Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the radiographic features associated with impacted premaxillary supernumerary teeth, to determine the relationship between their characteristics and their effects on permanent incisors, and to investigate the types of orthodontic treatment that patients received after the extraction of impacted supernumerary teeth. Materials and Methods: The clinical records and radiographs of 193 patients whose impacted premaxillary supernumerary teeth were removed were retrospectively reviewed, and 241 impacted supernumerary teeth were examined. Cone-beam computed tomographic images and panoramic radiographs were examined to determine the number, location, sagittal position, orientation, and morphology of the supernumerary teeth. Their effects on permanent incisors and the orthodontic treatment received by patients after the extraction of the supernumeraries were also investigated. Results: Supernumerary teeth were most frequently observed in the central incisor region, in the palatal position, in the inverted orientation, and were most commonly conical in shape. The most common complication was median diastema, followed by displacement and delayed eruption of the adjacent incisors. Ten (71.4%) of the 14 odontomas showed delayed eruption of the adjacent incisors. Displacement of the incisors was more frequently observed in association with supernumerary teeth with tuberculate or supplemental shapes. Orthodontic traction was most frequently performed after the removal of odontomas. In 32 cases (13.3%), permanent incisors erupted after the orthodontic creation of sufficient space. Conclusion: Median diastema was most common complication. The delayed eruption of incisors was common in supernumerary teeth with a vertical orientation and an odontoma shape.

Incontinentia pigmenti, also called Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome, is a rare X-linked inherited dominant disorder that affects females, but causes spontaneous abortion of prenatal males. Incontinentia pigmenti is a systemic disease with clinical features similar to ectodermal dysplasia, including congenitally missing teeth. The pathogenesis is related to gene mutations in NF-kappa-B essential modulator on chromosome Xq28. Incontinentia pigmenti is caused by a defect in the developmental stage of organs originating from the ectoderm or mesoderm and involves the skin, eyes, hair, teeth and central nervous system. This report discusses the management of three cases of 3 to 5 years old females with incontinentia pigmenti and accompanying multiple missing teeth. The cases had sparse hair, and showed oligodontia and anomalous crowns with supplementary cusps in the posterior teeth and conical anterior teeth. Removable space maintainers were applied, achieving improved esthetics, recovery of mastication and increased self-esteem in the patients.
Apical surgery cuts off the apical root and the crown-to-root ratio becomes unfavorable. Crown-to-root ratio has been applied to periodontally compromised teeth. Apical root resection is a different matter from periodontal bone loss. The purpose of this paper is to review the validity of crown-to-root ratio in the apically resected teeth. Most roots have conical shape and the root surface area of coronal part is wider than apical part of the same length. Therefore loss of alveolar bone support from apical resection is much less than its linear length. The maximum stress from mastication concentrates on the cervical area and the minimum stress was found on the apical 1/3 area. Therefore apical root resection is not so harmful as periodontal bone loss. Osteotomy for apical resection reduces longitudinal width of the buccal bone and increases the risk of endo-perio communication which leads to failure. Endodontic microsurgery is able to realize 0 degree or shallow bevel and precise length of root resection, and minimize the longitudinal width of osteotomy. The crown-to-root ratio is not valid in evaluating the prosthodontic prognosis of the apically resected teeth. Accurate execution of endodontic microsurgery to preserve the buccal bone is essential to avoid endo-perio communication.

This report presents two cases concerning strategies for improving denture retention in pediatric patients with oligodontia caused by hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). Both patients presented with multiple missing teeth, conical canines, alveolar bone atrophy, and a skeletal Class III tendency. In the first case, a modified form of conical-crown-retained denture was used to cover the canines. This approach was carried out without tooth extraction or coping. In the second case of severe alveolar bone resorption and a distally tilted lower left canine, the tooth was restored with a hybrid ceramic crown. It was subsequently converted into a clasp-retained removable partial denture, utilizing a suction mechanism. Both patients are currently receiving regular check-ups for the maintenance of their prosthetic appliances and the evaluation of their growth patterns. This study presents innovative prosthetic treatment methods for pediatric patients with HED who have inadequate denture retention.

Supernumerary teeth are characterized by an excess number of teeth, which can be responsible for a variety of irregularities in the primary and transitional dentition. Supernumerary teeth, especially in the maxillary anterior region, may prevent the eruption of adjacent permanent teeth and cause their ectopic eruption, diastema, root resorption, or formation of dentigerous cyst. Therefore, early diagnosis of supernumerary teeth is important for prevention of such complications, and adequate treatment should be given according to their location, number, and morphologic features. In this case, four supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region were disturbing the eruption of adjacent permanent incisors. Two of them were located in proximity to the central incisor tooth germs that their immediate removal may injure the permanent tooth germs. In order to minimize such complications, surgical extraction of the four supernumerary teeth was performed in two stages. At first, only two inverted conical supernumerary teeth were extracted. The other two tuberculous supernumerary teeth, close to the permanent tooth germs, were extracted later after their natural dislocation. In that way, we could minimize affects on the neighboring permanent tooth germs and also the amount of alveolar bone removed during surgery.

Supernumerary teeth are found frequently in the dental office causing many dental complications. They are one of the many dental abnormalities that may occur during tooth development. Inversely impacted supernumerary teeth in the midpalatal area are especially important clinically because they occur with high frequency and many complications. Though many previous clinical and radiographical studies exist, the sample numbers were small and the evaluation of shape, location, and effects to its surrounding tissue may not be accurate due to the solitary use of intraoral radiographs or panoramic radiographs. Among the patients who visited department of pediatric dentistry, yonsei dental hospital, from July, 1998 to June, 2002, those with inversely impacted supernumerary teeth took computerized tomography for a more accurate diagnosis. Their dental chart, panoramic radiograph and computerized tomography were evaluated for this study. The number, form, convexity, location, distance, and complications of inversely impacted supernumerary teeth in the midpalatal area were recorded. This study show that when the supernumerary teeth is tuberculated with a curved root and is in close proximity to the adjacent teeth, it causes complications such as eruption disturbance, rotation, displacement of adjacent teeth, and diastema. Such factors must be considered in making decisions for diagnosis and treatment.
Scolecenchelys borealis was first added to the Korean fish fauna based on one leptocephalus specimen (total length (TL) 59.2 mm) collected from Dokdo, in the East Sea. Recently, however, Scolecenchelys borealis has been treated as a junior synonym of Scolecenchelys aoki, necessitating review of the scientific name S. borealis. This study describes the morphological characteristics of S. aoki based on an adult specimen (TL 230.0 mm) collected from the sea south of Korea and compares its mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA sequence with that of the S. borealis leptocephalus. The adult S. aoki is characterized by several morphological features: vertebral formula 59-55-135; preanal lateral pores 55; infraorbital pores two; teeth on upper jaw visible externally when the mouth is closed; the dorsal fin originates just behind the anus; both jaws and vomerine teeth are conical, arranged in two rows. An analysis of an 886-base paire sequence of the 12S rRNA showed that adult S. aoki was concordant with the S. borealis leptocephalus (sensu Ji et al., 2012), indicating that both are the same species.

Unerupted or erupted supernumerary tooth may cause crowding, diastema, cyst formation, resorption, and displacement or rotation of adjacent teeth. However, there are few studies about prognosis about the pathologic condition and expectation of spontaneous eruption. The object of this study is to evaluate factors predicting the spontaneous eruption of supernumerary tooth. 431 patients (346 males and 85 females, aged from 5 to 29 years) who visited our institution from 2002-2006 and were shown to have 471 mesiodentes was reviewed. Supernumerary teeth were classified inverted and not inverted state. In case of not inverted supernumerary tooth, eruption rate ac cording to length of supernumenary tooth, width of the tooth, angle between the tooth and incisor tooth, location (inside the incisor or not) and shape (conical or tubercle) were investigated. The regression model showed that length, width and angle were all important determinants of influencing the eruption of supernumerary tooth (p < 0.001, Pearson R: 0.619). There is no relation between shape and eruption of supernumerary tooth (p > 0.05). Location of mesiodens has an effect on eruption of supernumerary tooth (p < 0.01).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate on the interfacial morphology between dentin and restorative materials. In this in vitro study, the cavity wall restorated with 3 different kinds of tooth colored restorative materials [resin-modified Glass Ionomer cement (Fuji II LC), composite resin (Z-100), compomer (Dyract)]. The thirty extracted human molar teeth without caries and/or restorations are used. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into three groups of ten teeth each. In each group, Wedge shaped cavities (width: 3mm, length: 2mm, depth: 1.5mm) were prepared at the cementoenamel junction on buccal and lingual surfaces. The adhesive of composite resin were mixed with rhodamine B. Primer of composite resin, Prime & Bond 2.1 of Dyract and liquid of Fuji II LC were mixed with fluorescein. In group 1, the cavity wall was treatment with dentin conditioner, and then restorated with Fuji II LC. In group 2, the cavity wall was treatment with Prime & Bond 2.1 and then restorated with Dyract. In group 3, the cavity wall was etching with 10% maleic acid, applied with primer and bonding agent and then restorated with Z-100. The interface between dentin and restorative materials was observed by fluoresence imaging with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The results were as follows : 1. In Glass ionomer group, adaptation of resin modified Glass-ionomer restoration against cavity wall is tight, but the crack formed inside of restoration were observed. 2. In Dyract group, the penetration of resin tag is shorter and the width of hybrid layer is narrower than composite resin group. 3. In Z-100 group, primer penetrated deeply through dentinal tubule. Also bonding agent was penetrated along the primer, but the penetration length is shorter than primer part, and in 3-D image, the resin tag is conical shape and lateral branch is observed.
Structures of jaw bones, gill rakers and pharyngeal bones of the three Pomadasys species collected from Arafura sea of Indonesia in May 1996 were described and illustrated to compare between species. The percentage of ascending process of premaxillary to head length was 21.6~23.3% in Pomadasys kaakan, 25.4~27.8% in P. maculatus and 15.3~21.0% in P. argyreus. The percentage of ascending process of premaxillary to premaxillary was 54.7~72.8% in P. argyreus, 107.8~114.9% in P. kaakan and 126.7~136.7% in P. maclllatlls. The ascending process of premaxillary of P. argyreus showed a tendency to increase as fish grow. Each jaw in all three grunters had a row of conical teeth exteriorly, but 1 to 5 rows of niddle like teeth interiorly. Among the three species examined, P. maculatus showed the most developed teeth. Pharyngeal bone, appeared to be stronger than jaw teeth, contained dense needle like teeth in P. argyreus, where as that in P. kaakan and P. maculatus had long and slender teeth exteriorly but thicker interiorly. Gill rakers of P. kaakan and P. maculatus are short, but those of P. argyreus are long.
