  • Laboratory evaluation of the effect of fines, confine stress and dry density on the permeability characteristics in sand columns is presented. The triaxial permeability tests were conducted on different contents of fines(5, 15, 25, $35{\%}$), confine stress ($\sigma_3^'=0.5,\;1.0,\;2.0,\;3.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$), and dry density($\gamma_d=1.50,\;1.55,\;1.60,\;1.65{\cal}g{\cal}cm^3$). The results of triaxial permeability tests showed that as the contents of fines, confine stress and dry density became increase permeability became decrease. For the contents of fines, when the fines that smaller than $0.01{\cal}mm$ increases the permeability decreases significantly. For the confine stress and the dry density, the permeability is decreased significantly at changes of the confine stress($\sigma_3^'=0.5{\~}1.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$) and the dry density($\gamma_d=1.50{\~}1.55{\cal}g/{\cal}cm^3$) at lower levels.

  • The axial compressive strength of unidirectional FRP is generally quite lower than its axial tensile strength. This fact decreases the advantages of FRP as main load bearing member in engineering structure. In order to restrain the lateral expansion and splitting of GFRP, and accordingly heighten its axial compressive bearing capacity, a project that to confine GFRP pole with surrounding CFRP sheet is suggested in the present study. The Experiment on the CFRP sheet confined GFRP poles showed that a combined structure of high bearing capacity was attained. Basing on the experiment research a theoretical iterative calculation approach is suggested to predict the ultimate axial compressive stress of the combined structure, and the predicted results agree well with the experimental results. Then the influences of geometrical parameters on the ultimate axial compressive stress of the combined structure are also analyzed basing on this approach.

  • In this study, the effect of laser shock peening on a titanium alloy was modeled using different confinements. Both liquid and solid confinement could be applied to laser shock peening, and solid confinement provided a dry laser shock peening process, which has the advantage of a corrosion-free effect. When a different confinement was applied to laser shock peening, a different peening effect would be expected. In our study, the peening effect was numerically modeled and simulated. The main effect of different confinements was a change in the impedances required to confine a shock wave from a plasma. The impedances were assumed with respect to different materials. Johnson-Cook's plastic deformation modeling was applied to the simulation. The strains and residual stresses were calculated to evaluate the confinement effects. When solid confinement was used, the residual stress increased by 60-85%, compared to the case of liquid confinement. However, the depth of the residual stress was slightly deeper. The simulated results could be applied to estimate the peening effect when a different confinement was used in the laser shock peening process.

  • Extensive research has been conducted on the basic mechanical property and structural applications of engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Despite the high tensile ductility and high toughness of ECC, transverse steel reinforcement is still necessary to confine ECC for high performance. However, limited research has examined performance of ECC confined with practical amount of transverse reinforcement. This paper presents the results of axial compression tests on 14 square ECC columns and 4 conventional concrete columns (used as control specimens) with transverse reinforcement. The test variables were spacing, configuration (square ties or square and diamond shape ties), and yield strength of stirrups. The test showed that ECC columns confined with steel stirrup had good compressive ductility, and the stirrup spacing had the greatest effect on the compressive performance. The self-confinement effect of ECC results in a more uniform but slower expansion of the whole column compared with CC ones. The test results are then compared against the predictions from a number of existing models for conventional confined concrete. It is indicated that these models fail to predict the axial strains at peak axial stress and the trend of the stress-strain curve of steel stirrups-confined ECC with sufficient accuracy. Several new equations are then proposed for the compressive properties of steel-confined ECC based on test results and potential approaches for future studies are proposed.

  • Particle-particle interaction is of great importance in the study of suspension rheology. In this research we have investigated the hydrodynamic interaction between two identical cylinders in viscoelastic fluids numerically as a model problem for the study of viscoelastic suspension. We confine two neutrally buoyant cylinders between two parallel plates and impose a shear flow. We determine the migration velocity of two cylinders. The result shows that cylinders move toward or away from each other depending upon the initial distance between them and that there is an equilibrium distance between two cylinders in viscoelastic fluids regardless of the initial distance. In the case of Newtonian fluid, there is no relative movement as expected. The results partly explain the chaining phenomena of spherical particles in shear flows of viscoelastic fluids.

  • The lateral reinforcements of concrete such as hoops and spiral bars are known to confine concrete to compensate the strength loss due to fire by reducing explosive spalling and improving the capacity of ductility. In this context, a study was conducted to investigate the residual mechanical properties of confined and unconfined concrete($f_{ck}$=60MPa) after a single thermal cycle at 300, 600, $800^{\circ}C$. The main parameters required to establish the stress-strain relationship are the peak stress, the elastic modulus, and the strain at peak stress. The knowledge of the residual mechanical properties of concrete is necessary whenever the thermally damaged structure is required to bear a significant share of the loads, even after a severe thermal accident. Based on the results obtained in this study, the residual stress of confined concrete under thermal damage is higher according to the level of confinement and the larger strain made it to have better ductility. The decreasing ratio of elastic modulus from the relationship of stress and strain was also smaller than that of unconfined concrete.

  • Wall jet flow exists widely in engineering applications, including the simulation of thunderstorm downburst outflows, and has been investigated extensively by both experimental and numerical methods. Most previous studies focused on the scaling laws and self-similarity, while the effect of lip thickness and external stream height on mean velocity has not been examined in detail. The present work is a numerical study, using steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations at a Reynolds number of $3.5{\times}10^4$, of a turbulent plane wall jet with an external stream to investigate the influence of the wall jet domain on downstream development of the flow. The comparisons of flow characteristics simulated by the Reynolds stress turbulence model closure (Stress-omega, SWRSM) and experimental results indicate that this model may be considered reasonable for simulating the wall jet. The confined wall jet is further analyzed in a parametric study, with the results compared to the experimental data. The results indicate that the height and the width of the wind tunnel and the lip thickness of the jet nozzle have a great effect on the wall jet development. The top plate of the tunnel does not confine the development of the wall jet within 200b of the nozzle when the height of the tunnel is more than 40b (b is the height of jet nozzle). The features of the centerline flow in the mid plane of the 3D numerical model are close to those of the 2D simulated plane wall jet when the width of the tunnel is more than 20b.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) beam-column joints and to examine the structural performance of the proposed joints, which simplify the construction procedure of steel fabrication, welding works, concrete casting and joint strengthening. In the proposed beam-column joints, the steel element of columns forms continuously built-in crossing of H-sections (${\Box}$), with adjacent flanges of column being connected by horizontal stiffeners in a joint at the level of the beam flanges. In addition, simplified lateral reinforcement (${\Box}$) is adopted in a joint to confine the longitudinal reinforcing bars in columns. Experimental and analytical studies have been carried out to estimate the structural performance of the proposed joints. Twelve cruciform specimens and seven SRC beam-column subassemblage specimens were prepared and tested. The following can be concluded from this study: (1) SRC subassemblages with the proposed beam-column joints show adequate seismic performances which are superior to the demand of the current code; (2) The yield and ultimate strength capacities of the beam-to-column connections can be estimated by analysis based on the yield line theory; (3) The skeleton curves and the ultimate shear capacities of the beam-column joint panel are predicted with a fair degree of accuracy by considering a simple stress transfer mechanism.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the variables affected the confinement for the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The structural performance of T-shaped walls was advanced by the transverse reinforcement which restrained the concrete subjected to compressive stress. If the arrangement of transverse reinforcement was not suitable for the confinement, T-shaped walls happened the brittle failure by web crushing or bucking of vertical reinforcement at the compression zone. It is necessary to confine transverse reinforcement in order to prevent the these failure. But the location of neutral axis and the magnitude of ultimate strain vary according to the section shape, a ratio of axial load, a ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, an aspect ratio and the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, the objective of this research is to grasp the location of neutral axis and the range which needs for the confinement of transverse reinforcement through the results of the sectional analysis which varies the ratio of axial load and the ratio of vertical reinforcement.
