A new hydroxyl group-containing conjugated ionic polymer, poly[2-ethynyl-N-(p-hydroxyphenylethyl)pyridinium bromide], was synthesized by the activated polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine with p-(2-bromoethyl) phenol without any additional initiator or catalyst. The polymerization proceeded well to give a moderate yield (65%) of polymer at a reaction temparature of 90$^{\circ}C$. Another polymer, poly[2-ethynyl-N-(p-hydroxyphenylethyl)pyridinium tetraphenylborate], was readily prepared by the ion-exchange reaction of poly[2-ethynyl-N-(p-hydroxyphenylethyl)pyridinium bromide] with sodium tetraphenylborate. These polymers were completely soluble in organic solvents such as DMF, DMSO, and acetone, but insoluble in water and ether. Instrumental analyses, such as NMR, IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopies, indicated that the new materials have conjugated polymer backbone systems with the designed substituents and counter anions. X-Ray diffraction analyses of the polymers indicated that they were mostly amorphous.
This study examined the photoemission behaviors of isolated chains of poly[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene](MEH-PPV) dispersed in various solvents including dichloromethane, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran(THF). A change in polymer-solvent interactions in these solutions caused the MEH-PPV chains to adopt different local conformations, which in turn affected their radiative de-excitation pathways. For the polymer in dichloromethane and chloroform, in which the conjugated chains are relatively extended, photoemission occurs mostly at the long chromophores with lowest HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Their emission spectra showed a main peak at ${\sim}560\;nm$. Dual photoemission of high- and low-energy chromophores was observed when the conjugated chains were forced to partially collapse in a poor solvent THF. Novel high-energy peaks and a typical low-energy peak were detected at ${\sim}414\;nm$ and ${\sim}554\;nm$, respectively. The observation of the high-energy peaks indicates significant suppression of the intrachain energy transfer process, which was attributed to the increase in conformational disorder in the partially collapsed coils. An analysis of the excitation spectra suggests that the high-energy peaks belong to short chromophores constituting of one or two repeat units. This study systematically investigated the effects of polymer concentration, temperature and single bond defects along the backbone on the photoemission of the high-energy chromophores.
The light-emitting properties of poly(2-triethylgermyl-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (TEG-PPV) are compared with those of the silyl-substituted PPV homologue, poly(2-trimethylsilyl-1,4phenylenevinylene) (TMS-PPV). The precursor polymer is solution-processable. After carrying out thermal elimination on the precursor polymer film, the resulting fully conjugated polymer film was found to exhibit high thermal stability in air, and absorption that is shifted to the longer wavelength region owing to the extension of the n-conjugated system. TEG-PPV exhibits efficient green light emission; the maximum PL emission of a TEG-PPV thin film was found to be at 515 nm. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels were also determined using photo-emission spectroscopy. The performance of the TEG-PPV EL device was found to be comparable to that of the TMS-PPV device.
Novel poly(aspartic acid) derivatives conjugated with L-lysine moieties and their amphiphilic analogs were synthesized and characterized. The chemical structures of these polymers were confirmed using FT-IR and $^1HNMR$ spectroscopy. The physicochemical properties of amphiphilic copolymers were characterized using an electrophonetic light scattering spectrophotometer (ELS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These results indicated a stable nanoparticle formation within aqueous media. These polymers have potential applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields as delivery vehicles for bioactive molecules.
Organic semiconductors such as conjugated polymers and oligomers have been studied many research groups. The band structures of conjugated polymers and oligomers are similar to those of conventional inorganic semiconductors Thin films based on these materials show a promising potential for Field Effect Transistors(FETs) and Light Emitting Diodes(LED) because fabrication processes are simple and cheaper for large electronic devices and flexible devices are also possible.
We review the evolution of electrochemical studies of conducting polymers into the current state-of-the-art based primarily on our work. While conventional electrochemical experiments sufficed for the needs in the phase of studies of both electrochemical synthesis and characterization of conducting polymers, developments
of various new experimental techniques have led to their introduction to this field for more refined information. As a result, the conventional electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, impedance, and morphological as well as electrical characterization studies all made important contributions to a better understanding of the polymerization mechanisms and the conductive properties of these classes of polymers. From this review, we hereby expect that the electrochemical techniques will continue to play important roles in bringing this field to the practical applications such as nanoscale electronic devices.
Poly(dialkoxyphenylene 1,3,4-oxadiazole)s were conveniently synthesized to compare their material properties of solvent solubility, thermal stability and molecular alignment with respect to alkyl chain length and meta/para-phenylene structure. All prepared polymers exhibited good solubility in co-solvents containing various volume levels of chloroform to trifluoroacetic acid. Meta-polymers showed slightly better solubility than para-polymers. All polymers produced were thermally stable up to $320^{\circ}C$. Photoluminescence of polymer films was observed with blue light emission at around 450 nm. X-ray diffraction patterns of all polymers indicated that they were composed of stacked molecular sheets with the same layer-to-layer distance of $3.4\;{\AA}$. However, side chain-to-side chain and main chain-to-main distances within the layers increased with increasing alkyl chain lengths. The meta-polymer chains were separated more than the para-polymer chains.

We have prepared random, block and graft copolymers with single or dual sensitivities to various stimuli. We have conjugated these polymers to proteins at random lysine sites or at specific sites designed into the protein by genetic engineering. We are also grafting the smart polymers to the surfaces of nanobeads. We are applying these smart conjugates and smart nanobeads in microfluidic devices for various applications, including diagnostics, affinity separations and enzyme bioprocesses. In this talk I will update our work with these interesting hybrid systems.
In 1991, Prof. Toshio Masuda of Kyoto University for the first time synthesized a representative of diphenylacetylene polymer derivatives, poly[1-phenyl-2-(p-trimethylsilyl)phenylacetylene] [PTMSDPA]. This polymer is highly soluble nevertheless a ultra-high molecular weight (Mw) of > $1.0{\times}10^6$ which showed excellent chemical, physical, mechanical properties [1]. As one of the most interesting features of PTMSDPA, Prof. Katsumi Yoshino of Osaka Univ. reported that this polymer emits an intense fluorescence (FL) in a visible region because of the effective exciton confinement within the resonant structure between the polyene pi-conjugated chain and side phenyl full-aromatic bulky groups [2]. Very recently, Prof. Ben-Zhong Tang of Hong-Kong Institute of Science and Technology clarified the idea that the FL emission of disubstituted acetylene polymer derivatives originates from intramolecular excimer due to the face-to-face stacking of the side phenyl groups [3]. Thus, to know what influence to intramolecular excimer emission in the film as well as to further understand how the intramolecular excimer forms in the film became more crucial in order to further precisely design the optimized molecular structure for highly emissive, substituted acetylene polymers in the solid state. In recent studies, we have focused our interests on the origin of the FL emission in order to expand our knowledge to developments of novel sensor applications. It was found that the intramolecular phenyl-pheyl stack structure of PTMSDPA in film was variable in response to various external chemical stimuli. Using PTMSDPA and its derivatives, we have developed various potential applications such as latent fingerprint identification, viscosity sensor, chemical-responsive actuator, gum-like soft conjugated polymer, and bioimaging. The details will be presented in the 49th KVS Symposium held in Pyong Chang city.
We have investigated substituent effect on the stabilization energies, and nucleus-independent chemical shifts of pentafulvalenes and on the electronic structures of the corresponding polypentafulvalenes to design environmentally stable semiconductive or conductive polymers. Geometrical optimizations of the molecules were carried out at the density functional level of theory with B3LYP hybrid functional and 6-311+G(d) basis set. Stabilization energies were estimated using isodesmic and homodesmotic reactions. As a criterion of aromaticity nucleus-independent chemical shifts of the molecules were computed using GIAO approach. For the polymers the geometrical parameters were optimized through AM1 band calculations and the electronic structures were obtained through modified extended Huckel band calculations. It is found that strong electronwithdrawing substituents increase isodesmic and homodesmotic stabilization energies of pentafulvalene, though it does not increase the aromaticity. Nitro-substituted pentafulvalene is estimated to have stabilization energy as much as azulene. However, substitution either with electron-donating groups or with electronwithdrawing groups does not significantly affect the electronic structures of polypentafulvalene and poly (vinylenedioxypentafulvalene).
