Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have received a lot of attention as a power source for both stationary and mobile applications due to their attractive feature. In general, the performance of PEFCs is highly affected by the property of the electrodes. A PEFC electrode essentially consists of a gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer. The gas difusion layer is highly porous and hydrophobicized with PTFE polymer. The catalyst layer usually contains electrocatalyst, proton conducting polymer, even PTFE as additive. Particularly, the proton conducting ionomer helps to increase the catalytic activity at three-phase boundary and catalyst utilization. Futhermore, it helps to retain moisture, resulting in preventing the electrodes from membrane dehydration. The most widely used proton conducting ionomer is perfluorinated sulfonic acid polymer, namely, Nafion from DuPont due to its high proton conductivity and good mechanical property. However, there are great demands for alternative ionomers based on non-fluorinated materials in terms of high temperature availability, environmental adaptability and production cost. In this study, the electrodes with the various content of the sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) ionomer in the catalyst layer were prepared. In addition, we evaluated electrochemical properties of the prepared electrodes containing the various amount of the ionomers by using the cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy to find an optimal ionomer composition in the catalyst layer.
In this study, we fabricated chemically polymerized PPy and PANi films with different selectivity by controlling dedoping time. And the sensing properties and mechanism of VOCs adsorption to conducting polymers were investigated. Thin sensor had higher sensitivity compared to thick one, and dedoped sensor for 1-minute highest sensitivity. Upon gas absorption, polypyrrole exhibited positive sensitivity while polyaniline had negative sensitivity. PPy film show hydrophilic property and PANi film show hydrophobic property. After the gas absorption, the sensitivity increased as a function of polarity of absorbed molecules. These behaviors are due to the polar molecules absorbed with the movable polaron or free carrier, and then it interrupt or generate the movement of polaron and carrier, and then it changes the conductivity of polymer. We found that conducting polymer sensors are very sensitive to the difference in polarity of gas molecules.
The stealth technology can increase the survivability of aircrafts or warships and enhance the capability of mission completion in hostile territory. The purpose of this paper is to present the low observable structure with curved surfaces made by fiber-reinforced composites and to show the possibility of developing omnidirectional stealth platforms for military applications. In this study, we developed a radar absorbing structures(RAS) based on a circuit analog absorber to reduce the radar cross section(RCS) of an object with curved surfaces. Firstly, the RAS with a periodic square patterned conducting polymer layer was designed and simulated using a commercial 3-D electromagnetic field analysis program. Secondly, the designed semi-cylindrical structure with low RCS was fabricated using fiber-reinforced composites and conducting polymer. To make the periodic pattern layer, acts as resistive sheet, the intrinsic conducting polymer paste containing PEDOT with a polyurethane binder was used. Finally, the radar cross section was measured to evaluate the radar absorbing performances of the fabricated RAS by the compact range facility in POSTECH.

The effect of physicochemical properties of solvents on the microstructure of polyvinyl carbazole (PVK) film for non-volatile polymer memory was investigated. For the solubilization of PVK molecules and the preparation of PVK films, four solvents with different physicochemical properties of the Hildebrand solubility parameter and vapor pressure were considered: chloroform, tetrahydrofuran (THF), 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE), and N,N-dimehtylformamide (DMF). The solubility of PVK molecules in the solvents was observed by ultravioletvisible spectroscopy. PVK molecules were observed to be more soluble in chloroform, with a low Hildebrand solubility parameter, than solvents with higher values. The aggregated size and micro-/nano-topographical properties of PVK films were characterized using optical and atomic force microscopes. The PVK film cast from chloroform exhibited enhanced surface roughness compared to that from TCE and DMF. It was also confirmed that the microstructure of PVK film has an effect on the performance of non-volatile polymer memory.
Poly(benzimidazole-co-aniline) (PBIANI), a self-crosslinked, net-structured, proton conducting polymer has been synthesized for the membrane of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) with improved proton conductivity and mechanical strength. The stress at break (26$\pm$3MPa)and proton conductivity (167 mS cm-1)of the phosphoric acid doped PBIANI (DPBIANI)membrane is much higher than those of other doped polybenzimidazole(PBI) type membranes.
Imogolite which has chemical composition, $(HO)_3Al_2O_3SiOH$, was synthesized with orthosilicate acid and aluminium chloride at low pH solution. It has extremely large aspect ratio with an external diameter of 2nm and the length of a few micrometers. The high aspect ratio of the imogolite could make the material as the filler for the high strength fiber and as the wire for the electronic applications. Here, Imogolite that derives considerable microporosity from a nanometer-sized tubular structure has been modified with a conducting polymer, polypyrrole. Its bonding and wiring structure were confirmed by IR and TEM. The measured conductivity after modification with polypyrrole increased with polypyrrole thickness at various voltage conditions.

The composites composed of conducting polymer (MEH-PPV), CdTe nanoparticles, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were spectroscopically and electrically characterized in their thin films. The composite films were prepared by spray coating. These composites were prepared from the mixture solution of MEH-PPV and CdTe-embedded MWNTs, in which CdTe nanoparticles were electrostatically bound to MWNTs. UV/vis and PL spectra were analyzed to investigate the optical absorbance and emission of the composite films. In addition, their structural, electrochemical, and electrical properties were studied by transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and I-V measurement.
We investigated a new method for patterning organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using a photopatternable conducting polymer nanocomposite, consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that had been modified with a photoreactive cinnamate group, to form P3HT-AuNP-CI. We found that the addition of the cinnamate group to the nanoparticle surface assisted the preparation of a solvent-resistive semiconducting film and preserved the P3HT ordering, which was interrupted by Au-P3HT interactions, as well as provided UV-controllable electrical properties. The P3HT-AuNPs-CI films could be microscale-patterned via a UV crosslinking photoreaction, represented as a promising photopatternable semiconductor material for use in advanced applications, with tunable electrical properties for fabrication of sub-micron and microscale electronic devices.
The conducting polymer composites were prepared by imbibing the porous particle wish the $FeCl_3$ oxidant solution, drying the imbibed porous particle, and imbibing again with pyrrole solution for polymerization to take place in the pore of porous particles. The effect of synthesis conditions on the conductivity of composite polymers were investigated. It was found that the conductivity of composite polymers was dependant on the concentration of pyrrole monomer, nature of the oxidants and solvents used for the oxidant and pyrrole, which influence the degree of penetration/distribution of polyprrole in the composite and reaction of dopant with pyrrole.
