The consolidation tests are conducted to investigate the soil particle crushing stress for understanding the secondary compression characteristics of carbonate sandy sabkha soil caused by particle crushing under a high confining stress. The rate of secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$) is introduced instead of the rate of secondary compression to define the characteristic of the particle crushing compression settlement ($S_s{^*}$). Void ratio ($e_p{^*}$) and settlement ($H_p{^*}$) in particle crushing are used as a reference point of secondary behavior, and the ratio of primary compression index ($C_c$) to secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$), $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}/C_c$ value was changed from 0.0105 to 0.0187. When comparing with quartz sands, secondary compression settlement of sabkha is very large due to particle crushing which is not usually observed in quartz sand. It is observed that as the depth of sabkha layer becomes deep, the $S_s{^*}$ and $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$ increase under the same stress level.

In the study a 2 dimensional model test was executed to grasp the effect of the taking load of equipments on the ground when improving a soft ground like dredging reclaimed ground. The static load and the dynamic load in the consolidated model ground was $0.02kg/cm^2,\;0.03kg/cm^2\;and\;0.04kg/cm^2$ respectively. After consolidating far two months by consolidation load of $0.02kg/cm^2,\;0.03kg/cm^2\;and\;0.04kg/cm^2$ respectively, the ultimate bearing capacity was $0.16kg/cm^2,\;0.19kg/cm^2,\;0.24kg/cm^2$ respectively. And the energy price of dynamic load test at the same point as the settlement of static load test indicated $E=336{\sim}945kg{\cdot}cm,\;E=252{\sim}780kg{\cdot}cm\;and\;E=323{\sim}727kg{\cdot}cm$ for each consolidation load. When the static load and the dynamic load operated at the same ground condition, the heaving quantity was bigger in the case of the dynamic load than in the case of the static load, and the horizontal displacement quantity the in the case of dynamic load was exhibited very deficiently compared to the quantity in the case of static load test.
In this study, prediction of soil behavior under vacuum preloading with vertical drain is explored on the basis of numerical models and toe results were compared with field measurements. Reasonable prediction of the time rate of settlements and pore pressure dissipation under vacuum preloading is the maj or concern. The conventional method for vatsuum preloading is based on modeling vacuum preloading as surcharge loading for the consolidation analysis. However, this modeling may violate the real behavior of soils under vacuum loading since the total stress in the analysis varies due to the modeled surcharge loading whereas in'.situ total stress of soils under vacuum loading is constant. In this study a new method is suggested. Instead of modeling vacuum loading as surcharge loading, negative hydraulic head is applied at the surface drain boundary to simulate the vacuum preloading. Comparisons of predictions and field measurements of soil behavior under vatsuum preloading are presented and the usefulness of the new modeling technique is demonstrated.
Artificial Organism-used application areas are expanding at a break-neck speed with a view to getting things done in a dynamic and Informal environment. A use of general programming or traditional hi methods as the representation of Artificial Organism behavior knowledge in these areas can cause problems related to frequent modifications and bad response in an unpredictable situation. Strategies aimed at solving these problems in a machine-learning fashion includes Genetic Programming and Evolving Neural Networks. But the learning method of Artificial-Organism is not good yet, and can't represent life in the environment. With this in mind, this research is designed to come up with a new behavior evolution model. The model represents behavior knowledge with Classification Rules and Enhanced Backpropation Neural Networks and discriminate the denomination. To evaluate the model, the researcher applied it to problems with the competition of Artificial-Organism in the Simulator and compared with other system. The survey shows that the model prevails in terms of the speed and Qualify of learning. The model is characterized by the simultaneous learning of classification rules and neural networks represented on chromosomes with the help of Genetic Algorithm and the consolidation of learning ability caused by the hybrid processing of the classification rules and Enhanced Backpropagation Neural Network.

Physical characteristics of cement-admixed clay such as water content, specific gravity, unit weight and void ratio are main factors for strength, compressibility and prediction of consolidation behavior. In the past, the physical characteristics of admixed soils could be understanded through complex laboratory tests and field survey after construction. In this study, the tests were performed with conditions such as clay water contents 0%-170%, cement contents 5%-25% and curing period 3-90days after that analyzed for changes which are water content, specific gravity unit weight and void ratio of admixed soils. A prediction of properties through mechanical relationships with clay in situ water content, cement content and curing period could be proposed using the test results. The prediction equation of void ratio of admixed soils was derived using void ratio equation in geotechnical engineering and compared with test results of bangkok clay and then this study could be verified.

Expansive soils are renowned for their swelling-shrinkage property and these volumetric changes resultantly cause huge damage to civil infrastructures. Likewise, subgrades consisting of expansive soils instigate serviceability failures in pavements across various regions of Pakistan and worldwide. This study presents the use of polypropylene fibers to improve the engineering properties of a local swelling soil. The moisture-density relationship, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus (E50), California bearing ratio (CBR) and one-dimensional consolidation behavior of the soil treated with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8% fibers have been investigated in this study. It is found that the maximum dry density of reinforced soil slightly decreased by 2.8% due to replacement of heavier soil particles by light-weight fibers and the optimum moisture content remained almost unaffected due to non-absorbent nature of the fibers. A significant improvement has been observed in UCS (an increase of 279%), E50 (an increase of 113.6%) and CBR value (an increase of 94.4% under unsoaked and an increase of 55.6% under soaked conditions) of the soil reinforced with 0.4% fibers, thereby providing a better quality subgrade for the construction of pavements on such soils. Free swell and swell pressure of the soil also significantly reduced (94.4% and 87.9%, respectively) with the addition of 0.8% fibers and eventually converting the medium swelling soil to a low swelling class. Similarly, the compression and rebound indices also reduced by 69.9% and 88%, respectively with fiber inclusion of 0.8%. From the experimental evaluations, it emerges that polypropylene fiber has great potential as a low cost and sustainable stabilizing material for widespread swelling soils.
Tn this study, model soil deposits are prepared in large test chambers to minimize the scale effects. Also, slurry of mixture containing 50 percent kaolin clay and 50 percent silica has been consolidated to simulate the process of natural soil deposit formation and to reduce the consolidation time. To provide a more detailed description of varying soil properties along the soil profile of model clay deposits and to compare the in-situ test results with those from prototype tests, miniature in-situ tests, including vane shear, piezoprobe, and cone penetration tests were conducted in each of the clay deposits. The current results indicate that consistent soil deposits were prepared for the current and previous test programs. Also, reasonable predicting methods of prototype behavior based on model in-situ test results were suggested in this study by examining differences between the test results from both the model and prototype tests.
For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.
The object of this paper is to study the general characteristics of overconsolidated silty clays subjected to repeated loading. The samples are first remolded. overconsolidated and a series of strain - controlled triaxial repeated tests are carried out. Generally the relationship of deviator stress - axial strain of overconsolidated clay is similar in pattern to the normally consolidated clay under single load. But the behavior of the pore water pressure build up in the sample subjected to repeated loading is dependent upon the consolidation history and the level of repeated stress. Therefore through the series of the tests, the characteristics of stress -strain relationship of soils which are differentlly overconsolidated are investigated, analysed and then compared with each soils. And also, from the relationship of test results, the strength and strain characteristics of soils are obierved. The equilibrium lines which presents the critical repeated stress and equilibrium state in the sample under repeated loading, are often straight, but may be curved. And the tendency of the equilibrium lines is observed as to the variation of overconsolidation ratio.
Increases in excess pore water pressure without change of surcharge load were reported in clay underneath embankment at Berthierville and Olga sites after the end of construction. These abnormal phenomena could not be explained by classical consolidation theory. This paper presents a nonlinear viscoplastic model to interpret an increase in pore water pressure on natural clay, The proposed model can consider the combined processes of pore water pressure dissipation according to Darcy's law and pore water pressure generation due to viscoplastic strain, as well as time-dependent viscoplastic behaviour and strain rate dependency of preconsolidation pressure. The calculated results using numerical analysis are compared with measured ones under embankments built on soft clay at Berthierville and Olga in Quebec, Canada. It may be possible to explain the phenomenon of excess pore water pressure increase after the end of construction using the proposed nonlinear viscoplastic model.
