High-performance of Flexible Supercapacitor Cable Based on Microwave-activated 3D Porous Graphene/Carbon Thread (마이크로웨이브 활성화 3차원 다공성 그래핀/탄소실 기반의 고성능 플렉서블 슈퍼커패시터 케이블)

  • We report a supercapacitor cable, which consists of three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene coated onto the surface of carbon thread. The 3D porous framework of graphene was constructed by microwave-activated process using a graphene oxide-coated carbon thread. The use of microwave irradiation enabled to convert graphene oxide into reduced graphene oxide without any reducing agents and activate graphene sheets into exfoliated and porous graphene sheets. Combining two wire electrodes with a polymer gel electrolyte successfully completed supercapacitor device in a form of cable construction. The supercapacitor cables were highly flexible, and thus can be transformed into various shapes of devices and be integrated into textile items. A high area-capacitance of 38.1 mF/cm was obtained at a scan rate of 10 mV/s. This capacitance was retained 88% of its original value at 500 mV/s. The cycle life was also demonstrated by repeating a charge/discharge process during 10,000 cycles even under bent states, showing a high capacitance retention of 96.5%.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present improvement measures for enhancing practicality through case analysis of Inner and Outer-Temporary Housing. Method: First, the basic functions and types of Temporary Housing, were discussed through prior research analysis. Second, a practicality problem was derived by analyzing cases of Temporary Housing. Third, improvement measures were proposed to ensure the practicality of Temporary Housing based on the problems identified. Results: Factors such as habitability, economics, construct ability and operation methods that should ultimately be improved in Temporary Housing, and these elements were divided into production, transportation, construction, and storage according to the life cycle, suggesting matters to be improved in order to improve practicality at each stage. Conclusion: The proposed improvements are considered to help develop inner and outer-temporary housing.

Development of an Economic Assessment Model for the Selection of Indoor Air Pollutant Low Emission Material for G-SEED (G-SEED용 실내공기 오염물질 저방출 자재 선정을 위한 경제성 평가 모델 개발)

  • The Korean construction industry has been implementing G-SEED, a certification system that evaluates the environmental properties of buildings for the purpose of reducing environmental burdens such as energy and resource consumption and pollutant emissions. Also, creating a pleasant environment in general is one more purpose of G-SEED certification system. However, G-SEED certification in practice is difficult and time consuming due to the complexity of the certification acquisition process coupled with little economic consideration for the materials of each certification item. Therefore, in this study, we present a model for the optimal selection of materials and economic assessment using a genetic algorithm. The development of the model involves building a material database based on life-cycle costing (LCC) targeted at "Application of Indoor Air Pollutant Low Emission Material" from G-SEED. Next, the model was validated using a real non-residential building case study. The result shows an average cost reduction rate of 74.5 % compared with the existing cost. This model is expected to be used as an economically efficient tool in G-SEED.

A Study on Information Collection and Idea Creation Using Drones (드론을 활용한 정보수집 및 아이디어 창출에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of Value Engineering (VE) is to derive the optimal value at the most efficient life cycle cost, comprising three stages: Pre-Study, Study, and Post-Study. In this study, we propose a method for information collection and analysis during planned site visit surveys in the preparation stage of VE. The 3D spatial model, created using a drone, facilitated observation and analysis of the study area from various angles, both from the center and the outside. Additionally, through the utilization of drones, we conducted on-site investigations of the research area's 3D spatial model, enabling a macroscopic perspective previously only feasible through a microscopic viewpoint during planned site visits in the pre-study phase. Furthermore, the utilization of actual spatial data obtained from observations allowed for real-time information verification during Design VE workshops, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the VE project.

  • This study investigates the thermal conductivity and density of expanded polystyrene insulation materials collected from buildings under going energy retrofit projects. Due to the absence of initial thermal conductivity data, determining precise long-term patterns was challenging. Analysis based on design documents revealed that expanded polystyrene insulation maintained consistent performance over ten years. Notably, the thermal conductivity measurements of insulation samples of the same grade and age varied significantly. Additionally, the insulation density was found to be substantially below the standard specified in the design documents. The results of the experiment indicate that performance management during both construction and operation phases is lacking. It is crucial to apply building commissioning, which involves performance verification throughout the building's life cycle, to properly evaluate building energy performance improvements, such as building energy retrofit projects.

Light Conditions for Suitable Growth of Urban Interior Plants - In Case of Green House within Kyobo Building, Seoul - (도심 실내조경 식물의 적절한 생육에 필요한 광조건 - 서울시 광화문 교보생명빌딩 그린하우스를 대상으로 -)

  • This study has attempted to calculate the intensity of illumination for the optimal growth environment of indoor plants after analyzing both damage to plant species and growth conditions as impacted by light conditions for the Kyobo Life Insurance greenhouse. The optical intensity of illumination has been estimated after investigating the problems of growth conditions based on an analysis of illumination by light condition, dead tree replacement cycle(weeks) and rate of damage of plant species. According to the investigation of illumination, the lowest difference was observed between the shaded spot in the south(531lux) and the sunny spot(602lux) while the largest difference(nearly 500lux) was detected between the shaded spot in the central area(210lux) and the sunny spot(782lux). According to an analysis of dead trees from 1990 to 2004, in terms of dead tree replacement cycle, Viburnum awabuki was the highest(161weeks), followed by Phyllostachys spp.(84weeks), Camellia japonica and Ternstroemia japonica(40weeks). Regardless of plant species, damage rate of plant were lower in the shaded spot and higher in the sunny spot. According to correlation and regression analyses with the intensity of illumination as an independent variable and the damage rate of plant species as a dependent variable, the damage rate of plant species increased as the intensity of illumination decreased. A dramatic decline in the rate of damage was observed at $500{\sim}600lux$. At 700lux, it reached the lowest level.

Comparison Analysis of Environmental Performance between Reconstruction and Remodeling Alternatives for Aged - Focused on CO2 Emissions Analysis - (공동주택 재건축과 리모델링의 친환경성 비교분석 - CO2 배출량 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • Environmental problems and the shortage of natural resources are currently gathering more attention in Korea and international countries. With these problems, it is reported that most current domestic buildings are emitting approximately 138 million tons of greenhouse gas. According to a recent report from the investigation of Korean housing population, the total number of households is approximately 12.9 millions, and the apartments that were built more than 15 years ago amounted to 3.1 millions. This shows that the rates of old apartment housings are increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the deteriorated facilities and environmental improvement. Also, the construction industry is benefited by improving these housings which may need either remodeling or reconstruction. Environmental friendly buildings are a rising consideration for remodeling and reconstruction projects; it helps to determine many business matters in construction. The main purpose of this research is to improve environmental condition in apartments with comparison analysis between remodeling and reconstruction alternatives. This research is focused on characteristics of remodeling and reconstruction and it sets up the same condition with each level in order to evaluate the value of environmental friendliness and analyze its definition. The result of this research provides a unique emitting rate at a novel framework and this will cause the reduction of $CO_2$. It is analyzed that the remodeling construction can reduce the great amount of $CO_2$. Therefore, it will be a good decision guideline in selecting the most eco-friendly alternative to improve environment for building construction. Although reconstruction is a popular alternative nowadays in Korea, this research can provide a reason why decision makers should put more emphasis on remodeling as an environment-friendly alternative.

Technical Standards and Safety Review of the Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility (중.저준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설에 대한 기술기준 및 안전심사)

  • On July 31, 2008, the Government issued the construction and operation permit for the first low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal facility in the Republic of Korea. In this paper, the fundamental regulatory framework, regulatory requirements and technical standards of the disposal facility are introduced, and the phased review process adopted for evaluation of the safety of the facility is briefly described. The Atomic Energy Act sets forth a stepwise regulatory framework for the whole life-cycle of the disposal facility such as siting, design, construction, operation, closure and institutional control. More detailed regulatory requirements and technical standards are stipulated in the subsequent regulations of the Atomic Energy Act and a series of Notices issued by the Ministry of Eduction, Science and Technology. The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, as entrusted by the Ministry under the Atomic Energy Act, conducted safety review on the disposal facility, and evaluated the compliance with relevant criteria in all technical elements(i.e. siting and structural safety, radiological environmental impact, operational safety, systems and components, quality assurance, and total systematic performance assessment, etc.). The overall safety review process can be phased into inception phase, initial review phase, main review phase and completion phase. The review results were reported to and deliberated by the five Sub-committees of the Special Committee on Nuclear Safety, and then reported to the Ministry. The Ministry issued the construction and operation permit of the disposal facility through the deliberation of the review results by the Nuclear Safety Commission. Hereafter, the safety of the repository will be reassured by a series of subsequent regulatory inspections and reviews under the Atomic Energy Act. In addition, the licensee's continuous implementation of the "Safety Promotion Plan" may also enhance the long-term safety of the repository and contribute to build-up the confidence of the safety case.

  • This paper proposes a design verification method based on system dynamics for offshore separation systems. Oil and gas separation systems are key components of offshore oil platforms; these systems determine the competitiveness of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, especially in terms of added value. However, previous research on design verification has been limited to the process and deliverables of design. To address this, the study aims to develop a comprehensive design verification method and the associated functions from the perspective of project management, for the entire project life-cycle of offshore structures. The proposed methodology for design verification is expected to contribute toward effective and detailed designs as well as improve the competitiveness of EPC companies in constructing of shore structures during the early design stages. We first analyzed the separation system of the FPSO using the design verification method adopted by advanced countries and compared it with the system dynamics process formalized as ISO 15288. Subsequently, a tailored process for the design verification of the offshore structure was derived. It is shown that the proposed design verification method can be applied to the front-end engineering design process of of shore structures. Moreover, it can contribute toward the successful performance of offshore projects in the future and also minimize design changes and critical risks during the construction of these offshore structures.

A Study for BIM based Evaluation and Process for Architectural Design Competition -Case Study of Domestic and International BIM-based Competition (BIM기반의 건축설계경기 평가 및 절차에 관한 연구 -국내외 BIM기반 건축설계경기 사례를 기반으로-)

  • In the AEC(Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry, BIM(Building Information Modeling) technology not only helps design intent efficiently, but also realizes an object-oriented design including building's life cycle information. Thus it can manage all data created in each building stage and the roles of BIM are greatly expanded. Contractors and designers have been trying to adopt BIM to design competitions and validate it for the best result in various aspects. Via the computational simulation which differs from the existing process, effective evaluation can be done. For this process, a modeling guideline for each kind of BIM tool and a validation system for the confidential assessment are required. This paper explains a new process about design evaluation methods and process using BIM technologies which follow the new paradigm in construction industry through complement points by an example of a competition activity of the Korea Power Exchange(KPX) headquarter office. In conclusion, this paper provides a basic data input guideline based on open BIM for automatic assessment and interoperability between different BIM systems and suggests a practical usage of the rule-based Model Checker.
