  • In micro-drilling of brittle materials including glass, cracks occur at the exit surface. In drilling glass, the main type of crack is cone crack. Cone crack is generated by thrust force acting at the bottom surface of the workpiece. Cone crack size could be reduced by changing cutting conditions, but cone crack still existed. Two methods were proposed to prevent crack formation and perfect hole shapes were obtained. One method is attaching two glass plates with water and the other method is constraining two glass plates. The proposed methods eliminated tensile stress acting on the exit surface of glass and prevented crack propagation.

  • Effects of particle property variation of cone crack shape according to impact velocity in silicon carbide materials were investigated. The damage induced by spherical impact having different material and size was different according to materials. The size of ring cracks induced on the surface of specimen increased with increase of impact velocity within elastic contact conditions. The impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In case of high impact velocity, the impact of SiC particle produced radial cracks by the elastic-plastic deformation at impact regions. Also percussion cone was formed from the back surface of specimen when particle size become large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. Increasing impact velocity, zenithal angle of cone cracks in SiC material was linearly decreasing not effect of impact particle size. An empirical equation, $\theta=\theta_{st}-\upsilon_p(180-\theta_{st})(\rho_p/\rho_s)^{1/2}/415$, was obtained from the test data as a function of quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack($\theta_{st}$), the density of impact particle(${\rho}_p$) and specimen(${\rho}_s$). Applying this equation to the another materials, the variation of zenithal angle of cone crack could be predicted from the particle impact velocity.

  • A quantitative study of impact damage of a soda-lime glass was carried out. An initiation and a propagation of cracks by the impact of two inds of steel ball was investigated. The fron, side and rear view of cracks were observed by a stereo-microscope. And the lowering of the benidng strength due to the impact of steel balls was examined through the 4-point bending test. A transparent glass is very helpful to understand and analyze the impact damage behavior of another brittle matereial. A deagdram about crack patterns according to the threshold impact velocity was sketched. A ring crack and a cone crack were formed at the low impact velocity. And as the impact velocity was higher, initial lateral crack was generated on the slanting surface of cone crack, and radial cracks were generated from the outermost ring crack. When the impact velocity of steel balls exceed a critical velocity, the contact site of specimens were crushed. According to the propagation of a cone crack, a rapid strength degradation occurred. In the specimen having crushed region, a bending strength was converged to a constant value instead of strength degradation.

  • Damage behaviors induced in silicon carbide by an impact of particle having different material and size were investigated. Especially, the influence of the impact velocity of particle on the cone crack shape developed was mainly discussed. The damage induced by spherical impact was different depending on the material and size of particles. Ring cracks on the surface of specimen were multiplied by increasing the impact velocity of particle. The steel particle impact produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In the case of high velocity impact of SiC particle, radial cracks were produced due to the inelastic deformation at the impact site. In the case of the larger particle impact, the damage morphology developed was similar to the case of smaller particle one, but a percussion cone was farmed from the back surface of specimen when the impact velocity exceeded a critical value. The zenithal angle of cone cracks developed into SiC material decreased monotonically with increasing of the particle impact velocity. The size and material of particle influenced more or less on the extent of cone crack shape. An empirical equation, $\theta$= $\theta$$\sub$st/, v$\sub$p/(90-$\theta$$\sub$st/)/500 R$\^$0.3/($\rho$$_1$/$\rho$$_2$)$\^$$\frac{1}{2}$/, was obtained as a function of impact velocity of the particle, based on the quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack. It is expected that the empirical equation will be helpful to the computational simulation of residual strength in ceramic components damaged by the particle impact.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of processing of brittle material by ball impact, the effects of boundary conditions about impact damage of soda-lime glass by small spheres were evaluated experimentally. It was investigated that crack appearance developed in soda-lime glass with boundary conditions of without sealing, single-sealing and double-sealing by impact velocity. The double-sealing was most effective in the development of perfect cone than other boundary condition. In case of double-sealing condition, PVC and Polyurethane sealing were more effective in producing a perfect cone formation than other sealing materials. The impact velocity range over which perfect cones were formed was influenced by both the contact area and diameter of impact particle.

  • Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of punching process of brittle material by ball impact, the effects of sealing materials about impact damage of soda-lime glass by small spheres were evaluated experimentally. The using of sealing materials in the development of perfect cone crack was more effective than no using of sealing materials. At the sealing materials condition, in the case of 5mm-thick specimen, Copper and PMMA sealing were more effective in producing a perfect cone formation than the other sealing materials. And in the case of 8mm-thick specimen, Aluminum sealing was most effective in producing a perfect cone formation. The impact velocity range over which perfect cones were formed was influenced by both the thickness of specimen and sealing materials. By a proper selection of sealing materials, the application fur industrial technology for hole (or nozzle) punching process of brittle materials is expected.

  • Brittle materials are very weak for impact because of typical characteristics which happen to be easily fractured with low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact due to small spheres, high contact pressure is occurred to impact surface and then local damage on specimen is developed, since there are little plastic deformations due to contact pressure compared to metals. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda lime glass by impact of small sphere is explained and the effects of the constraint conditions of impact spheres and materials for the material damage were studied by using soda-lime glass. that is the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength. • An ultrasonic technique using normal-incident compressional waves was used to evaluate the surface and subsurface damage in ceramics produced by Hertzian indentation. Damage was produced by a blunt indenter (tungsten carbide ball) in glass-ceramic, green glass and silicon nitride. The damage was classified into two types; (1) Hertzian cone crack, in green glass and fine grain silicon nitride, and (2) distributed subsurface micro fractures, without surface damage, produced in glass ceramic. The ultrasonic technique was successful in detecting cone craks. The measurement results with the Hertzian cone cracks indicated that cracks perpendicular to the surface could be detected by the normal-incident compressional waws. Also shown is the capability of normal-incident compressional waves in detection distributed micro-sized cracks size of subsurface microfractures.
