This paper is results of numerical works of investigating effects of horizontal drain arrangements on vacuum consolidation. Extensive numerical analyses were carried out to find the appropriate arrangements of horizontal drain of vacuum consolidation. Commercially available program of CRISP, well known to be good to modelling the behavior of clay material, was used Cam-clay model, based on the Critical State of Soil Mechanics(CSSM), was used to simulate the geotechnical engineering behavior of clay. Model test results carried out previously in the laboratory were compared with numerically estimated results and it was found that results about consolidational settlement with times were in good agreements. Based on this confirmation, parametric numerical study was performed to investigate effects of horizontal drain arrangements on vacuum consolidation with changing the vertical and horizontal spacings between drains for the given soil properties and vacuum. The effect of distance of drain located in top layer from the surface of the ground on the settlement due to vacuum was also investigated. As a results of numerical analyses, appropriate arrangements of horizontal drain to maximize the consolidation settlement due to vacuum were found. The mechanism of vacuum consolidation about the vacuum pressures being transferred to the effective stresses around drains was also evaluated.
An individual vacuum consolidation system has gained a popularity for a ground improvement of soft clayey soil. Finite element anaylses have been performed to simulate the individual vacuum consolidation system using a Plaxis 2D. The modelling procedures of the vacuum consolidation system are presented with the results of an unit-cell analysis. In addition, a case study was carried out to assess the applicability of the Plaxis 2D for simulating the consolidation behavior of soft ground subjected to the individual vacuum pressure.
In this study, the influence of progressive consolidation from the drainage boundary on the subsequent process of consolidation was investigated. Analytical theory and numerical program f3r consolidation of clayey soil were developed based on finite difference method, in which spatial variation of permeability and volume compressibility were implemented. And model ground with normally consolidated clayey soils and a vertical drain at its center were simulated. Various types of soils with different relations between coefficient of volume compressibility and permeability and void ratio were applied. Also numerical simulations based on the properties of the normally consolidated clay at Nakdong River basin and reconstituted kaolinite soil were performed to recognize its practical impact. Consequently, it is found out that retardation of consolidation induced by progressive consolidation is very important to understand consolidation behavior on field conditions and its effect is remarkable at the initial state of consolidation, and increases with plasticity index and applied load.
This study is conducted to minimize the problems caused by the difference between the settlement and settlement time of the one-dimensional consolidation analysis by the Terzaghi's consolidation theory, which is generally used in domestic soft soil design, from the settlement and settlement time measured at the field site. Consolidation-time factor considering the field site characteristics can be determined using the relationship among the degree of consolidation, settlement time, and time factor, the time-settlement curve measured at the field is reverse- analysis using a numerical-analysis technique to reproduce the same consolidation behavior as in the field. Time-settlement and time-excessive pore water pressure data when the same consolidation behavior as the site is reproduced Consolidation-time factor of the soil of Songsan Green City by settlement and excess pore water pressure was calculated using the settlement and excess pore water pressure for each settlement time. If the results of this study use the Terzaghi consolidation-time factor, which does not consider the consolidation characteristics of the soft ground target area, it is difficult to determine the end time of the soft ground during construction. It is necessary to use the established settlement-time factor.

In this study, finite element analysis is performed for consolidation behavior prediction of drainage-installed soft deposits. Finite element analysis is performed under the two strain conditions as small strain with limited application and large strain for relatively thick layers, large deformation and non-linear material properties. The analysis conditions such as layer depth, loading conditions, smear effects are also changed and variation of consolidation behavior for each condition is estimated from ABAQUS program.
The undrained creep tests with isotropically and anisotropically overconsolidated clays were performed to investigate the effects of anisotropic consolidation on the undrained creep rupture behavior. Results of tests showed that the undrained creep rupture behaviors were iuluenced significantly by stress history including overconsolidation ratio and consolidation pressure ratio$(\sigma_{3c}/\sigma_{le})$. That is. the creep strength of clay increases with the increase of both overconsolidation ratio and consolidation pressure ratio. It, therefore, is dangerous to decide the possibility of creep rupture of clay by the isotropically consolidated creep rupture test in the case of the coefficient of earth pressure lower than 1.0. And the creep strength of clay could be obtained by the equation of the upper yield strength suggested by Finn and Shead(1973) irrespective of both overconsolidation ratio and consolidation pressure ratio.
Vast parts of the east of Tabriz city have been covered by Baghmisheh formation marls. These marls can be classified into three types based on their color as identified in yellow, green, and gray marls. Many high-rise buildings and other projects were founded and now is constructing on these marls. Baghmisheh formation marls are classified as stiff soil to very weak rock, therefore they undergo considerable consolidation settlement under foundation loads. This study presents the physical properties and consolidation behavior of these marls. According to the XRD tests, major clay minerals of marls are Illite, Kaolinite, Montmorillonite and Chloride. Uniaxial compressive strength are 100-250, 300-480 and 500-560 kPa for yellow, green and gray marls, respectively. Consolidation and creep behavior of Baghmisheh marls investigated by using of one dimensional consolidation apparatus under stress level up to 5 MPa. The results indicate that yellow marls have high compressibility, settlement and deformation modules. Green marls have an intermediate compressibility and settlement and while gray marls have low compressibility and settlement and from the foundation point of view have high stability. According to the creep test results, all types of marls have not been entered to progressive creep phase up to pressure 5 MPa.

Yano method had been used in predicting the settlement of self-weight consolidation of dredged soil in the construction of reclamating the dredged soil. Its estimation was found to show some different results from field measurements. The numerical analysis with PSDDF was peformed find such differences, considering the effect of desiccation on the consolidation during the remaining time after reclamation. For the parametric study, numerical analyses with/without consideration of desiccation were carried out with changing the conditions of desiccation such as the number of placing the fill and the time period between each placement. As results of analysis, estimations about consolidation settlement and distribution of water contents with consideration of desiccation was in good agreements with field measurements. It was also found that the number of placing the fill and the time period between each placement did not affect the behavior of self-weight consolidation as much as the effect of desiccation.
The predicted consolidation behavior of in-situ soft clay is quite different from the meas ureal one mainly due to the approximate numerical modelling techniques as well as the uncertainties involved in soil properties and geological configurations. In order to improve the prediction, this paper takes the following pinto consideration : an optimization technique should be adopted for characterizing the in-situ properties from measurements and also an equivalent and efficient model be considered to incorporate the actual 3-D effects. The soil parameters used be the modified Camflay model, which have an effect on the process of consolidation, were back-analyzed by BFGS scheme on the basis of settlements and pore pressures measured in real sites. The optimization technique was implemented in a general consolidation analysis program SPINED. By using the program, one may be able to appropriately analyze the timetependent consolidation behavior of soft deposits.
In the design of ground improvement using band-shaped prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), it is required to determine a reasonable equivalent circle of PVDs. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out in order to investigate the resonable equivalent circle of PVD considering consolidation behavior of improved soft clay ground by PVD. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time were elucidated, together with the equivalent circle of PVD considering consolidation behaviors.
