  • Two-dimensional, angle-resolved LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements of the turbulent rotating flow field in a confined cylinder have been performed. The configurations of interest are flows between a rotating upper disk with a rod attached by a disk or impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$) and a stationary lower disk in a confined cylinder. The mean flow velocity as well as the turbulent intensity of the flow field have been measured. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the position of the impellers or the disk, negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that the mixing effect of the axial flow impeller(${\theta}= 45^{\circ}$) is better than that of the radial flow impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ}$) or a disk.

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat wall in a confined plenum are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. A confined plenum was designed for simulating the missile launch and analyzing the behavior of the exhaust plume, which were accompanied by complex flow interactions with shock and boundary layer. Concerns of this paper are to show accurate simulation of internal flow in confined plenum and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a small opening on the side. Objectives of this numerical simulation are to understand the effect of changing the plume exit area of the plenum. Pressure and temperature rise at certain position in the plenum are traced and compared with test data.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of confined jet flow within circular pipe. Numerical method based upon revised SOLA scheme which secures conservation form of convective terms on irregular grids by interpolating the variables appearing in staggered meshes is adopted on cylindrical coordinate formation. Computation was carried out for two kinds of Reynolds number, $10^5\;and\;1.5{\times}10^5$ defined by diameter of outer pipe and time-mean driving jet velocity. Results show that periodic vortex shedding from the jet mixing layer is profound and related unsteady flow characteristics prevail over the entire region. Spatial distribution of pressure and kinetic energy, fluctuation of static wall pressure, together with radial velocity components are examined in terms of instantaneous and time-mean point of views.

  • The flow characteristics in a confined slot jet impinging on a flat plate were investigated by using cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The three different kinds of confined slot were applied to the jet with a view to evaluating the shape effect and the jet Reynolds number was varied from 250 to 1000 for a fixed jet-to-plate spacing of H/W=5. It was found that the vortex structures in the shear layer are developed with increase of Reynolds number and that the jet becomes unsteady by the interaction of vortex pairs between 500 and 750 of Reynolds number. Finally, the slot shape was proved to be related with the generation timing of vortex pair and the temporal vortex structure.

  • A series of experiment has been performed on the spray characteristics in a cylindrical confined space with the injection pressure taken as a parameter. By using a single-hole patternator and the Malvern particle sizer, the spray mass flux, drop size and volume concentration distributions along the radial and axial directions were obtained ; the line-of- sight data by Malvern particle sizer have been converted to the ring-of-sight data by using the tomographical transformation techniqe. The experimental results show that, due to the restriction on the ambient gas entrainment by the wall boundary, the effective spray angle is increasing. The spray drops were measured to be smaller in the confined space because of a large number of floating small drops by recirculation of the gas phase and the breakup of large drops by the wall collision. Also the details on the flow behavior of the confined spray are discussed.

  • The orientation and deformation of polymer chains in a confined channel flow has been investigated. The polymer chain was modeled as a Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) dumbbell. The Brownian configuration field method was extended to take the interaction between the flow and local chain dynamics into account. Drag and Brownian forces were treated as anisotropic in order to reflect the influence of the wall in the confined flow. Both Poiseuille flow and 4 : 1 contraction flow were considered. Of particular interest was molecular tumbling of polymer chains near the wall. It was strongly influenced by anisotropic drag and high shear close to the wall. We discussed the mechanism of this particular behavior in terms of the governing forces. The dumbbell configuration was determined not only by the wall interaction but also by the flow type of the geometric origin. The effect of extensional flow on dumbbell configuration was also discussed by comparing with the Poiseuille flow.

  • Tunnelling in a water bearing soil may cause draw-down of ground water table. Modelling of this problem requires considering the change of phreatic surface including the stress constitutive relationship for an unsaturated soil. However, it is normally assumed that ground water is confined. Numerical formulation of coupled behavior considering phreatic surface is described and implemented into computer program. Influence of unconfined flow on tunnel and ground is thoroughly investigated and compared with that of confined flow condition. It is identified that ground and lining behaviour below phreatic surface is almost the same as that under confined flow conditions, however, there is considerable difference in ground behaviour above phreatic surface. It is generally concluded that the assumption of confined flow is acceptable in terms of lining design.

  • The effect of molecular parameters on the steady vortex behaviors in the inertial viscoelastic flow past a cylinder has been investigated. FENE-CR model was considered as a constitutive equation. A recently developed iterative solution method (Kim et al., (in press)) was found to be successfully applicable to the computation of inertial viscoelastic flows. The high-resolution computations were carried out to understand the detailed flow behaviors based on the efficient iterative solution method armed with ILU(0) type pre-conditioner and BiCGSTAB method. The discrete elastic viscous split stress-G/streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (DEVSS-G/SUPG) formulation was adopted as a stabilization method. The vortex size decreased as elasticity increases. However, the vortex enhancement was also observed in the case of large extensibility, which means that the vortex behavior is strongly dependent upon the material parameters. The longitudinal gradient of normal stress was found to retard the formation of vortex, whereas the extensional viscosity played a role in the vortex enhancement. The present results are expected to be helpful for understanding the inertial vortex dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in the flow past a confined cylinder.

  • In this paper, confined multiple slot jet impingement with exhaust ports is investigated numerically. A flow cell, defined as volume sectioned by the impingement and confinement surfaces and the centerlines of adjacent nozzle and exhaust port, is chosen for computational domain. The effects of Reynolds number and geometrical parameters on the heat transfer performance and the flow characteristics are studied. For turbulence, the Abe-Kondoh-Nagano version of the low-Reynolds k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed. The results showed that the local Nusselt number distribution is shifted down and show poor heat transfer performance for small Reynolds number and small ratio of the lateral and axial length of flow cell. The rest of range, except the range of the shift phenomenon, can be classified into three groups by heat transfer characteristics.
