Drinking behaviors by stress level in Korean university students

  • The purposes of this study are to estimate the stress level of university students, and to verify the relationships between stress level and drinking behavior. A questionnaire survey was administered to 430 university students in the Gangwon area in Korea from November 5 to November 28, 2008, and data from 391 students were used for the final statistical analysis. The most stressful factor was "Worry about academic achievements" (2.86 by Likert-type 4 point scale). The subjects were divided into two groups, a low stress group (${\leq}65.0$) and a high stress group (${\geq}66.0$), by the mean value (65.1) and median value (66.0) of the stress levels. The drinking frequency was not different between the two stress groups, but the amount of alcohol consumption was significantly different ($P$ < 0.05). The portion of students reporting drinking "7 glasses or over" was higher in the lower stress group than in the higher stress group. In addition, factor 6, "Lack of learning ability", was negatively correlated with drinking frequency and the amount of alcohol consumption ($P$ < 0.05), and factor 3, "Worry about academic achievements", was negatively correlated with the amount of drinking ($P$ < 0.05). The major motive for drinking was "When overjoyed or there is something to celebrate" (2.62), and the main expected effect of drinking was "Drinking enables me to get together with people and shape my sociability" (2.73). The higher stress group showed significantly higher scores on several items in the categories of motives ($P$ < 0.01), negative experience ($P$ < 0.05), and expected effects ($P$ < 0.05) of drinking than the lower stress group. Our results imply that university students at the lower stress level may drink more from social motives in positive drinking environments, while those at the higher stress level may have more problematic-drinking despite their smaller amount of alcohol consumption.

여대생의 HDL-콜레스테롤 수준에 따른 임상건강지표와 영양섭취 실태 (Food Intake Patterns and Blood Clinical Indices in Female College Students by HDL-cholesterol Levels)

  • Recently, a lot of epidemiological studies revealed that low HDL-cholesterol level was a better predictor of risk for coronary heart disease than total cholesterol. This study investigated the anthropometric parameters, clinical blood indices, and dietary factors influencing serum HDL-cholesterol level by using a cross-sectional study for Korean female college students. The subjects were 94 female college students. They were divided into three groups according to their serum HDL-cholesterol levels, low HDL-cholesterol (<50 mg/dL, n=20), medium HDL-cholesterol (50 $\leq$, < 60 mg/dL, n=39) high serum HDL-cholesterol groups (60 $\leq$ mg/dL, n = 35). This study examined their demographic data and dietary intake throughout a questionnaire. Clinical blood indices were measured using an automatic blood chemistry analyzer (Selectra E), after 12 hours of fasting. BMI, body weight, fat mass, and waist circumferences were significantly increased according to low serum HDL-cholesterol levels. Serum lipid analysis showed a significantly higher level of TG, LDL-/HDL-Ratio, atherogenic index in the low HDL-cholesterol group. Serum levels of GPT, uric acid and alkaline phosphatase in the low HDL-cholesterol group were significantly higher than in the other group. The average consumption of energy was 1627 kcal and 77.76% of estimated energy requirement (EER). The mean ratio of calories from carbohydrate: protein: fat was 57:15:28. The low HDL-cholesterol group was significantly higher than the other groups in eggs, fat and oils consumption. Interestingly, milk and diary products consumption of low HDL-cholesterol group was half (p < 0.05) of those of the other groups. In conclusion, serum HDL-cholesterol levels appeared to be decreased by increasing BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, and serum TG level. In addition, some dietary factors seemed to be related to serum HDL-cholesterol levels. However, further research is needed to elucidate the exact relationship between serum HDL-cholesterol level and dietary factors.

A Study of Health-Related Habit and Hematological Index of Male Workers Residing in Ulsan City

  • This study was conducted by surveying 616 male workers living in Ulsan City regarding their health status based on lifestyles such as alcohol consumption, smoking and exercising as well as physical measurements and biochemical tests. The average height, weight and BMI(body mass index, $kg/m^2$) of the subjects was 170.9cm, 70.2kg and 24.2, respectively. The rate of drinking was $80.9\%$ and the rate of smoking was $53.4\%$. Seventy four percent of subjects responded that they exercise regularly. The results of the blood biochemical tests revealed that the average hemoglobin concentration was 14.7g/dl, and the levels of GPT(glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) were 32.74unit/l, 26.99 unit/l, respectively. The average hemoglobin concentration for the subjects aged in the 50s was 14.39g/dl, which was significantly lower than those in the 20s(14.81g/dl), 30s(14.69g/dl) and 40s(14.73g/dl). The blood glucose level and the cholesterol level also increased with age. Also investigated was the blood pressure of the subjects increased with age,. and there was a significant increase(p < 0.05) for the subjects in the 50s compared to those in the 20s. The frequency of alcoholic beverages was significantly correlated with systolic/ diastolic blood pressure(p < 0.05) and $\gamma-GTP(gamma\;glutamyl\; transpeptidase)$(p<0.01). The duration of smoking showed a negative correlation(p < 0.05) with the hemoglobin and positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol and $\gamma-GTP(p<0.01)$. The study shows that blood pressure, blood glucose level, cholesterol level, GOT, GPT and $\gamma­GTP$ level, increase with age, which indicates higher possibility of degenerative diseases, calling for nutritional education in terms of advisable lifestyles regarding eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking and regular exercise.

한국인의 시리얼 섭취실태와 우유 및 칼슘섭취와의 관련성 연구 - 2001년도 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여 - (Ready-to-eat Cereal Consumption Enhances Milk and Calcium Intake in Korean Population from 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish an association between the consumption of ready-to-eat cereal (RTEC), milk, and calcium within the context of the most current population dietary practice in Korea. Inadequate calcium intake among Korean children and adults is one of the important public health concern. Milk is one of the best calcium sources because or its bioavailability, and RTEC is one or the foods commonly consumed with milk. The most recent Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey, 2001 dataset was used as the source of data for this research. Subjects excluding pregnant women, were categorized according to gender and age ($1{\sim}5,\;6{\sim}11,\;12{\sim}19,\;20{\sim}49,\;50+$ years) and then by consumption of RTEC and milk. SAS and SUDAAN were used for statistical analyses. Sample weighted means, standard errors, and population percentages were calculated, and multiple regression model with adjustment for covariates were used to determine the predictability of total daily calcium intake from inclusion of RTEC and milk compared to the meal without RTEC and milk. RTEC was consumed by 2.4% or Korean people. Average calcium intake was 17 times greater when RTEC was consumed with milk than when RTEC was consumed without milk. Respondents who consumed RTEC with milk had significantly higher mean daily calcium and other nutrient intakes than respondents who consumed neither. in the multiple regression analysis, milk consumption with or without RTEC predicted total daily calcium intake after adjusting for age, income, and alcohol consumption (p<0.0001). The percentage of respondents below the estimated average requirement (EAR) level for calcium was lower for RTEC consumers than for RTEC non-consumers in all age-gender groups, especially significant differences were in children aged $1{\sim}5$, boys and girls aged $12{\sim}19$, men aged $20{\sim}49$, and women older than 50 years of age. RTEC consumption was not associated with intake in excess of the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for calcium. In conclusion, RTEC consumption was positively associated with both milk and calcium intakes in all age and gender groups in Korean population.

Community-Based Health Education and Communication Model Development for Opisthorchiasis Prevention in a High Risk Area, Khon Kaen Province, Thailand

  • Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a community-based health education and communication programme on reducing liver fluke infections caused by the consumption of uncooked fish among people in a high-risk area of Thailand. Materials and Methods: The study was quasi-experimental in nature, with three-stages. Stage 1 involved a situational and capacity analysis of designated communities in Khon Kaen province. This was followed by the development of a model for community-based health education and communication to prevent liver fluke infections among high-risk people, and, lastly, implementation and evaluation of the model were performed. Data were collected using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In total, 390 people were surveyed, and quasi-experimental and comparison groups, each with 90 people, were assessed between May 2011 and April 2012. Analysis was using statistical OR, 95 % CI, the Willcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test, the chi-square test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The findings showed that most respondents had a high level of knowledge and understanding of liver fluke disease (89.5%, 95% CI:86.0-92.4), and positive attitudes toward the prevention of the disease (94.4%, 95% CI:91.6-96.4). However, with regard to changes in consumption of uncooked fish, most respondents were still in the pre-contemplation phase (55.1%, 95% CI:50.0-60.1), followed by the contemplation phase, 22.6%. Furthermore, four factors were found to be associated with the consumption of uncooked fish - the consumption of alcohol (OR 4.16, 95% CI:1.79-9.65), gender (OR 3.17, 95% CI:1.53-6.54), smoking (OR 3.03, 95% CI:1.31-7.05), and age 40 years and above (OR 2.68, 95% CI:1.02-7.05). After nine months of the health education and communication programme using local media based on local wisdom, culture and persons, the results showed that, compared to the control group, members of the experimental group had a higher level of knowledge, a better attitude and lower levels of ill-advised consumption behaviour. Also, it was found that consumption of uncooked fish, by an assessment of the level of stage of change, was reduced. (p-value 0.002). Conclusions: The health education and communication programme developed as part of the study was effective in changing the consumption of uncooked fish. Therefore, this approach should be promoted in other high-risk areas in Thailand in the future.

서울지역 중.고등학생의 환경친화적 의복 소비행동 (The Environmental-Friendly Clothing Consumption Behavior of Middle and High School Students in Seoul)

  • 본 연구는 청소년의 환경친화적 의복 소비행동에 영향을 미치는 변수들을 파악하여, 환경친화적 의복 구매, 사용, 처분행동을 유도하기 위한 교육적 자료를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년의 환경활동 경험은 보통 이상이며, 환경활동 경험 중 환경문제에 대한 교육을 받은 경험이 가장 낮게 나타났다. 둘째, 환경친화적 가치관 중 환경보전 가치관이 가장 높게, 이타주의 가치관이 가장 낮게 나타났다. 셋째, 의복을 통하여 개성을 추구하고자 하는 욕구가 가장 크고 다음으로 편안함과 가격을 추구했으며, 유행과 브랜드를 추구하는 성향은 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 환경친화적 의복 소비의식 중 처분의식은 보통 이상이나 구매의식과 환경문제 인식은 보통 이하로 낮게 나타났다. 특히 의복이 유발하는 환경문제에 대한 인식이 가장 낮은 점을 감안해 의복의 생산과 소비과정에서의 환경오염과 이를 예방할 수 있는 방안에 대한 교육이 필요하다. 다섯째, 환경친화적으로 의복을 소비하는 행동은 전체적으로 낮게 나타났다. 하위요인 중 사용과 처분 행동은 어느 정도 실행되나 구매 행동은 환경친화적으로 이루어지지 못하고 있었다. 이는 그동안의 환경교육이 주로 자원 절약과 재활용 등 사용 및 처분행동에 초점을 맞추어 진행되었기 때문으로 생각되며, 따라서 앞으로는 소비의 시작인 의복의 구매단계에서 환경친화적인 소비행동을 할 수 있도록 교육해야 할 것이다. 여섯째, 청소년의 환경친화적 의복 소비행동에 영향을 미치는 변수 중 가격 추구 성향과 의복 처분의식은 의복 구매 사용 처분의 모든 의복 소비행동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

두개의 제어기를 사용한 건물 내부의 온도변화와 에너지소비량을 계산하기 위한 해석적 연구 (A study on the analytical method for calculating the inside air temperature transient and energy consumption load of the building using two different controllers)

  • Four different buildings having various wall construction are analyzed for the effect of wall mass on the thermal performance and inside building air and wall temperature transient and also for calculating the energy consumption load. This analytical study was motivated by the experimental work of Burch et al. An analytical solution of one-dimensional, linear, partial differential equations is obtained using the Laplace transform method, Bromwich and modified Bromwich contour method. A simple dynamic model using steady state analysis as simplified methods is developed and results of energy consumption loads are compared with results obtained using the analytical solution. Typical Meteorological Year data are processed to yield hourly average monthly values. This study is conducted using weather data from two different locations in Korea: Daegu having severe weather in summer and winter and Jeju having mild weather almost all year round. There is a significant wall mass effect on the thermal performance of a building in mild weather condition. Buildings of heavyweight construction with insulation show the highest comfort level in mild weather condition. A proportional controller provides the higher comfort level in comparison with buildings using on-off controller. The steady state analysis gives an accurate estimate of energy load for all types of construction. Finally, it appears that both mass and wall insulation are important factors in the thermal performance of buildings, but their relative merits should be decided in each building by a strict analysis of the building layout, weather conditions and site condition.

대전지역 대학생의 식품섭취빈도에 영향을 미치는 요인 연구 (Study on the Factors Influencing Food Consumption by Food Frequency Qustionnaire of University Students in Taejon)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the foods which 424(male 171, female 253) university students surveyed consumed frequently and to evaluate and the factors affecting their food consumption patterns. The survey was conducted at the beginning of nutrition courses each semester, March and September, 1998, with the questionnaire composed of general information, food, drinking and smoking habits, nutrition knowledge/attitude and food frequency questionnaire. The rates of alcohol drinking in male and female students were 89.2% and 78.1% respectively, and the rates of smoking were 68.1% and 1.6% in males and female. The nutrition knowledge score was higher in females than in males, but the nutrition attitude score was not significantly different between the male and female groups. The foods frequently consumed among students were cooked rice(14.3/week), kimchi(11.1/week), coffee(5.7/week), vegetables in soup, jjigae and jorim(3.5/week), carbonated beverages(3.3/week), cooked mixed rice(3.2/week). Ramyun and chocolate·candies·biscuits were frequently consumed, too. There were several factors influencing food consumption patterns. These were gender, regularity of mealtimes, the status of alcohol drinking and smoking, residence type and the levels of nutrition knowledge and attitude. Males ate more frequently cooked rice, coffee, carbonated beverages, ramyun, functional beverages and ham·sausage, while females ate more frequently cooked mixed rice and fruits. Those who had the habits of irregular mealtimes seemed to eat more soft drinks, instant foods and snacks. These trends were also found in the alcohol drinking and smoking groups. High level groups for nutrition knowledge of attitude score chose raw yellow green and green vegetables, cooked mixed rice, soybeans and seaweeds more frequently than the other groups. On the other hand, low level groups for nutrition knowledge or attitude score were apt to eat carbonated beverages and ramyun more frequently. Therefore, more attention should be taken to males, having habits of irregular mealtimes, alcohol drinking and smoking, and low level groups for nutrition knowledge or attitude score so as to improve their health.

가미계격탕 주정추출물의 안전성에 대한 연구 (Study on the Safety of Kamikaekyuk-tang Ethanol Extract)

  • Kamikaekyuk-tang(KMKKT), a formula of ten Oriental herbs, was orientally designed to promote vital energy, to remove blood stasis, and to decrease inflammation for treating cancers. KMKKT and its component had potent antiandrogen and androgen receptor activities in prostate cancer and also inhibited angiogenesis induced by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and suppressed the tumor growth in LLC-bearing mice, and liver metastasis of colon 26-L5 cancer cells, suggesting a potent cancer preventive agent. Nevertheless, there is no safety study of KMKKT before clinical trial so far. Thus, in the current study, we investigated the toxicity about ethanol-extracted KMKKT. Male and female Spraque Dawley (SD) rats were given orally by KMKKT at 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Mortality, clinical signs and measured change of body weight, food consumption and water consumption were observed. In addition, we performed ophthalmologic, urinary, hematological, blood serum biochemical and histopathological examination. Any general toxicity was not found in KMKKT treated group. Also, there were no significant differences in the parameters such as body weight, food consumption and water consumption, a lot of urine and blood factor levels except WBC, MCHC and Ca level compared with control group. Although WBC and MCHC were elevated in female rats and Ca level was decreased in male rats, these were within normal ranges. Finally, we determined that maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was 1000 mg/kg and no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) was 500 mg/kg. Taken together, these results demonstrated that KMKKT is very safe to SD rats.

포장도로의 거칠기 변화에 대한 차량 연료소모량 변화율 (The Change Rate of Fuel Consumption for Different IRI of Paved Roads)

  • 높은 차량운행비용(VOC : Vehicle Operating Cost)은 포장도로 복구작업의 주요한 원인이고, 차량운행비용(VOC)은 연료소모량, 오일소모량, 부품교체비용 등으로 구성된다. 이중 연료소모량이 VOC에서 차지하는 비중이 높고, 다른 도로조건에 비해 도로 표면 거칠기가 도로의 노화 정도를 대표적으로 지시하는 값이기 때문에, 본 연구에서는 포장도로의 표면 거칠기(IRI : International Roughness Index) 변화에 따른 차량의 연료소모량 변화를 측정하였다. 차량의 연료분사 인젝터의 전압변화를 측정하여 연료소모량을 계산하였고, 속도는 GPS센서를 사용하여 측정하였다. 본 실험 결과를 이용하여 IRI 변화에 대한 연료소모량의 변화율을 계산할 수 있었다. 계산 결과, 40~100km/h 속도영역에서 중형 및 대형 승용차의 연료소모량(L/100km)은 3.5m/km 정도의 IRI 수준에서 IRI(m/lm) 증가율의 7배 정도로 증가하였고, 60km/h의 속도에서 가장 연비가 우수하였다.
