  • Background : Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) is the field of traditional Korean medicine that emphasize four constitutional types for diagnosis and treatment. Appearance, personalities and pathological characteristics are main factors of Sasang constitutional classification. Previous studies carried out by the pulse analyzer showed that the pulse wave can discriminate these types. In addition, It was reported that the pulse wave are affected by age and sexuality. In this study, we investigated the pulse wave characteristics related Sasang constitution types in control group regarding their age and sexuality. Subjects and Method : Two hudred and eighteen volunteers participated in this study: healthy men in $20{\sim}49$ years old. Participants were interviewed and examined to evaluate their health condition and Sasang constitution type. Then they were tested with pulse analyzer when they ere stabilized. The pulse at the radial artery just beside styloid process was measured, because this area is landmark for pulse diagnosis in oriental medicine. 3-D Mac pulse analyzer (Daeyo Medi Co. Ansan. Korea) was used in this study. We analyzed main features of pulse waves with the Sasang condtitution types by the SPSS for Windows (ver 12.0). Results : There was significant difference between Taeum and other types in contact pressure as weil as in coefficient of floating and sinking pulse. Conclusion : By analyzing pulse waves of healthy adult men. we found significant differences exist between Taeum and other types. These pulse differences may characterize Taeum type, and it will be helpful for the evaluation of Taeum type.

  • Glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms (GST) were examined in 98 cases with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) to test the hypothesis that GST polymorphisms confer a risk to an individual to develop CVD. Tobacco smoke is a major cause of both cancer and vascular disease. We therefore were stratified the subjects with CVD for smoking status, and then examined whether polymorphisms in this detoxification enzyme gene, GST, influence risk of CVD. Neither GSTM1 nor GSTT1 genotypes in the CVD group was significantly different from the control group (n=230), even in smokers. We attempted the combined analyses for GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes in CVD for smoking status. No significant association observed between the combined genotypes and CVD. We also classified the subjects and control group into four types according to Sasang Constitutional Medicine, Korean Traditional Oriental Medicine, and investigated the association among GST genotypes, CVD, and Sasang constitutional classification. Our observations do not confirm the effect of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes as a risk factor for CVD, even in smokers. Furthermore, we first attempted to evaluate the efficacy of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and to find an association with CVD.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify the research trends and major fields of Sasang Constitutional Medicine by analyzing the topics of papers contained in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. Methods To classify the research themes of the paper, theory, Characteristics in Sasang Constitution(SC), Diagnosis in SC, Treatment in SC, etc. categories and subcategories were created. Two researchers reviewed the title, abstract, and text of the paper and classified them according to the category classification. In case of disagreement, the category was determined through discussion with one of the remaining researchers. Results & Conclusions A total of 1,169 papers published in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. The number of published papers has increased steadily since the first issue of the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and in 2008, the largest number of papers were published, but since then, the number of papers has gradually decreased. When classifying the categories of published papers according to research themes, the Theory field occupied a large portion in the early stages, but since then, the proportion has decreased steadily, and the number of publications has plummeted since 2012. On the other hand, in Treatment in SC field, its proportion has soared to account for about half of the papers since 2001. In Characteristics in SC and Diagnosis in SC fields, since the early 1990s, the number of publications has been consistently maintained.

  • UNGI(運氣) theory is one of the most important theory in Oriental medicine. But it's so difficult to adapt to real medic. Long time ago many Oriental Physicians disscussed this with other physicians, UNGI to Oriental Medicine, and so still now. Remarkably, it is important as a basic theory itself, UNGI exist as a special medic. We can see that in the book of ‘五運六氣韓醫學寶鑑’, ‘運氣演繹方藥篇’ and other such kind of books. The special thing is we can predict each man's disease through the date of his birth. And more, we can make out prescription for each person's health. In addition, by knowing his date of birth, we can calculate his date of pregnancy, and with the same way, we can also predict and prescript that he can be protected from his fateful disease. But, the way like this can make Oriental medic an astrology and a superstition. So I studied on this and concluded as follow, 1. UNGI theory is important in the Oriental Medicine not only in basic but on diagnosis and attendance. 2. Mechanical abuse in the past, make UNGI theory unbelievable. But Liu Ha-gan(劉河間) studied so deeply, and knew the right way to applicate UNGI theory on Oriental medic. 3. It is not logical the pregnant day counted thru birthday, so we have to percept this an abstract idea. And it founded detail way to count the pregnant day. 'UNGI' as a medical system, by knowing his birthday we can predict and prevent his fateful disease. Of course, I cannot find such substances in Neijing, and classic books on Oriental medicine. So queer at a glance, but clinically it has some valuable meanings. However, There's little to prove its foundation. It is similar to astrology, we cannot define its base. The problems we have to trace and find out.

  • 1.Objects of Research This research is purposed to find methods of treatment on serious diseases, through summarizing etiology, classification and treatment on serious diseases proposed in Sasang constitutional medicine 2.Methods of Research It was researched as bibliologically with Dong-mu's chief medical writings such as ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Soose Bowon(東醫壽世保元)${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun(東醫壽世保元四象草本卷)${\lrcorner}$ 3.Results and Conclusions 1. The principle of treatment in the previous medicine is to treat each disease by 'Assisting-Good Qi' and 'Removig-Bad Qi'. but The principle of treatment in Sasang Constitutional medicine is to manage incurable disease by helping 'Essential Qi of each constitution(體質正氣)' 2. Incurable disease is classified into a chronic disease by 'Nature(性氣)' and a acute disease by 'Emotion(情慾)'. Both diseases became serious through 'Noi-Ok(牢獄)' and 'Wi-Gyoung(危傾)'. A chronic disease is much in the middle years of life and become senile disease. A acute disease is much in the young years of life and make patients die young. 3. prognoses of incurable disease are different from degree of Inherent vitality(命脈實數) and term of disease. The case in which Inherent vitality is exhausted is thought that is unable to treat. 4. The prevention of incurable disease Is more important the treatment of one in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. but if incurable disease is caught, Medicine(醫藥) and management(調養) must be used together for treatment of incurable disease. Medicine is more important in the level of 'Noi-Ok(牢獄)' and management is more important in the level of 'Wi-Gyoung(危傾)'. 5. Therefore, incurable disease should be treated by method that 'Essential Qi of each constitution(體質正氣)' is recovered and declination is removed through 'controlling mind(治心) and correcting Qi(正氣), so then the state of 'Golden mean(中庸)' is reached.

  • Objectives The purpose of study was to identify cancer related symptoms of Sasang Constitution based on the classic of Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM). Methods The bibliographical study was performed with "Dongyisoosebowon-Shinchukbon(東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)", Dongyisoosebowon-Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元 四象草本券), "Cancer", and several review articles. The perspective on severe illness in SCM was investigated. And 'the critical state' of constitutional symptoms based on "Dongyisoosebowon" was identified as cancer related symptoms. Results and Conclusions The perspective on severe illness of SCM was focused on the human being itself, compared with symptom based traditional Chinese medicine. The preservation of requisite energy (保命之主) was a vital factor of longevity to maintain healthy status and the classification of severity of disease. And critical state was an important indicator to control severe illness. Regarding cancer related symptoms in SCM, Janggwol(臟厥), Eumsung-gyeokyang(陰盛隔陽證), Janggyeol(藏結證) of Soeumin symptoms, Hwangdal(黃疸), Haso(下消), Eumheo-oyel(陰虛午熱證), Gochang, Tohyul(吐血) of Soyangin's symptoms, Joyeol(燥熱證), Bokchang-bujong(腹脹浮腫) of Taeeumin's symptoms, and Eolgyek of Taeyangin's symptoms could be shown the association with cancer. According to the prognosis on disease severity, regimens of daily life, behavior modifications as well as medications were also emphasized with great importance to control severe illness in SCM. These holistic approach for controlling severe illness in SCM could lead to the improvement of treatment outcome.
