In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of CFC-11, HCFC-123 and HCFC-141b are measured, which are used/or considered as working fluids in centrifugal chillers. The main objectives of this study are to measure and compare the HTCs of various refrigerants on plain and low fin tubes and also to find out the optimum fin density of the low fin tubes. To accomplish these goals, HTCs of three refrigerants are measured for the plain tube as well as 4 types of low fin tubes. All measurements are carried out at the vapor temperature of 39.deg. C with the wall temperature difference of 3 .deg. C ~ 8.deg. C. For all the refrigerants tested, a low fin tube of 28 fins per inch yielded the best performance among all the tubes tested. For the plain tube, the HTCs of CFC-11 and HCFC-141b were very similar and those of HCFC-123 were 10% lower than those of CFC-11.Thus, it can be concluded that HCFC-123 and HCFC-141b are acceptable as alternative refrigerants for CFC-11 from the view point of condensation heat transfer.
Condensing heat transfer characteristics of hydrocarbon refrigerants are experimentally investigated. Single component hydrocarbon refrigerants (propane, isobutane, butane and propylene) and binary mixtures of propane/isobutane and propane/butane are considered as test fluids. Local condensing heat transfer coefficients of selected refrigerants are obtained from overall conductance measurement. Average heat transfer coefficients at different mass fluxes and heat transfer rates are shown and compared with those of R22. Pure hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher values of heat transfer coefficient than R22. It is also found that there is a heat transfer degradation for hydrocarbon mixtures due to composition variation during condensation. Measured condensing heat transfer coefficients are compared with predicted values by available correlations. An empirical correlation for pure and mixed hydrocarbon is developed, and it shows good agreement with experimental data.
The two-phase closed thermosyphon is a heat transfer device capable of transfer large quantities of heat from a source to a sink by taking advantage of the high heat transfer rates associated with the evaporation and condensation of a working fluid within the device. A study was carried out with the performance of the heat transfer of the thermosyphon having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal micro grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphon is also tested for comparison. Water, methanol and ethanol have been used as the working fluids. The liquid filling as the ratio of working fluid volume to total volume of thermosyphon, the inclination angle, micro grooves and operating temperature have been used as the experimental parameters. The heat flux and the boiling and the condensation heat transfer coefficient and overall heat transfer coefficient at the condenser and evaporator zone are estimated from the experimental results. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing correlations. Imura's and Kusuda's correlation for boiling showed in good agreement with experimental results within ${\pm}20$% in plain thermosyphon. The maximum heat transfer rate was obtained when the liquid fill ratio was about 25%. The high heat transfer coefficient was found between 25o and 30o of inclination angle for water and between 20o and 25o for methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves. The micro grooved thermosyphon having 60 grooves shows the best heat transfer coefficient in both condensation and boiling. The maximum enhancement (i.e. the ratio of the heat transfer coefficients of the micro grooved thermosyphon to plain thermosyphon) is 2.5 for condensation and 2.3 for boiling.

In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC 134a and HCFC123 at various compositions were measured on a horizontal smooth tube. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3~8K. Test results showed that HTCs of tested mixtures were 11.0~85.0% lowed than the ideal values calculated by the mass fraction weighting of the HTCs of the pure components. Thermal resistance due to the diffusion vapor film was partly responsible for the significant reduction of HTCs with these nonazeotropic mixtures. The measured data were compared against thc predicted ones by Colburn and Drew's film model and a good agreement was observed within a deviation of 15%.

This paper deals with a prediction method for the condensation of ternary refrigerant mixture inside a horizontal smooth tube. Based on some reliable assumptions, the governing equations for the local heat and mass transfer characteristics are derived, and the prediction for the condensation of ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a, including R407C, is carried out. The local values of vapor quality, thermodynamic states at bulk vapor, vapor-liquid interface and bulk liquid, mass flux etc. are obtained for a constant wall temperature and a constant wall heat flux conditions, and the effects of the composition of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a on heat transfer characteristics are examined. The prediction result is also compared with experimental data for condensation of ternary refrigerant mixtures. The predicted wall temperature distribution has a similar trend with experimental data but the predicted local heat transfer coefficients are 20-30% higher than the experimental data.
In this study, condensation heat transfer characteristics were conducted with special heat transfer tubes of SH-C type. Experiments were carried out the saturated vapor temperature of 334K and the wall subcooling of 1.5-4.5K. The refrigerant was R-113 and the enhanced tubes used in the present study were SH-CDR, SH-CYR and SH-CHR. The experimental results showed that the condensation heat transfer coefficients of SH-C type tubes were about 23-66% higher than those of a low integral-fin tube. It was visualized that the condensed liquid on the outer surface of SH-C type tubes flowed continuously down unlike a low integral-fin tube and a plain tube, due to a 3-D extending fin on the outer surface of SH-C type tubes. As a result, the thermal resistance of the condensed liquid decreased and the heat transfer coefficient increased. Also, the enhancement ratio of SH-CDR tube was the highest, and it was about 9-11 times as compared to that of a plain tube.
Single phase and condensation heat transfer characteristics of ammonia in a horizontal tube have been investigated experimentally The horizontal test section is composed of smooth SUS316 tube for refrigerant flow, surrounding annulus for water flow, and temperature and Pressure measuring sensors. For single phase test, subcooled ammonia mass flux was varied from 320 to 501 kg/mrs and temperature was varied from 18 to $47^{\circ}C$. For condensation test, mass flux and saturation temperature were varied from 86 to 128 kg/$m^2$s and 34 to $47^{\circ}C$, respectively. The equations of Gnielinski Soliman et al., Traviss et at., Cavallini and Zecchin, Shah, Chen et al., Tandon et al., and Chilli and Anand were compared with the experimental data. New correlations are proposed based on the experimental results and the absolute mean deviation of the experimental data becomes 1.0% for single phase test and 4.9% for condensation test.
Condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted with the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger without oil in a refrigerant loop using R-l34a, R-407C and R-410A. An experimental refrigerant loop has been developed to measure the condensation heat transfer coefficient h$_{r}$ and frictional pressure drop $\Delta$p$_{f}$ of the various refrigerants in a vertical oblong shell and plate heat exchanger. The effects of the refrigerant mass flux(40∼80kg/$m^2$s), average heat flux(4∼8kW/$m^2$), refrigerant saturation temperature(30∼4$0^{\circ}C$) and vapor quality of refrigerants on the measured data were explored in detail. Similar to the case of a plate heat exchanger, even at a very low Reynolds number, the flow in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger remains turbulent. A comparison of the performance of the various refrigerants revealed that R-410A had the highest heat transfer performance followed by R-l34a, and R-407C had the lowest performance of the refrigerants tested. The pressure drops were also reported in this paper. The pressure drops for R-410A were approximately 45% lower than those of R-l34a. R-407C had 30% lower pressure drops than R-l34a. Experimental results were compared with several correlations which predicted condensation heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure drops. Comparison with the experimental data showed that the previously proposed correlations gave unsatisfactory results. Based on the present data, empirical correlations of the condensation heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor were proposed.tor were proposed.sed.
