  • The jet structure issuing from a conventional convergent nozzle of variable expansion rate is compared with the result from the nozzle of a constant expansion rate using a normal type annular slit. In experiments, to investigate the jet characteristics between the two cases of jet, the mean velocity of nozzle exit is fixed to be 90m/s, the pressures along the jet axis and radial directions are measured by a scanning valve system moving with 3-axis auto-traverse unit, and the velocity distribution obtained by calculation from the measured static and total pressures is compared. Also to obtain the highly stable and convergence jets, it is turned out that the flow through a nozzle of constant expansion rate using the Coanda effect with an annular slit is the most preferable than that case through variable expansion rate nozzle. Furthermore, it is found that the pressure drop along the nozzle for the constant expansion rate nozzle is small relatively against to the case of variable expansion rate nozzle.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate characteristics of an inverter driven water-to-water refrigeration system with a variation of compressor frequencies and expansion devices. The frequency of a compressor varied from 30Hz to 75Hz, and performance of the systems applying three different expansion devices such as capillary tube, thermostatic expansion valve(TXV), and electronic expansion valve(EEV) were measured. The load conditions were altered by varying the temperature of the secondary fluid entering condenser and evaporator with a constant flow rate. When the test conditions were deviated from the standard value(rated value), TXV and EEV showed better performance than capillary tube due to optimum control of mass flow rate and superheat. In the present study, it was observed that the variable area expansion device had better performance than constant area expansion device in an inverter refrigeration system due to active control of flow area with a change of compressor frequency and load conditions.

  • In the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is well known that the gas wiping through an air knife system is most effective because of its uniformity in coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, workability in high speed, and simplicity of control. However, gas wiping used in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing at the strip edge above a certain high speed of process. It is also known that the problem of edge splashing is more harmful than that at the mid strip surface. For a given liquid(of a certain viscosity and surface tension), the onset of splashing mainly depends upon the strip velocity, the gas-jet pressure, and the nozzle's stand-off distance. In these connections in the present study, we proposed three kinds of air knife system having nozzles of constant expansion rate, and compared the jet structures issuing from newly proposed nozzle systems with the result by a conventional one. In numerical analysis, the governing equations are consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is employed to solve turbulence stress and so on. As the result, it is found that we had better use the constant expansion-rate nozzle which can be interpreted from the point view of the energy saving for the same coating thickness. Also, we better reduce the size of separation bubble and enhance the cutting ability at the strip surface, by using an air-knife having constant expansion-rate nozzle.

  • For the purpose of preventing the flow undulation in the cascade of steam turbine, the blades are made into a constant expansion rate in static pressure. And the flow in those cascades is transonic or supersonic in the range of 0.7-2.0 in Mach number. As a consequence, an oblique shock wave, known as inner or outer edge shock wave, arises in the flow of cascades. Especially when the steam in cascades is in a state of high wetness, nonequilibrium condensation and condensation shock wave occur, and they give rise to an interference with oblique shock wave. In the present study the case of expansion of moist air through a supersonic nozzle of constant expansion rate, which behaves similar to that of wet steam, was adopted. The effect of nonequilibrium condensation on the oblique shock wave generated by placing the wedge into the supersonic part of the nozzle was investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between nonequilibrium condensation zone and incident point of the oblique shock wave, oblique shock wave angle, the variations of angles of incident and reflected shock waves due to the variation of initial stagnation supersaturation and the relationship between the height of Mach stem and initial stagnation supersaturation are discussed.

  • In order to study the relation between expansion of the specimen and the hydrogen absorption rate, thin palladium plates with cold rolling were used. Thin palladium plates were hydrogenated in the 0.1mol $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte by electrochemical method. The expansion behavior on hydrogen absorbing can be obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis and by micrometer measurement It is noted that the expansion rate of Palladium specimens in thickness direction is larger than in length and width direction. The lattice constants increase quickly with increasing hydrogen absorbing rate up to 0.5, but above the rate they keep constant. Also the clues for plastic deformation, such as slip lines and voids, were observed in abundantly even though the plates were hydrogenated once.

  • An expansion device plays an important role in optimizing the heat pumps by controlling refrigerant flow and balancing the system pressures. Conventional expansion devices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves due to increasing focus on comfort, energy conservation, and application of a variable speed compressor. In addition, the amount of refrigerant charge in a heat pump is another primary parameter influencing system performance. In this study, the flow characteristics of the expansion devices are analyzed, and the effects of refrigerant charge amount on the performance of the heat pump and the variation of compressor speed are investigated at various operating conditions. Mass flow rate through capillary tube, short tube orifice, and EEV was strongly dependent on the upstream pressure and subcooling. The heat pump system is very sensitive with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. The performance of it can be optimized by adjusting the flow rate through expansion device to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.

  • A rapid expansion of moist air of condensible gas through a supersonic nozzle gives rise to condensation of nonequilibrium and equilibrium processes. Because most of the effects of condensation on the flow are caused by process of nonequilibrium condensation, it is very important to know the onset. condition of nonequilibrium condensation. In the present study, the relation between the initial relative stagnation humidity and the onset Mach number, for the case of the similarity law suggested by Zierep and Lin. Furthermore, the present theoretical result number is compared with the experimental, numerical and other results.
