1. Objectives The objective of this study was to measure the differences of EEG changes accoring to emotional stimulus in Sasangin. 2. Methods 44 healthy volunteers(Soyangin 10, Soeumin 14, Taeumin 20) were participated. Sasang Constitution was diagnosed by Sasang specialist. Volunteers watched horror movie as the emotional stimulus. We recorded EEG data during pre-stimulus rest(120sec), during-stimulus(197sec), rest-stimulus(120sec). Power spectral analysis was done and relitive power and ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ ratio were compared among each groups. 3. Results (1) The mean of relative ${\alpha}$ of Taeumin was significantly decreased according to stimulus compared with Soyagnin. (2) Relative ${\alpha}$ of Soeumin was significantly decreased in T3 area according to stimulus compared with Taeumin. (3) Relative ${\beta}$ of Taeumin group was significantly increased in Fp2 area according to stimulus compared with Soeumin. 4) Relative $high-{\beta}$ of Soyangin group was significantly decreased in F3 by the post-stimulus rest compared with Soeumin. (5) ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ ratio of Soeumin was significantly increased according to stimulus compared with other groups. 4. Conclusions Soyangin showed sensitive changes according to the emotional simulus compared with Soeumin and Taeumin. Above results suggest that the emotional characteristics of Sasangin can be measured by objective methods as by EEG.
Purpose In Sasang Constitution Medicine, persons are divided into four types such as Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin and Soeumin according to their appearance, moral nature and characteristic of constitutional symptoms. In teenager group, diagnosis of constitution based on their appearance was so difficult that we adopted new diagnostic method which measures and compares body compositions. Methods 180 middle school students who live in Pusan were studied from 20th of March, 1999 to 20th of March, 2000. After practicing Questionnaire(I), QSCC(Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution) I , QSCCII, we have measured the height and body compositions with Inbody 3.0, five times. Results 1. The results of Sasang Constitution analysis showed 91 students were classified as Taeumin(50.3%), 75 as Soyangin(41.4%), 14 as Soeumin(7.7%), and 1 as Taeyangin(0.6%). 2. The level of total body water, muscle area, BMR(Basal Metabolic Rate), BCM(Body Cell Mass), and AMC(Arm Muscle Circumference) were increased during spring and summer. That of body weight, fat body weight, fat body weight ratio, waist hip ratio, and BMI(Body Mass Index were increased during fall and winter. 3. In Taeumin and Soyangin groups, the changed capacity of total body water, muscle area and BMR were increased with statistical significance. 4. Waist hip ratio of Soeumin group was reduced more than those of Taeumin, Soyangin groups with statistical significance.
Objectives We observed what effects both ratio of inhalation and exhalation(I/E) and posture have on heart rate variability(HRV) according to Sasang Constitution(SC).Methods HRV of 73 healthy participants who filled in self-questionnaires was recorded while they carried out 0.1Hz paced breathing(PB) with sitting, usual breathing(UB) with standing, and 0.1Hz PB with standing. PB was conducted to 4:6 or 6:4 of I/E and UB with sitting was executed before and after each breathing. Finally, HRV indices were analyzed of 60 participants(Soeum: 24, Soyang: 18, Taeeum: 18).Results & Conclusions In both self-questionnaires and HRV indices, there are not statistically significant between SC about the posture and I/E. SOEUM preferred 4:6 of I/E and showed lower mean RR and SDNN. SOYANG preferred 6:4 of I/E and showed higher mean RR and lower mean heart rate. TAEUM did not prefer I/E and showed the highest SDNN.
To study clinical characteristics of patients complained of the tremor, I analyzed a database of twenty four patients managed at the Sasang Constitutional Department in Wonkwang University Oriental Medical Hospiyal from June 1999 to October 2000. 54% of patients who had adequate follow-up were improved with herb medication, electric acupuncture, physical therapy, aromatherapy. 46% of them were not improved in spite of above mentioned treatment. None of patients was aggravated. 71 % of them have male sex and 42% in 7th decade. The distribution ratio was 46% Soyang Constitution, 42% Taeumin Constitution, 13% Soum Constitution. I diagnosed 75% of them as essential tremor or physiological tremor or neurosis. Most of them had the tremor in upper extremities. The period of history were various distribution. This study was conducted for the purpose of finding out an objective classification method for Sasang Constitutional medicine, which divides people into 4 groups of constitution and presents comprehensively physiology, pathology, diagnosis, therapy and recuperation regarding each constitution. Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification(I) was administered to 328 inpatients at Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Hospital. Data was collected during 10 months from June 1994 to Mar. 11, 1995. For the purposes of this study, the collected data was analyzed by crosstabs, variation analysis, and discrimination analysis. The analyzing program was SPSS PC+V4.0. There was significant differences of each group scales through variation analysis. The questions of each group had Sasang constitutional diagnostic discrimination abilities 2. The diagnostic discrimination abilities(Hit-ratio=56.10%) of the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) were found to have over 20% improvement than the propotional chance criteria(33.3%), Especially, Hit-ratio for $So{\breve{u}}m$-In(63%) was higher than that of SoYang-In(55%) and $Ta{\breve{e}}um$-In(56.3%). 3. Through discrimination analysis on good questions of each group, the diagnostic discrimination abilities of the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) was 57.93%. 4. This would be on the ground that the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) could be used as a tool for Sasang constitution classification.
Objectives To study on the relation between Sasang constitution and obesity and that of obese patient's clinical symptom. Methods The subjects were 129 female patients to visit to diet. The subjects were 129 female patients to diet who answered questionnaire QSCC II and were diagnosed by the Sasang constitution from May to December in 2001 at Nara oriental medical clinic. Results 1. Of obese patients 79.1% were Taeumin, 11.6% Soeumin, and 9.3% Soyangin. 2. A relation of a grade of obesity and Sasang constitution. 2-1) 45.8% of the obese patients were high level obesity who had over 35% of body fat. Out of these people, 91.5% were Taeumin. 2-2) 40.3% of the obese patients weight hip ratio was between 0.84 to 0.89 and 84.6% of these people were proved to be Taeumin. 2-3) 39.2% of the people who had a minimum weight hip ratio of 0.90 were significantly Taeumin, 6.7% Soeumin and 16.6% Soyangin. 2-4) 65.7% of Taeumin were obese patients. 3. Obesity treatment with constitution. 3-1) 59.8% of Taeumin were Pyo-zng patients. 3-2) As treatment periods tended to increase, Taeumin and Soeumin patients showed a large decling of body fat, whereas Soeumin patients showed the opposite reaction. 3-3) The weight hip ratio was led by Taeumin with 0.03 and then came Soeumin and Soyangin with a 0.02 ratio. As treatment was taken into process longer Taeumin patients showed a great progress in decreasing their weight hip ratios. 4. Costitutional related symptom with Obesity. 4-1) Taeumin was followed by Soyangin and then Soeumin in family history. 4-2) Soeumin was followed by Taeumin, then Soyangin when complain of physical fatigue was taken into consideration. 4-3) The ordinary exercise was led by Soyangin, Taeumin then Soeumin. 4-4) People who receive stress turned out to be 72.9% much higher than the people who don't. 4-5) Overeating due to stress was found in 83.3% of Soyangin.
Objective : To learn the distributional characteristics of Sasang constitutions, Methods : We statistically analyzed those 1338 patients who had been treated at Iksan Wonkwang Oriental Medicine during the period of three years from 2000 to 2002. The data were obtained through the electronic chart developed by Kim Jong- Yeol, and analyzed using the statistical Package SPSS. Results : The distributional ratio of Soeumin : Soyangin : Taeumin was 22.8 : 29.2 : 47.8. Thus the hypothesis : 'the distributional ratio of Soeumin : Soyangin : Taeumin is 2 : 3 : 5' was barely rejected by $x^2$ test for goodness-of-fit at the significance level of 5 %. When $x^2$ test for homogeneity was applied, the distributional characteristics between women and men were different and the distributional characteristics among several age groups were different under significance level of 5%. Conclusion : Though the hypothesis: 'the distributional ratio of Soeumin : Soyangin : Taeumin is 2 : 3 : 5' was rejected by $x^2$ test at the significance level of 5%, the observed distributional ratio was not so far away from the hypothesis.
Objective: Tumor necrosis factor-a $(TNF-{\alpha})$, a potent immuno-modulator and pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been implicated in many pathological processes. In this study, the author examined whether promoter region polymorphism in the $TNF-{\alpha}$a gene at position-308 affect the odds of cerebral infarction (CI) and whether genetic risk is enhanced by sasang constitutional classification. Methods: 212 CI patients and 610 healthy controls were genotyped and determined according to sasang constitutional classification. The amplified genotypes were analyzed on $8\%$ polyacrylamide gel. The alleles were visualized by ethidium bromide staining. Primers for $TNF-{\alpha}$ were designed to incorporate a polymorphic site at a position -308 bp of the $TNF-{\alpha}$ gene into an NcoI restriction site. Restriction digests generated products of 87 and 20 bp for G allele and 107 bp for A allele. Results : A significant decrease was found for the $TNF-{\alpha}$ A allele in CI patients compared with controls (P=0.033, odds ratio, O.R.: 0.622). However, there was no significant association between $TNF-{\alpha}$ polymorphism and sasang constitution in CI patients. Conclusion: My finding suggests that $TNF-{\alpha}$promoter region polymorphism is responsible for susceptibility to CI in Koreans.
Objective This study investigated the effects of Jeoreongchajeonja-tang in a high-fat diet-induced obesity mouse model. Methods The study examined 9-week-old male mice (C57bl/6J) divided into four groups: the normal(C57bl/6J-Nr), control (high-fat diet only; HFD-CTL), positive-control (high-fat diet with Garcinia cambogia), and experimental (high-fat diet with Jeoreongchajeonja-tang; HFD-JCT) groups. After 7 weeks, the body weight, food efficiency ratio, organ weight, and visceral fat weight of the mice were measured. Blood serum tests, mRNA, liver histopathology, and epididymis adipocytes were also examined. Results Compared with the Control(HFD-CTL) group, the Experimental(HFD-JCT) group given Jeoreongchajeonja-tang showed significant reductions in absolute body weight and food efficiency ratio. The serum alanine aminotransferase, total-cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, insulin-like growth factor-1, and leptin levels were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. The serum adiponectin levels were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significant reductions in absolute abdominal subcutaneous fat, epididymal adipose tissue, kidney adipose tissue, intestine adipose tissue, and liver, kidney and spleen adipose tissue weights. The C/EBP-${\beta}$, leptin, and SREBP1c/ADD1 mRNA expression were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group, while the UCP-2 and adiponectin mRNA expression were significantly higher. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed a significant reduction in the absolute adipocyte area in the liver and epididymal adipose tissue. Conclusion Jeoreongchajeonja-tang has an anti-obesity effect. Additional clinical studies are expected.
Objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the related factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods The subjects were 187 persons diagnosed as fatty liver by abdominal ultrasonography. They were divided into three groups according to the severity of fatty liver: control, mild, moderate or severe. The three groups' general characteristics, laboratory results, liver function indexes, metabolic syndrome indexes, tumor markers, heart rate variability values and Sasang constitution distribution were compared and analyzed. Results Male ratio, height, weight, body mass index, red blood cell count, hemoglobin level and creatinine level were higher in NAFLD groups than in control group. The levels of sodium and amylase were higher in control than in NAFLD. In liver function, the levels of aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transpepsidase of NAFLD were higher. In metabolic syndrome index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were higher in NAFLD, while high density lipoprotein cholesterol level was higher in control. The alpha-feto protein level was higher in NAFLD, and the heart rate variability was not different between NAFLD and control groups. In Sasang constitution, Taeeumin ratio of NAFLD was higher than of control. Conclusions The results suggest that nonalcoholic fatty liver is clinically related to liver dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, tumor markers, and Sasang constitution. Further studies are needed to control nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and prevent severe disease such as cirrhosis and cancer caused by fatty liver.
