  • As the global warming becomes a serious environmental problem, studies of reducing $CO_2$ emission in power generation area are in progress all over the world. One of the carbon capture and storage(CCS) technologies is known as oxy-fuel combustion power generation system. In the oxy-fuel combustion system, the exhaust gas is mainly composed of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Thus, high-purity $CO_2$ can be obtained after a proper $H_2O$ removal process. In this paper, an oxy-fuel combustion cycle that recovers the waste heat of a high-temperature fuel cell is analyzed thermodynamically. Variations of characteristics of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ mixture which is extracted from the condenser and power consumption required to obtain highly-pure $CO_2$ gas were examined according to the variation of the condensing pressure. The influence of the number of compression stages on the power consumption of the $CO_2$ capture process was analyzed, and the overall system performance was also investigated.

  • A novel design process of a parallel multi-flow type air-cooled condenser of a dual-loop waste heat recovery system with Rankine steam cycles for improving the fuel efficiency of gasoline automobiles has been investigated focusing on reduction of the pressure drop inside the micro-tubes. The low temperature condenser plays a role to dissipate heat from the system by condensing the low temperature loop working fluid sufficiently. However, the refrigerant has low evaporation temperature enough to recover the waste from engine coolant of about $100^{\circ}C$ but has small saturation enthalpy so that excessive mass flow rate of the LT working fluid, e.g., over 150 g/s, causes enormously large pressure drop of the working fluid to maintain the heat dissipation performance of more than 20 kW. This paper has dealt with the scheme to design the low temperature condenser that has reduced pressure drop while ensuring the required thermal performance. The number of pass, the arrangement of the tubes of each pass, and the positions of the inlet and outlet ports on the header are most critical parameters affecting the flow uniformity through all the tubes of the condenser. For the purpose of the performance predictions and the parametric study for the LT condenser, we have developed a 1-dimensional user-friendly performance prediction program that calculates feasibly the phase change of the working fluid in the tubes. An example is presented through the proposed design process and compared with an experiment.

  • In the design of advanced light water reactors (ALWRs) and in the safety assessment of currently operating nuclear power plants, it is necessary to evaluate the possibility of experiencing a degraded core accident and to develop innovative safety technologies in order to assure long-term debris cooling. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the enhancement factors of dryout heat flux in debris beds by coolant injection from below. The experimental facility consists mainly of an induction heater, a double-wall quartz-tube test section containing a steel-particle bed and coolant injection and recovery condensing loop. A fairly uniform heating of the particle bed was achieved in the radial direction and the axial variation was within 20%. This paper reports the experimental data for 3.2 mm and 4.8 mm particle beds with a 300 mm bed height. The dryout heat density data were obtained for both the top-flooding and the forced coolant injection from below with an injection mass flux of up to $1.5\;kg/m^2s$. The dryout heat density increased as the rate of coolant injection increased. At a coolant injection mass flux of $1.0\;kg/m^2s$, the dryout heat density was ${\sim}6.5\;MW/m^3$ for the 4.8 mm particle bed and ${\sim}5.6\;MW/m^3$ for the 3.2 mm particle bed. The enhancement factors of the dryout heat density were 1.6-1.8.

  • The co-generation system consisted of gas a turbine, a steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator and a heat exchangers for district heating was investigated in the present study. A back-pressure steam turbine (non-condensing type) was used. A partial load analysis according to the outdoor temperature in winter was conducted and optimal thermal load and power conditions was examined using the commercial computing software Thermoflex. As a result, under a constant thermal load, the power outputs of gas turbine and overall system increased as an outdoor temperature decreased. On the other hand, the reduction in exhaust gas temperature led to the decrease in output of steam turbine. Considering the portion of gas turbine in overall system in terms of the power output, it can be known that the tendency in power output of overall system was similar to that of the gas turbine.

  • This study aims to develop an analysis model using a commercial process simulator-ASPEN PLUS for an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system consisting a dry coal feeding, oxygen-blown entrained gasification process by Shell, a low temperature gas clean up process, a General Electric MS7001FA gas turbine, a three pressure, natural recirculation heat recovery steam generator, a regenerative, condensing steam turbine and a cryogenic air separation unit. The comparison between those results of this study and reference one done by other engineer at design conditions shows consistency which means the soundness of this model. The greater moisture contents in Illinois#6 coal causes decreasing gasifier temperature and the greater ash and sulfur content hurt system efficiency due to increased heat loss. As the results of sensitivity analysis using developed model for the parameters of gasifier operating pressure, steam/coal ratio and oxygen/coal ratio, the gasifier temperature increases while combustible gases (CO+H2) decreases throughout the pressure going up. In the steam/coal ratio analysis, when the feeding steam increases the maximum combustible gas generation point moves to lower oxygen/coal ratio feeding condition. Finally, for the oxygen/coal ratio analysis, it shows oxygen/coal ratio 0.77 as a optimum operating condition at steam/coal feeding ratio 0.2.
