  • Consolidants were extended use for conservation of weathered stone heritage. Epoxy, acryl, isocyanate, and alkoxysilane consolidants are most commonly used products. Consolidant of 1T1G_5 wt 0.08 % that consists of T (TEOS: Tetraethyl Orthosilicate) and G (GPTMS: 3-Glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane) were used this study. A shore hardness values show increasing after treated with consolidant in granite. Surface brightness after treated with consolidant are changing slightly dark but turns the original color over time. Ultra-sonic velocity is increased after treated with consolidant but slightly reduced over time to remain constant. It has the advantage of being effective after treated with consolidant in granite and efficiency of consolidation increase with slow velocity before treated with consolidant.

  • Surface layers of stone cultural properties including the soluble salt need consolidation because they are mostly very weak. There is a lot of research on the penetration depth of consolidant in stone and the effect of consolidant on mechanical stability of deteriorated structure. But some conservation experiences show that consolidation with silicic acid ester is not successful on salt contaminated stone cultural properties. In this study, in order to assess the influence of soluble salts$(CaSO_4\;2H_2O,\;NaNO_3)$ on the efficiency of consolidation on the deteriorated stone cultural properties(Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany) sandstone samples have been soaked with the salts solution. The impregnation of consolidant based on ethyl filicate have been afterwards carried out on these samples. As a result, it confirms that the soluble salts act as a preventer or consolidation. They fill up the pores in the stone and prevent that sufficient amount of consolidant enter deeply into the stone. According to this result, if use silicic ethyl ester as a consolidant for the research object which is built by Nebra sandstone, desalination is necessary before the treatment with consolidant. But it is also reported by other researches that some soluble salts improve the consolidation effect. Therefore it should be necessary to pre-study about salt and its harmfulness before the consolidation treatment. In order to consolidate without the aggravative damage in salt contaminated stone cultural heritage, we must first of all study the relations among salt, stone and consolidant.

  • In order to clarify the effect of consolidant, the artificial porous material with low intensity was manufactured using granite powder and Portland cement. We have prepared four kinds of alkoxysilane system consolidants, a acrylic resin and a epoxy resin and investigated about characteristics before and after consolidation. As a result of the research, Silres BS OH 100 was effective for density and surface hardness. SS-101 with hydrophobicity and Site SX-RO with hydrophilicity had the good durability over salts weathering. On the other hand, Syton HT-50 and Paraloid B72 were easily destructed by salt weathering because they were concentrated on surface area by the low penetration depth. Araldite 2020 was the most effective consolidant for improvement of physical properties.

  • We carried out the effect verification of conservation treatment focusing on basement rock of alkali granite at the Yukjonbul (two-pairs of Buddha Triads) carved on rock cliff of Samneung valley in Namsan mountain of Gyeongju. The conservation treatments were used to ethylsilicate-type rock consolidant and epoxy-type resin. It is treatment method that the epoxy-type resin have been applied one time into the exfoliation area, after rock consolidation treatment have been worked for three times. As the result of measuring ultrasonic velocity, P-wave velocity of the exfoliation area was relatively increased after applied the conservation treatments. The ultrasonic velocity of all area was increased as 27.8%. This result has been proved with consolidation effects by consolidant and filler for stone cultural heritages. The treatment method should be worked about three time to consolidate sufficiently for rocks.

  • The Grave encapsulated by lime soil mixture were excavated with clothing and hemp shoes from the Choseon Dynasty in Gooam, Sacheon. Hemp shoes have wood in the center and their surroundings were made of complex materials including herbaceous ones but the front part was lost or became very fragile. We analyzed the hemp shoes and pre-test of consolidant for conservation treatment of hemp shoes. As a result of analyzing, three kinds of plants were identified. For hemp shoes, Oryza spp, hemp, and one kind of dicotyledones were used and it was analyzed that fabrics attached to the back of Dogaengi was cotton. Conservation methods for pre-test of consolidant, Polyethylene Glycol, Paraloid-B72, Dammar gum, Methyl Cellulose and Silicone resin was selected. The solution was sprayed twice in a 24-hour duration. Properties of consolidant was measured; color difference, glossiness difference, folding streangth and tensile streangth. By comparing the results, PEG was confirmed to the most suitable as consolidant. For the conservation treatment, cleaning and strengthening was conducted. For strengthening treatment, PEG 4000 was selected given that the shoes were made of complex materials. The PEG impregnation method was applied with the PEG 4000 concentration gradually changing from 5% to 80% for reinforcement. Then humidity- controlled drying in order to avoid any rapid environment change.

  • Precise scientific-diagnosis for preserving stone cultural properties has been well-advanced, but research on proper methods for conservation, restoration and repair is still in early stage. Accordingly it is quite difficult to establish conservation treatment methods compatible to unique characteristics and environments of each cultural property. We tried to select most compatible conservation materials through thorough assessment of conservation materials in current use. This research is focused on conservation and restoration materials except cleaner, which are used as adhesive, filler, repellent and consolidant. Conservation treatments for stone cultural properties were first tested in 1960's and have been carried out by various methods under relevant organizations and conservation treatment companies since. We investigated present status of conservation materials being used for cultural properties. Based on these data, we will look through types and properties of the conservation materials to figure out existing problems. Among many kinds of resins, the ratio of conservation materials used in cultural properties is very low. Therefore, new conservation materials equipped with proved long-term stability should be developed as soon as possible.

  • Stone cultural heritages are mostly situated in field, so they are damaged from mechanical, chemical and biological weathering, and their degree of strength is also weaken. Therefore, the scientific conservation of the stone cultural heritages are necessary in order to the long-term maintenance and safety conservation. In this study, we attempt to estimate on the field application of consolidants which are Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300 and 1T1G according to the quality of the rocks. Based on the ultrasonic velocity, conditions of weathering damage before treatment are mainly ranked completely weathering condition (CW) or partly highly weathering condition (HW). After the first treatment, weathering damage conditions are changed by the high weathering condition (HW). These results shows that the internal pores of stone are filled with consolidant materials, so average ultrasonic velocities increases after treatment. And Remmers KSE 300 which is consolidant material is highest rate of increase of average ultrasonic velocities.

  • Paraloid B-72 of acrylic resins has been widely used as consolidant for bronze artifacts conservation. In previous study, xylene was appropriate for paraloid B-72 when bronze artifacts consolidated. In this study, we compared the coating properties of paraloid B-72 in various concentration levels. The surface before and after coating were observed by optical microscope and AFM. Thickness and adhesive strength of films were tested. For testing coating stability, we performed yellowing test and EIS. After these experiments, we concluded 15wt% paraloid B-72 was adequate concentration for bronze artifacts conservation when paraloid B-72 used in xylene as solvent. Because 15wt% paraloid B-72 has the lowest polarity and high hydrophobic.
