study.

This paper deals with the method of vibration measurement of a gun barrel structure using mechanical filter. When a bullet with high speed is moving within a gun barrel type structure with low bending vibration frequencies, it is difficult to measure the bending vibration signals of the structure. For example, noncontact type sensors such as displacement or velocity sensor are not appropriate for the measurement of vibrational signals because of the movement effect of the equipment frame through the moving structures or effect of the ground vibration. One of contact type sensors such as accelerometer is profitable for measurement of vibrational signals because of its wide measurement ranges. In the case of a gun barrel structure including high vibrational signals like shock waves, however, it is necessary to propose vibration measurement method filtering high frequencies. The purpose of the paper is to propose the proper vibrational measurement technique filtering high frequencies of a gun barrel type structure.

Currently the plates used for the various structures has a tendency to being slim to the degree of the sheet metal vis-a-vis the overall measurements of the structure, and the conditions of their usage and load have been getting diverse. As the structure material has been used more and more under the various conditions, the necessity of the strength analysis is to be required. While most of these methods are simply based on the strain gaging method; that is, directly attaching most of the material to the gage, using the non-contact method is still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. Therefore, this dissertation is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics of the TIG welded zone which is used with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system.
