  • The miraculous growth of Korean economy and its business corporations during 1960' s and 1970's are mainly due to the government leadership and its market intervention. We can find the reasons why the government initiated economic growth plan was so successful in Korea in its efficient bureaucratic government system and fair discipline to the corporations based on its contribution to the economy. During 1960's, the primary factors for the growth of business entities and the formation of business groups were the financial special favor, the preferential treatment in the new industry entrance and the merge & acquisition, lavish export incentives from the government, and the export explosion to Vietnam. During 1970's, the substantial deduction of corporations' private debt, enormous support in heavy industry investment, special benefits to general trading companies by the government, and the construction export to the Middle-East were the main causes of the business growth and the business groups formation. Also, the economic rent for the big companies had still been effective since 1960's. However, the preferential benefit to the big companies made them to diversify into the unrelated business ares and to be in very vulnerable financial position. The governmental support brought about the monopoly as well.

  • Strategic alliance between corporations is essential to build a CALS system. Specially, companies cooperate one another to accomplish the shared environment in the system. During the construction of the CALS system, we can apply the concepts of ILS and SCM to develop the breadth and depth of shared environment between firms. In order to build such intended environment in the CALS system, we propose five dimensions with 30 variables to be considered. These dimensions are Information Sharing, Task Sharing, System Sharing, Parts and Facilities Sharing, and Institution Sharing. Structured interviews were peformed to measure the degree of shared environment designed in 7 CALS pilot systems in Korea. The results show that the level of the shared environment in the context of vertical relationships between firms in the CALS systems is fairly high. In contrast, the level of the sharing between competing companies in horizontal relationships is relatively low in most of the pilot systems.

There have been many researches related to EUC success factors, however, as the researches have been concentrated on limited type of business areas or have been studied without distinguishing the differences of characteristics of business areas, these researches are not sufficient to cover the situation of the corporations, in general. In this research, the range of companies to be investigated was widely extended to such as electric and electronic company, banking, construction company, petroleum and chemistry company, machinery and metal company, and beverage and food company. EUC success factors which influence the factors that are used to evaluate the EUC performance for each business area were found to be different. The result of this research can be useful for a company which is seeking EUC success factors for its own business area.

  • This paper suggests a contingent perspective for analyzing information systems issues of the Korean firms. The contingent perspective includes such corporate characteristics as industry, organizational size, strategy, and value-added application function. This research surveyed 119 corporations in manufacturing, banking, distribution, and construction industries. Among those samples 104 data of corporate IS managers turned out to be statistically valid. As a result, those issues are ranked as the most urgent and important IS issues: strategic IS planning, system integration, application of database, process standardization, and network planning and implementation. Furthermore, factor analysis says that thirty issues to be surveyed are to be grouped into seven factors such as IS planning, user/education, database, applications of IT, system management, distributed computing technology, and network applications. It also found through Pearson correlation and ANOVA that organizational characteristics highly influences the IS issues the corporations face.

  • With the enormous growth of the Internet, an increasing number of people in corporations use the Internet for communicating with the outside world, for gathering information, and for doing business. Internet technology may have its greatest impact not on general culture, but rather on corporations. It has already begun to revolutionize the way that companies operate and do business. When Internet technology is applied and used inside a corporation, and open only to its employees, it is referred to as an Intranet. The same technologies that underlie corporate Intranets form the basis of the larger Internet. The benefit of Intranet is 1) low construction cost 2) easy system management 3) friendly user interface 4) OS and H/W independent, etc. This paper provides the concept of Internet and Intranet, compares client/server and Intranet environment, and propose case study of implementation from client/server to Intranet environment.

  • During the financial crisis in the late 1990s, we witnessed the large corporations failing at one moment. It is clear that the debt-dependant size augmentation and duplicate investment, and the failure in fund liquidity adjustment were the greatest causes rather than the long-term strategic advantage. Such fact, however, has led to the introduction of advanced financial techniques and security/management of fund liquidity. In order to propose a method to secure fund liquidity at the construction level, this study considers the documentational/precedent studies on project financing among fund procurement methods. And the fund liquidity status at construction level is investigated domestically/internationally to analyze the fund flow. Finally, the actual data is used to analyze progress rate and sales rate to end with the proposal of the method to secure fund liquidity in the progression of this study.
