  • In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, it was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.

  • The ELD computation has been based upon the so-called B-coefficient which uses a quadratic approximation of system loss as a function of generation output. Direct derivation of system loss sensitivity based on the Jacobian-based method was developed in early 1970s', which could eliminate the dependence upon the approximate loss formula. However, both the B-coefficient and the Jacobian-based method require a complicated Procedure for calculating the system loss sensitivity included in the constraints of the optimization problem. In this paper, an ELD formulation in which only the bus power equations are defined as the constraints has been introduced. Derivation of the partial derivatives of the system loss with respect to the generator output and calculation of the penalty factors for individual generators are not required anymore in proposed method. A comprehensive solution procedure including calculation of the Jacobians and Hessians of the formulation has been presented in detail. Proposed ELD formulation has been tested on a sample system and the simulation indicated a satisfactory result.

  • This paper presents a technique that can obtain an optimal solution for the Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) problems using the Interior Point Method (IPM) while taking into account of the power flow constraints. The SCED equations are formulated by using only the real power flow equations from the optimal power flow. Then an algorithm is presented that can linearize the SCED equations based on the relationships among generation real power outputs, loads, and transmission losses to obtain the optimal solutions by applying the linear programming (LP) technique. The objective function of the proposed linearization algorithm are formulated based on the fuel cost functions of the power plants. The power balance equations utilize the Incremental Transmission Loss Factor (ITLF) corresponding to the incremental generation outputs and the line constraints equations are linearized based on the Generalized Generation Distribution Factor (GGDF). Finally, the application of the Primal Interior Point Method (PIPM) for solving the optimization problem based on the proposed linearized objective function is presented. The results are compared with the Simplex Method and the promising results ard obtained.

  • In this paper, we performed the implementation of image transmission server system using embedded system that is for the specified object and easy to install at any places and move to wherever. Since the embedded system has lower capability than PC, we have to reduce the quantity of calculation and transmission. The image compression like JPEG, needs that the server calculates for making compressed image, makes the server carry the load. So we compresses the image at the server and transmit the codes to the clients connected, then the received codes from server are decoded and displayed at the clients. In this process to make the image compression and transmission effectively, we decrease the procedure as simple as possible to transmit the data in almost real-time. We used the Redhat linux 9.0 OS at the host PC and the target board based on embedded linux. The image sequences are obtained from the camera attached to the FPGA board with ALTERA chip. For effectiveness and avoiding some constraints, we made the device driver. Generally the image transmission server is PC, but using the embedded system as a server makes the server portable and cheaper than the system based on PC.

  • The recent increase in use of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for wireless connectivity in personal area networks makes of it an important technology for low-cost low-power wireless personal area networks. Studies showed that voice communications over IEEE 802.15.4 networks is feasible by Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) allocation; but there are some constraints to accommodate voice transmission beyond two hops due to the excessive transmission delay. In this paper, we propose a GTS allocation scheme for bidirectional voice traffic in IEEE 802.15.4 multihop networks with the goal of achieving fairness and optimization of resource allocation. The proposed scheme uses a greedy algorithm to allocate GTSs to devices for successful completion of voice transmission with efficient use of bandwidth while considering closest devices with another factor for starvation avoidance. We analyze and validate the proposed scheme in terms of fairness and resource optimization through numeral analysis.

  • A robust economic dispatch algorithm involving transmission losses is proposed and investigated for a possibility of on-line applications. In this paper, the penalty factors are calculated directly from transposed Jacobian of load flow analysis with advantages of superiority to B-coefficients method based on its computation time and suitability for real time application since the approach is based on a current system condition. The proposed algorithm is systematically handling the generation capacity constraints with transmission losses. Implementation of the algorithm for IEEE systems and EPRI Scenario systems shows that computation time is enough to apply on-line economic dispatch to large power system and production cost is saved compared with the crude classical economic dispatch algorithm without considering transmission losses.

  • In this paper, a preventive transmission rate decision algorithm, called PTRD, is proposed for the transmission of live video over networks with dynamic bandwidth allocation capability. Frame analyzer predicts the bit-rates of future frames before encoding by analyzing the source information such as spatial variances and the degree of scene changes. By using the predicted bit-rates, transmission rate bounds are derived from the constraints of encoder and decoder buffers. To resolve the problem of renegotiation cost increment due to frequent renegotiations, the PTRD algorithm is presented to decide transmission rates considering the elapsed time after the recent renegotiation and the perceived video quality. From the simulation results, compared to the normalized LMS based method, PTRD is shown to achieve high channel utilization with low renegotiation cost and no delay violation.

  • This paper deals with an optimal design methodology for an automatic transmission lever using a genetic algorithm. A component of an automatic transmission lever has been designed sequentially in the industry, but the study presents a new design method to consider the design parameters of components simultaneously. A genetic algorithm approach is described to determine a set of design parameters for an automatic transmission lever. We have attempted to model the design problem with the objective of minimizing the angle variation of detent spring subject to constraints such as modulus of elasticity of steel, geometry of shift pipe. and stiffness of spring. The proposed method can give the better design alternative.

  • In this paper, we study the problem of designing the power and number of cooperative node (CN) in the cooperation phase to maximize the average throughput for secondary user (SU), under the constraint of the total cooperation and transmission power. We first investigate the scheme of cooperative spectrum sensing without a separated control channel. Then, we prove that there indeed exist an optimal CN power when the number of CNs is fixed and an optimal CN number when CN power is fixed. The case without the constraints of the power and number of CN is also studied. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the characteristics and existences of optimal CN power and number. Meanwhile, Monte Carlo simulation results match to the theoretical results well.
