Industry 4.0 & Construction H&S: Comparative Perceptions

  • Historical construction health and safety (H&S) challenges, in terms of a range of resources and issues, continue to be experienced, namely design process-related hazards are encountered on site, workers are unaware of the hazards and risks related to the construction process and its activities, activities are commenced on site without adequate hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRAs), difficulty is experienced in terms of real time monitoring of construction-related activities, workers handle heavy materials, plant, and equipment, and ultimately the experience of injuries. Given the abovementioned, and the advent of Industry 4.0, a quantitative study, which entailed the completion of a self-administered questionnaire online, was conducted among registered professional (Pr) and candidate Construction H&S Agents, to determine the potential of Industry 4.0 to contribute to resolving the challenges cited. The findings indicate that Industry 4.0 technologies such as augmented reality (AR), drone technology, virtual reality (VR), VR based H&S training, and wearable technology /sensors have the potential to resolve the cited H&S challenges as experienced in construction. Conclusions include that Industry 4.0 technologies can finally address the persistent H&S challenges experienced in construction. Recommendations include: employer associations, professional associations, and statutory councils should raise the level of awareness relative to the potential implementation of Industry 4.0 relative to H&S in construction; case studies should be documented and shared; tertiary construction management education programmes should integrate Industry 4.0 into all possible modules, especially H&S-related modules, and continuing professional development (CPD) H&S should address Industry 4.0.

Job Training and Safety Education for Modular Construction using Virtual Reality

  • This study investigates the virtual reality (VR) simulation to train construction workers for modular construction. Recently, the construction industry has been experiencing a growing demand for modular construction due to a shortage of labors and an increasing social need for safety. While the demand for modular construction has been increasing, construction labors suffer a basic knowledge regarding modular construction. The users of the simulation, developed by Unity program and Oculus Quest 2, experience the removal of hazardous elements at the location whether the modular unit suspended by a crane is lowered, the lowering and assembly of units through crane operation, and the fall from the roof which is the most frequent accidents in modular construction. The simulation was tested by 15 subjects. The effectiveness of the education was measured through a survey on self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, usability, and presence. It was found that the VR training is suitable for educating on the modular construction activities and safety issues related to them. This study also found that perceived usefulness is the factor that has the greatest impact on self-efficacy. This study can contribute to resolving the labor education issues for the deployment of modular construction.

  • 증강현실(Augmented Reality, AR) 기술은 현실 환경을 기반으로 컴퓨터에서 생성한 가상의 객체정보를 중첩해봄으로써 가상현실 상에서 느낄 수 없는 실감형 모델을 구현하는 기술이다. 본 연구에서는 토목공사 철근배근 작업에 증강현실 기술을 적용하는 방법론과 시스템 시제품을 구성하여 철근공사 작업의 증강현실 적용성을 검증하고 있다. 토목공사 현장의 여러 작업들 중에서 철근공사는 절차화된 매뉴얼방식보다는 숙련공의 경험적 방식에 의해 작업이 진행되는 대표적 공정이다. 이러한 공정에 증강현실을 적용하면 당초 계획도면과 비교하여 누락된 철근배근 및 상이한 배근 상태를 시각화하여 계측할 수 있으므로 시공성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 구축된 시스템은 3차원으로 모델링 된 철근객체를 실제 시공현장에 중첩하여 시각화함으로써 철근 조립공정들의 작업 이해도를 높이고, 검측단계에 활용함으로써 철근조립작업에서 발생할 수 있는 하자와 재작업으로 인한 비용증가를 억제할 수 있을 것이라 기대된다.

  • Excavators are versatile earthmoving equipment that are used in civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, grading and landscaping, pipeline construction and mining. Effective operator training is essential to ensure safe and efficient operating of the machine. The virtual reality excavator based on simulation using conventional large size monitors is limited by the inability to provide a realistic real world training experience. We proposed a flexible observation method with a head tracking system to improve user feeling and sensation when operating a virtual reality excavator. First, an excavation simulator is designed by combining an excavator SimMechanics model and the virtual world. Second, a head mounted display (HMD) device is presented to replace the cumbersome large screens. Moreover, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor is mounted to the HMD for tracking the movement of the operator's head. These signals consequently change the virtual viewpoint of the virtual reality excavator. Simulation results were used to analyze the performance of the proposed system.

  • Recently, virtual reality technologies have been rapidly developed and realtime virtual simulation methods have been extensively employed for several application areas such as game, sports, manufacturing, military, and so on. A 3D database in realtime virtual simulation plays a key role because it makes users feel reality in virtual space. In a application view of 3D database, a systematic construction approach is required to reduce its construction time and increase its quality. However, many researches have been mostly focused on realtime graphic issues and its key technologies. In virtual simulation of transportation equipments, this paper proposes a systematic construction process of 3D database consisting of four stages as follows: 1) determine the activity space of a equipment, 2) collect data related to 3D database construction, 3) make a 3-dimensional modeling strategy, and 4) generate and evaluate a 3D model. This paper also introduces a new procedure of 3D environment modeling, which summarizes and expands our modeling experiences, to be used as a modeling guide.

  • Recently, a growing number of accidents have taken place at construction sites, causing serious casualties. To prevent accidents or minimize damage, it is necessary to develop the safety precautions education is essential. However, the effects of safety education do not have as much effect as the importance of safety education. so As a new direction, we are looking forward to effective education by simulating realistic environments using VR. The safety training method used to experience and learn dynamic situations in a limited room wearing HMD is combined with VR. It will be the start of the construction industry going forward.

웹 기반의 건축설계 사이트 개발의 방향 제시 (Direction Presentation of Development of Web-Based Architectural Design Site)

  • 일반인이 리모델링 및 인테리어 공사를 하고자 할 때, 건축 재료 및 설계에 대한 지식부족으로 원하는 디자인의 방향을 잘 표현하지 못하거나, 디자인의 결과를 미리 예측하지 못하여 본인의 의도와 다르게 시공되는 등 여러 가지 문제가 발생하게 된다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 인터넷 상에서 건축설계 및 재료에 대한 지식을 공유하고, 자신이 원하는 디자인을 가상의 공간안에 미리 설계해 봄으로써, 실제 시공 시 결과를 예측할 수 있도록 도와주는 일반인들을 위한 건축설계 가상체험 사이트를 개발하고자 하는 목적을 가지고 연구되었다. 연구방법으로는 현재 건축분야에서 활용하고 있는 가상현실 기술의 사례조사를 통하여 건축설계에 있어서 구현가능한 가상현실 기술의 한계 및 그 방향을 도출하고, 실제 전문가들이 사용하고 있는 건축 설계 프로그램의 사례분석을 바탕으로 건축설계 시 요구되는 필수기능을 UI로 구성하고자 하였다. 그 결과 웹기반의 건축설계 가상체험 사이트의 설계 방향을 서비스적인 측면과 기술적인 측면, UI적인 측면으로 나누어 제안하고자 한다.

웨어러블 AR 기기를 이용한 객체인식 기반의 건설 현장 정보 시각화 구현 (Augmented Reality Framework to Visualize Information about Construction Resources Based on Object Detection)

  • The augmented reality (AR) has recently became an attractive technology in construction industry, which can play a critical role in realizing smart construction concepts. The AR has a great potential to help construction workers access digitalized information about design and construction more flexibly and efficiently. Though several AR applications have been introduced for on-site made to enhance on-site and off-site tasks, few are utilized in actual construction fields. This paper proposes a new AR framework that provides on-site managers with an opportunity to easily access the information about construction resources such as workers and equipment. The framework records videos with the camera installed on a wearable AR device and streams the video in a server equipped with high-performance processors, which runs an object detection algorithm on the streamed video in real time. The detection results are sent back to the AR device so that menu buttons are visualized on the detected objects in the user's view. A user is allowed to access the information about a worker or equipment appeared in one's view, by touching the menu button visualized on the resource. This paper details implementing parts of the framework, which requires the data transmission between the AR device and the server. It also discusses thoroughly about accompanied issues and the feasibility of the proposed framework.

가상현실 기반 건설안전교육이 건설근로자의 학습효과에 미치는 영향 - CAMIL 이론을 활용하여 - (Effect of virtual reality-based construction safety education on the learning performance of construction workers - Using CAMIL theory -)

  • 건설 산업에서 발생하는 안전사고는 전체 산업 중 가장 높은 비율을 차지하고 있으며, 이를 해결하기 위한 방안으로서, 건설업 기초안전·보건교육 제도에 가상현실(Virtual Reality; VR) 기반 체험형 교육방식의 도입을 장려하고 있다. 하지만, VR 기반 건설안전교육을 수행하기 위한 컨텐츠 및 기자재 인프라 미흡, 전문인력 부족 등의 한계로 인해, 사진기반 VR 컨텐츠를 시청하는 방법(간접교육방식)이 주를 이루고 있다. 본 연구에서는, CG기반 VR 컨텐츠를 체험하는 방법(직접교육방식, 유형 B)과 기존의 VR 시청교육(간접교육방식, 유형 A) 간의 학습효과 차이를 분석하였으며, CAMIL (Cognitive & Affective Model of Immersive Learning) 기반의 객관적인 평가도구를 활용하였다. 본 연구에서 수행한 t-test(평균차이 분석) 결과에 따르면, CAMIL 이론에 따른 4단계의 모든 영역에 있어서, VR 시청교육(간접교육방식) 대비하여 VR 체험교육(직접교육방식)의 학습효과가 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해서, VR 기반 건설안전교육의 올바른 방법(시청교육이 아닌 체험교육)을 제시할 수 있었으며, VR 체험교육의 확대를 통해 건설근로자의 안전교육 학습효과를 개선할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
