Seismic performance of RC columns retrofitted using high-strength steel strips under high axial compression ratios

  • In this paper, the impact on seismic performance of an economical effective technique for retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) columns using high-strength steel strips under high axial compression ratios was presented. The experimental program included a series of cyclic loading tests on one nonretrofitted control specimen and three retrofitted specimens. The effects of the axial compression ratio and spacing of the steel strips on the cyclic behavior of the specimens were studied. Based on the test results, the failure modes, hysteretic characteristics, strength and stiffness degradation, displacement ductility, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were analyzed in-depth. The analysis showed that the transverse confinement provided by the high-strength steel strips could effectively delay and restrain diagonal crack development and improve the failure mode, which was flexural-shear failure controlled by flexural failure with better ductility. The specimens retrofitted using high-strength steel strips showed more satisfactory seismic performance than the control specimen. The seismic performance and deformation capacity of the retrofitted RC columns increased with decreasing axial compression ratio and steel strip spacing. Based on the test results, a hysteretic model for RC columns that considers the transverse confinement of high-strength steel strips was then established. The hysteretic model showed good agreement with the experimental results, which verified the effectiveness of the proposed hysteretic model. Therefore, the aforementioned analysis can be used for the design of retrofitted RC columns.

A Study on the Experiment of Represtressed Preflexional Composite Beams (RPF 합성보의 실험 연구)

  • The conventional preflex beams are designed by the method of paritial prestressing and allow the tensile stresses at the lower concrete of beams. As a consequence, most of preflex beams experience the tensile cracks under the service loads. This study was conducted to develop the most effective preflex beams, which do not allow tensile stress under the service load, by introducing additional prestressing called 'represtressing' at the lower concrete of beams. The objective of the study was accomplished by developing a computer analysis and design program and conducting experiments. Using the developed computer program, standard sections of the represtressed preflex beams were determined by computer modeling. In the experiment, two actual size of represtressed beams were tested under the imitated service loads. The results of test have shown that the performance of the represtressed preflex beams is generally excellent. A remarkable improvement was made in the design of preflex composite beams. Since the represtressed preflex beams(RPF) do not experience the tensile cracks under the service loads, the use of this beam for the bridge structures will lead to easy bridge maintenance and management. Furthermore, due to the low beam depth, high clearance and economical design can be realized in the bridge design using RPF.

Seismic Performance and Flexural Over-strength of Hollow Circular RC Column with Longitudinal Steel Ratio 2.017% (축방향철근비 2.017%인 중공 원형 RC 기둥의 내진성능과 휨 초과강도)

  • Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns with aspect ratio 4.5 were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable is transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratios of spirals of all the columns are 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The longitudinal steel ratio is 2.017%. The axial load ratio is 7%. This paper describes mainly crack behavior, load-displacement hysteresis loop, seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness and flexural over-strength of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variable. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications(Limited state design).
