In order to analyze the heat transfer phenomena in the plasma flames, a mathematical model describing heat and fluid How in an electric arc has been developed and used to predict heat transfer from the arc to the steel bath in a DC Electric Arc Furnace. The arc model takes the separate contributions to the heat transfer from each involved mechanism into account, i.e. radiation, convection and energy transported by electrons. The finite volume method and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing MHD equations, i.e., conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy together with the equations describing a standard $k-\varepsilon$ model for turbulence. The model predicts heat transfer for different currents and arc lengths. Finally these calculation results can be used as a useful insight into plasma phenomena of the industrial-scale electric arc furnace. from these results, it can be concluded that higher arc current and longer arc length give high heat transfer.
Recently, the environmental conservation has been emphasized over the world. Building industry should carefully reflected the development focused on the economic aspect as well as the environmental considerations. Therefore, it requires the technology development to mitigate the environmental pollution through the reducement of the energy and resources usage amount over the building life cycle. For these, it should be required to set up the analysis methodology to grasp the amount of the environmental pollution and energy and resources in each step of building life cycle. In this paper, it aimed at preparing the analysis process and analyzing the embodied energy and $CO_2$ and $SO_x$ emission according to the building work, field work, mechanical and electrical work on the new building and remodelling, utilizing the inventory analysis which is one of the LCA process.
A cycle simulation program is developed and its predictions are compared with the test bed measurements of a direct injection (DI) diesel engine. It is based on the mass and energy conservation equations with phenomenological models for diesel combustion. Two modeling approaches for combustion have been tested; a multi-zone model by Hiroyasu et al (1976) and the other one coupled with an in-cylinder flow model. The results of the two combustion models are compared with the measured imep, pressure trace and NOx and soot emissions over a range of the engine loads and speeds. A parametric study is performed for the fuel injection timing and pressure, the swirl ratio, and the squish area. The calculation results agree with the measured data, and with intuitive understanding of the general operating characteristics of a DI diesel engine.
A coaxial pulsed plasma thruster (PPT) with a Teflon cavity was designed, and its performance characteristics were examined varying stored energy, cavity length and capacitance. The PPT was tested as the entire system including the discharge circuit, and the results were explained with both the transfer efficiency and the acceleration efficiency. The transfer efficiency is defined as the fraction of energy in capacitors supplied into plasma, and the acceleration efficiency as the fraction of energy supplied into plasma converted to thrust energy. To estimate these efficiencies, the equivalent plasma resistance was defined and calculated using energy conservation during discharge. The equivalent plasma resistance proportionally increased with cavity length, and therefore the current peak increased with decreasing cavity length. The energy density calculated by the transfer efficiency was increased with decreasing cavity length. As a result, higher acceleration efficiency and lower transfer efficiency were obtained with shorter cavity length. Accordingly, there was an optimal cavity length for the thrust efficiency. The specific impulse and the impulse bit per unit stored energy ranged from 390 s and 50 $\mu$ Ns/J for a cavity length of 34 mm to 825 s and 11 $\mu$ Ns/J for a cavity length of 4 mm when the stored energy was fixed to 21.4J. Thus, it was showed that the performance of this PPT approached that of electromagnetic-acceleration-type PPT with decreasing cavity length. The PPT achieved thrust efficiencies of 10-12% at 21.4 J and 6-7% at 5.35 J at cavity lengths between 14 mm and 29 mm.

An assessment of two-equation turbulence models, the low Reynolds k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models, with the compressibility corrections proposed by Sarkar and Wilcox, has been performed. The compressibility models are evaluated by investigating transonic or supersonic flows, including the arc-bump, transonic diffuser, supersonic jet impingement, and unsteady supersonic diffuser. A unified implicit finite volume scheme, consisting of mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations, is used, and the results are compared with experimental data. The model accuracy is found to depend strongly on the flow separation behavior. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel computing scheme is implemented.

Thermal comfort and energy conservation are critical issues in the building sector. Energy consumption in the building sector should be reduced whilst enhancing the thermal comfort of occupants. Concrete is the most widely used construction material in buildings. Its thermal conductivity (k-value) has a direct effect on thermal comfort perception. This study aims to find the optimum value of replacing the normal aggregate with lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) under high strengths and low thermal conductivity, density and water absorption. The k-value of the LECA concrete and its physical and mechanical properties have varying correlations. Results indicate that the oven-dry density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and k-value of concrete decrease when normal coarse aggregates are replaced with LECA. However, water absorption (initial and final) increases. Thermal conductivity and the physical and mechanical properties have a strong correlation. The statistical optimisation of the experimental data shows that the 39% replacement of normal coarse aggregate by LECA is the optimum value for maximising the compressive and splitting tensile strengths whilst maintaining the k-value, density and water absorption at a minimum.
The STELLA program was launched to support the PGSFR development in 2012 and for the 2nd stage, the STELLA-2 facility was designed to investigate the integral effect of safety systems including the comprehensive interaction among PHTS, IHTS and DHRS. In STELLA-2, the long-term transient behavior after accidents can be observed and the overall safety aspect can also be evaluated. In this paper, the basic design concept from engineering basis to specific design is described. The design was aimed to meet similarity criteria and requirements based on various non-dimensional numbers and the result satisfied the key features to explain the reasoning of safety evaluation. The result of this study was used to construct the facility and the experiment is on-going. In general, the final design meets the similarity criteria of the multidimensional physics inside the reactor pool. And also, for the conservation of natural circulation phenomena, the design meets the similarity requirements of geometry and thermo-dynamic behavior.
The higher order singularities[1] are systematically examined, and discussed are their complementarity relation with the nonsingular eigenfunctions and their relations to the configurational forces like J-integral and M-integral. By use of the so-called two state conservation laws(Im and Kim[2]) or interaction energy, originally proposed by Eshelby[3] and later treated by Chen and Shield[4], the intensities of the higher order singularities are calculated, and their roles in elasticplastic fracture are investigated. Numerical examples are presented for illustration.
Numerical analysis of the heat transfer associated with droplet impact on a hot solid surface is performed by solving the equations governing conservation of mass, momentum and energy in the liquid and gas phases. The deformed droplet shape is tracked by a level set method which is modified to achieve volume conservation and to include the effect of contact angle at the wall. The numerical method is validated through the calculations for the cases reported in the literature. Based on the numerical results, the heat transfer rate is found to depend strongly on the droplet spread radius. Decreased advancing/receding contact angles enlarge the splat radius and in turn enhance the wall heat flux. The effect of impact velocity on the droplet spread is reduced as the droplet size decreases. Also, droplet atomization is observed to significantly enhance the heat transfer rate and the effect is pronounced for a smaller size of droplet. An existing model equation to predict the maximum spread radius is improved for application to a micro droplet.
Building energy simulation has become a useful tool for predicting cooling, heating and air-conditioning loads for facilities. It is important to provide building energy performances feed back to the mechanical and electrical system operator and engineer for energy conservation and maintenance of building. From this research, we set up the typical weather data of location, basic description of building, geometric modelling data and the specification of Installed primary HVAC system for establishing the simulation model about energy consuming that take place in multipurpose building complex. The simulation tool of building energy - EnergyPlus (DOE and BLAST based simulation S/W), it has been used and accomplished calculations and analyses for evaluating the effect of the system types and operating condition of central HVAC plant on the building energy consumption. In this paper, we offer comparison and simultaneous results those involve electricity consumption pattern and amount between actual operation versus EnergyPlus simulation to the object building during summer season.
