  • Reports about coefficients of consolidation in horizontal direction of marine clays located at seven different sites on western and southern coast area in Korea were reviewed and characteristics of them were investigated. As results of analyses, for relation between the depth of ground and coefficients, any trend and correlation between them can not be found since they are more influenced by the nature of geological formation rather than the depth of ground. Dissipation time t50, one of important factors in estimating value of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction, was found to be quite related to them. For the correlation between the maximum pore pressure developed and coefficients, coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction tend to decrease with increase of the maximum pore pressure whereas the ground water level or static pore pressure do not have any specific correlation with those coefficients. Values of coefficient tends to increase with values of liquid limit, plastic limit and plastic index and thus they are found to be directly influenced by the contents of fines. Values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction are also increased with increases of permeability in horizontal direction and coefficient of consolidation in vertical direction. They were highly correlated between coefficient of consolidation and permeability in horizontal direction while values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction have a relatively low correlation with values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction. Sometimes, coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction obtained from field tests were estimated 2-3 times greater than those from laboratory tests.

  • The following is the result of experiment on consolidation test under various load increment ratios by alternation of standard load increment ratio. The more load increment ratio was, the more settlement was resulted. But expansions were not associated with load increment ratios. Primary consolidation took longer period to complete as load increment ratio was decreased. And under the condition of over-consolidated range, the completion of primary consolidation took longer period as the load was incremented. Under the condition of normal consolidated range, there was no change in time of completing primary consolidation. The coefficient of consolidation was decreased with increment of consolidation load, and the coefficient of consolidation had high values as the load increment ratio was increased. The values of ratio of secondary consolidation was highest near the transition point of consolidation curve.

  • In this study, the ground settlement was investigated by using monitoring data of the test sites where vacuum consolidation method and surcharge method were applied for improving deep soft soil. The monitoring data are chosen in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area port construction site reclaimed with very soft dredged clay. These data are analyzed to compare the consolidation characteristics between the different loading methods for soil improvement. Through analysis of the loading time, it is shown that the ground settlement reaches its allowable value under vacuum consolidation loading by about 45% faster than that of the surcharge loading consolidation. This could be explained that vacuum consolidation method makes the isotropic consolidation condition so that the time for reaching a certain final preloading without soil failure can be shortened.

  • Consolidation characteristics have been investigated by using Rowe cell consolidation tester for dredged soil, which is more than two times as much as the liquid limit. To examine the effects of variation of water content on consolidation characteristic, tests were carried out varying the initial water content from $100\%\;to\;150\%.$ The results were compared with the consolidation characteristics of remolded clay. The test results showed that the hither the initial water content of dredged clay was, the more noticeable the non-linear behavior of e-log P curves occurred. The variation of the gradient was apparent to load stage 40kPa and became less apparent after load stage 80kPa on the e-log P curves. Ratio of compression index stayed within the range suggested by Mesri and variation of initial water content has hardly influenced the coefficient of consolidation. On the contrary, it was found that the magnitude of consolidation load affects the vertical coefficient of consolidation. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and the results were compared with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.

  • A series of column test with a silty marine soil mixed with Jumunjin Standard Sand were performed to investigate the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic dredged soils. Column tests were carried out by using the separable column to measure the grain size distribution of consolidated layer. Column tests were performed with changing the mixing ratio of Jumunjin Standard Sand to the silty marine soil, initial water content of slurry and initial height of slurry. Height of interface of slurry was monitored during tests and grain size distribution tests were carried out after finishing tests. Influencing factors on the particle segregation, eventually to the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic soil, were analyzed on the thesis of test results. As results of column tests, the mixing ratio of sand to the silty marine soil and the initial water content of slurry were known to affect the characteristics of settling and consolidation resulted in significant particle segregation of slurry. Initial height of slurry was found not to affect seriously to particle segregation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the consolidation characteristics of the remolded clay by the oedometer and the constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation tests. As the rate of strain increases, the settlement rapidly decreased. As the ratio of the sand in the specimen increases, its effect on the rate of strain to the settlement was reduced. As the effective stress increased, the void ratio decreased, while the rate of strain increased, it did not show a clear variation. The reduction of the void ratio was shown to be less than the oedometer test. The coefficient of vertical consolidation with effective stress showed very large variation around preconsolidation stress, but the rate of strain did not provide significant effects. The rate of strain with effective stress gradually decreased at all tests and mixed ratio of sand. The rate of strain at the constant rate of strain tests showed smaller than in the oedometer test. The coefficient of consolidation at the constant rate of strain tests showed much more increase than in the oedometer test. The ratio of the vertical coefficient of consolidation by the odometer and the constant rate of strain tests showed a large difference according to various tests method and mixing ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that careful attention should be paid to designing the soft ground improvement.

  • Field piezocone dissipation tests are performed, and the results are compared to the Rowe cell consolidation tests results to investigate the consolidation characteristics of soft marine deposit at the same location in Korea. From these results, statistical formula fur the relation between the coefficients of horizontal consolidation$(c_r)$ from Rowe cell consolidation tests and $t_{50}$ from pore pressure dissipation tests by Piezocone is suggested through the regression analysis. The results are also compared to the existing theoretical formula. It is also shown that suggested formula is similar to Torstensson's(1977) formula based on cylindrical cavity expansion theory and Houlsby and Teh's(1988) formula based on strain path method.

  • This paper describes that estimation methods for the distribution of consolidation settlements to investigate the influence of distribution characteristics of compression index on the spatial distribution of consolidation settlements. When the variation of compression index is considerable, the spatial distribution of compression index is estimated using ordinary cokriging. The spatial distribution of consolidation settlements estimated by considering both the variation of compression index and void ratio (CASE-1) is different from the conventional mean value of all soil properties (CASE-2). The settlement of CASE-1 shows the larger variation at short distances rather than that of CASE-2. Whereas the spatial settlement distribution of CASE-1 is affected by the spatial distribution of compression index and the thickness of consolidation layer, the distribution of CASE-2 is significantly influenced by the distribution of the thickness of consolidation layer.

  • Design parameters related to Yano's method(1984, 1985), one of experimental approaches having been used widely in Korea to estimate sedimentation and consolidation of dredged and reclaimed ground, were analyzed and their propriety were reassessed in this paper. Data analyses were performed on the basis of the settling test results using samples from the west coastal area of Korea. From analysis of results, for specific characteristics of these dredged and reclaimed marine soft clays, co-relations of initial water content - coefficient of sedimentation/ consolidation - initial setting velocity were evaluated. Relation between height of soil solid and surface height of slurry at the stages of initiation and termination of consolidation was also assessed. Finally ranges and average values of these design parameters were evaluated and typical empirical equations between these design parameters were also proposed.

  • In this study, using the CRS consolidation tests on reconstituted marine clay, the characteristics of C$\sub$v/, k, e and $\varepsilon$, the anisotropic characteristics of specimen according to the rate of strain were estimated. Also, the validity of the Wissa et al.(1971) consolidation theory on CRS(Constant Rate of Strain) consolidation tests were reviewed. From that results, it was shown that the value of C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/ was increased as the rate of strain was increased. While the difference of the value( C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/) between vertically reconstituted specimen and horizontally reconstituted specimen became small as the rate of strain was increased. It is known that k is different due to the hydraulic gradient(i) during the CRS consolidation tests. The subject of this study is to distinguish steady state from transient state in CRS consolidation tests. Consequently, the difference of the value(C$\sub$v/ and k) is higher in case of vertically reconstituted specimen than horizontally reconstituted specimen.
