  • Two species of the unrecorded congrid eel, Ariosoma major (Asano, 1958) and Rhynchoconger ectenurus (Jordan and Richardson, 1909) were collected for the first time from the Southern and Western Sea of Korea. A. major closely resembled A. shiroanago, but differed from the latter in having lesser number of lateral line pores before vent and vertebrae. R. ectenurus was very similar to R. brachuata, but differed from the latter in having slender tail and a great number of vertebrae. A key to the genera and species of the family Congridae from Korea was given. New Korean name "Kunhuin-bungchangeo" was proposed for the A. major, and "Gomunkkori-bungchangeo", R. ectenurus, respectively.

  • A single specimen of Ariosoma meeki, belonging to the family Congridae, was collected for the first time from Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, on June 10, 2015. Ariosoma meeki is characterized by an absence of scales on its whole body, dorsal and anal fin connected to the caudal fin, blackish margins of the dorsal and anal fin, posterior nostrils not covered with a dermal flap, 60 preanal lateral-line pores, 15 pectoral fin rays, no cephalic sensory pore between the interorbital region and dorsal fin origin, and two dark brown dots behind the eyes. We described it as the new Korean record, and proposed the Korean name "nun-te-bung-jang-eo" for this species A. meeki.

Distribution and morphological development of a Gnathophis nystromi (Congridae: Anguilliformes) leptocephalus collected from southeastern waters of Jeju Island (제주도 남동부해역에서 채집된 은붕장어, Gnathophis nystromi (뱀장어목: 붕장어과) 엽상자어의 분포특성 및 형태발달)

  • The twenty six specimens of leptocephali (15.8-32.6 mm TL) of the family Congridae, collected from southeastern waters offshore of Jeju Island during August 2014, and were identified by means of morphology and genetics. Those specimens were identified as belonging to the family Congridae based on various combinations of morphological characters. An analysis of the partial 12S rRNA sequences (886 base pairs) of mitochondrial DNA showed that our specimens must be Gnathophis nystromi, because their sequences were concordant with those of G. nystromi adult (genetic distance= 0.001), furthermore their total myomeres being consistent with those of G. nystromi adult. Catch rates of G. nystromi leptocephali were higher in the offshore regions than coastal regions of Jeju Island. The smallest leptocephali (< 20 mm TL) were collected offshore from Jeju Island. We hypothesize that one of the spawning grounds of G. nystromi is located offshore in the Jeju Island. In conclusion, the hatched preleptocephali of G. nystromi might have been transported from offshore near Jeju Island to the Korea Strait by the Kuroshio Current and Tsushima Warm Current.

  • The taxonomic revision of the family Congridae was made based on the specimens collected from the south-western coasts of the Korea from June 1988 to Oct. 1993. The family Congridae was classified into 8 species belonging to 6 genera. based on the external and internal morphological characters : Anago anago, Ariosoma anagodies, Ariosoma shiroanago shiroanago, Conger myriaster, Conger japonicus, Gnathophis nystromi nystromi, Rhechias retrotincta and Uroconger lepturus. Among the species reported as the congrid eels from Korea until now, four species were transferred into different generic or specific name Conger flavirostris into Ariosoma anagoides ; Astroconger myriaster into Conger myriaster ; Congrina retrotincta into Rhechias retrotincta and Rhynchocymba nystromi into Gnathophis nystromi nystromi. A Korean congrid eel, Ariosoma shiroanago shiroanago, was reported for first time in Korea. Intergeneric characters of the family Congridae were the form of the lateralline scales, the state of the tip of tail, the segmented state of the dorsal and anal fin rays, the existance of the supraoccipital bone and of lateral ethmoid process of the skull, the origin of dorsal fin and the forms of upper labial flange. The interspecific classification was made according to the characters such as the numbers of sensory pores of head part and in front of vent, teeth rows and numbers of upper and lower jaw, the numbers of vertebrae, the body color, the shapes of the head part, the color of intestine, the size of eye, the structure of air bladder and the number of branchiostegal rays. A new key on the taxonomical characteristics to the genera and species of the family Congridae has been estabilished and their distribution in Korea is described.
