  • In this study, the heat transfer and flow field of condenser used on Kim-chi refrigerator is analysed with numerical method. Main objective is to present the base data for designing new condenser model with improvement of heat transfer performance. For CFD analysis, a commercial code, STAR-CCM+ was used. The water was used for the inner working fluid and the air was used for the outer fluid. The condenser type used in this study is a flat plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger. As factors for performance analysis, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.

  • In this study, We evaluated the Performance of PFC and the system performance of large size air-conditioner applying to outdoor condenser. PFC can meet the same cooling capacity in 40.42% of volume to fin-tube condenser. Although the fin-tube condenser requires 3600g of refrigerant charging, PFC requires 1700g, 1800g, 1900g, 2000g refrigerant charging for each 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm and 3.5mm fin pitches. Difference of condensing and evaporation pressure is the biggest point 2.0mm fin pitch and the smallest point 2.5mm fin pitch.

Heat Transfer Characteristics for Internally Triangular finned Rotating Heat Pipes (내부(內部)에 삼각형(三角形) 핀이 부착(附着)된 회전형(回轉型) 히이트파이프의 전열특성(傳熱特性))

  • Heat transfer rate and heat flux from the condenser with internally triangular fins rotating heat pipe has been numerically studied by finite element method. The results of numerical and P.J. Martos' experimental showed good agreement and it was able to predict to the performance of a rotating heat pipe. By increasing fin half angle or fin height, heat transfer rate from condenser was increased slightly but heat flux was decreased. By increasing condenser radius or r.p.m. of rotating heat pipe, heat transfer rate and heat flux was increased rapidly. Heat transfer rate was rapidly increased with increasing fin numbers in case of few fm numbers but slowly increased at many fin numbers. So the optimum fin numbers were a half of maximum fin numbers which was able to install in the condenser of a rotating heat pipe.

  • Fin-tube type(Fin-type) heat exchanger has been tested in order to replace the heat exchanger of parallel flow type(P.F -type) which is now widly used in automobile air conditioning system The following conclusions are drawn by the comparison of the characteristics of the heat exchangers. Evaporator and condenser capacities and COP(Coefficience of performance) were varied as with the compressor speed, outdoor air temperature and air flow rate changed, which much influenced on the characteristics of the air conditioning system Evaporator and condenser capacities were increased with increasing compressor speed and outdoor air temperature. Evaporator and condenser pressures of Fin-type were decreased by 7% and 5% respectively compared with those of P.F-type. The COP of Fin-type was decreased with increasing outdoor air temperature and compressor speed. The COP of P.F-type was decreased by 14% compared with that of Fin-type.

  • A plate-fin tube type heat exchanger has a lighter weight, approximately 30%, than the conventional circular-fin type condenser of household refrigerator. Because the low weight means low cost, it can have significant effects on the growth of related businesses if similar performance can be guaranteed. To check the possibility of the use of such a plate fin-tube condenser, experimental evaluations were performed in this study. Four different condensers including a conventional circular fin-tube condenser were used for the test. A well designed refrigerant supply system was used to supply similar conditions with a refrigerator, and the heat transfer rate and pressure drops of air side were measured precisely. As a result, the plate fin-tube type condensers showed a lower heat transfer rate of more than 13% than the conventional circular fin-tube type condenser, but the air side pressure drop was reduced and the heat transfer per unit weight was increased. Therefore, it shows the possibility of the use of a plate fin-tube type condenser after optimizing the air flow path and increasing the air flow to make a similar heat transfer rate.

Characteristics of Fin-Side Heat-Transfer and Pressure Drop in a Condenser for Automobile (자동차용 응축기의 휜 열전달 및 압력강하 특성)

  • An experimental study was performed to determine the fin-side heat transfer and pressure drop of a condenser for automobile. Five sample with different fin height and louver angle were tested, 9mm, 8mm, 7.5mm, 5.4mm and 4.5mm. Results are presented as plot of Colburn j-factor(or heat transfer coefficients) and friction factor(or pressure drop) against the Reynolds number(or inlet air velocity) based on louver pitch, in the range of 110 to 480. The results show that both heat transfer and pressure drop on the fin are mainly affected by the louver angle in a lower range of air velocity, but, by the fin height in a higher range of air velocity. The performance of 5.4mm fin is the highest, compared to other fin sample.

As analysis parameters, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. For validation of the numerical calculations, the results were compared with the experimental ones. The heat transfer rates for both results were consistent with each other by maximum 5 % error. Based on this comparison, the numerical analysis was done with some modifications. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.

Performance Evaluation of a Parallel Flow Condenser for Automotive Air Conditioners (자동차 에어컨용 평행류 응축기의 성능평가)

  • The new shape of louver-fin has been applied to a parallel flow condenser to enhance air-side heat transfer rate lot an automotive air-conditioner R- l34a is employed as a refrigerant inside the flat tube of the condenser, This problem is of particular interest in reducing the geometric size of the automotive air conditioner The effect of air flow rate on pressure drop as well as heat transfer in air side are studied in detail. Comparison of the performance is also made with that of a conventional parallel flow condenser, which is available in the market. The results obtained indicate that the total pressure drop through the pre sent condenser is not changed, while the heat transfer rate is increased by 24% at high veto city of air flow, compared with those of the conventional condenser. The parallel flow condenser with a new shape of louver-fin could be reduced in size by 20% for the equivalent condenser capacity, compared with the conventional parallel flow condenser.

Numerical Study on the Performance of a Fin-and-Tube Condenser with Non-Uniform Air Distribution and Different Tube Types (불균일 공기분포와 관의 종류에 따른 핀-관 응축기의 성능 특성에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • A numerical study was performed to predict the performance of a fin-and-tube condenser. A condenser model was developed and verified by comparing the simulation results with experimental data for a R410A condenser in a residential air-conditioning system. The prediction error was 0.07% and -5.77% for the condenser capacity and pressure drop, respectively. In simulation results, the capacity and pressure drop of the condenser with even air velocity distribution were 0.67% and 12.93% higher than those with uneven distribution of air velocity. It was predicted by the model that the refrigerant distribution at the condenser inlet to the two first passes was not significantly influenced by the air distribution. The simulation results presented that the 1.49% of capacity and 64.6% of pressure drop were reduced by replacing helical microfin tubes with smooth tubes for the condenser.

Evaluation of Performance of a Residential Air-Conditioning System Using Microchannel and Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchanger (마이크로채널과 핀 튜브 열교환기를 적용한 가정용 에어컨디셔너의 성능 평가)

  • In this study the seasonal performance of a residential air conditioning system having either a fin-and-tube condenser or a microchannel condenser is experimentally investigated. A commercially available 7 kW capacity residential air conditioning system having a fin-and-tube condenser served as the base system. The test results show that the system with a microchannel heat exchanger has a reduced refrigerant charge amount of 10%, the coefficient of performance is increased by 6% to 10%, and the SEER is increased by 7% as compared with those of the base system. Moreover, the condensing pressure of the system is decreased by 100 kPa and the pressure drop across the condenser is decreased by 84%. The microchannel heat exchanger enhances the SEER of the residential air conditioning system by providing better heat transfers at reduced pressure drops.
