  • A concept hierarchy represents the knowledge with multi-level form, which is very useful to categorize, store and retrieve the data. Traditionally, a concept hierarchy has been built manually by domain experts. However, the manual construction of a concept hierarchy has caused many problems such as enormous development and maintenance costs and human errors such as inconsistency. This paper proposes the automatic creation of concept hierarchies using the predefined hypernym relation. To create the hierarchy automatically, we first eliminate the ambiguity of the senses of data values, and construct the hierarchy by grouping and leveling of the remaining senses. We use the WordNet explanations for multi-meaning word to eliminate the ambiguity and use the WordNet hypernym relations to create multi-level hierarchy structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate significant differences of structural knowledges among the groups(high, middle, low) when the 6th grade subjects structured the concepts of the plane figures, triangle and quadrangle, by concept maps, and to analyse the features of concept maps according to hierarchy. For this purpose, the following two research contents were investigated: 1. Investigating significant differences of structural knowledge in the concepts of the plane figures using concept maps among the groups(high, middle, low). 2. Analysing the features of concept maps according to hierarchy. The structural knowledges represented on the concept maps of triangle and quadrangle which were drawn by the subjects were analysed by propositions, hierarchies, and cross-links. Subject-self Reports about how to make the concept maps were used to analyse the features of concept maps according to hierarchy. The conclusions drawn from the results were as fellows: First, there were significant differences among the groups in proposition links. Second, there wasn't my significant difference among the groups in hierarchy. Third, there were significant differences among the groups in cross-links, and Fourth, the results of analysing the concept maps by hierarchy showed that there were differences among the individuals in constructing the knowledges.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze hierarchy for high school students' concepts about genetics. The assessment of genetics related concept was conducted for 10th and 11th grade students and a hierarchy map was schematized based on the evaluation result using Knowledge State Analysis Method. Some differences were found when comparing the result of whole students' hierarchy with hierarchy on 7th national science education curriculum. In analyzing hierarchy by grade, concepts of highest and lowest level turned out same but some concepts of middle level changed. In case of analysis of hierarchy for concepts about genetics by score, as score was higher, the number of concept in lower level became larger and the relationship among concepts became more structurized. Following studies are required to develop specific teaching strategies for having effective genetics concept and conduct case study of applying the concept hierarchy through this method to class in the field.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychological hierarchy structure of science concepts and to determine the effective teaching order by comparing the teaching effects of the psychological hierarchy order with those of teaching order of the current text in order to inquire validating evaluation framework of science curriculum sequence. Key concepts were selected by tasks analysis in the seven units of elementary and secondary school curriculum. Concept formation tests were developed to evaluate each concepts achievement,. The test items were made according to each of the concepts based on 12 prototype tasks developed by Frayer(1969). To identify the students' psychological hierarchy the test items were administrated to elementary and secondary school students. Ordering theory was used to identify the students' psychological hierarchy. Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study as an experimental design. Teaching with psychological hierarchy order was applied tp experimental group and teaching with concept order described in the current text was applied to control group. The major results of this study are as followings: 1. The students' psychological hierarchy structures are different from logical hierarchy structures. 2. The science teachers' psychological hierarchy structures are different from not only logical hierarchy structures but also students' psychological hierarchy structures. 3. The mean score of experimental group applied psychological hierarchy order is significantly higher(p<.05) than the control group in the concept achievement.

  • This paper aims to propose a framework of content creating group with creativity under new convergence environments. The framework is built based on content concept hierarchy(deep/surface) relating with the creativity of group members. The diversity of group members(potential creativity) decrease and change into creative abilities in one unified view at each content concept hierarchy in time. To do this, three methods of building a creative group(interaction-base, direction-base, hybrid) are proposed. Cooperating processes and operators are designed to promote creative abilities in the content producing group. These cooperations are considering new media convergence industry's job road map(IPTV) and fundamental content attributes(semantic, narrative, discourse). In the framework, creative content is produced with the help of member's cultural openness, media richness and synchronicity, hierachical adaptability on dissimilarity. Deep level creativity of cognitive semiotics on moving image content is composed of psychological, transformational, situational creating abilities in the structure of group members. Designing analogy, metaphor, symbol operators help members to traverse deep structure of content concept hierarchy. Our framework has strong points to relate fundamental content deep structure with structure of content producing group and to induce creativity on cognitive structure of human being.

  • A hierarchy is defined as a system wherein its parts are interconnected with one another and the lower levels are constrained by the higher levels to various degrees, depending on the time constraints of the behavior. We illustrate that the concept of hierarchy is identified in the Baekdoodaegan frame, and that the Korean national area was hierarchically divided into many watersheds in many old maps. The Baekdoodaegan and Jeongmack were consistent with the hierarchy of climatic as well as spatial variables. It is evident from an old map that the concept was coined as early as in 1402. A typical configuration of Korean landscape, which was developed in the arrangement of village and surrounding landscape elements situated in a watershed, may be associated with the hierarchical approach to land and culture. Although current practices based on the concept are meaningful, further diverse studies are needed to improve ideas.

  • This study examined the knowledge structure constructed by children before formal instruction, and successive changes in the structural complexity of knowledge during the learning of the 'Structure and Function of Plants' unit. The researchers let the 5th graders draw the first draft of their concept maps in order to examine the pre-existing knowledge structure concerned with the unit and also four concept maps after completing every fourth lesson. Each concept map drawn by children on the basis of the previous one showed the degree of their current understanding on the structure and function of plants. The results revealed that only two levels of hierarchy and five relationships among the components of the first concept map(relationship, hierarchy, cross link and example) were proven to be valid in terms of conceptual relevance. According to the standard map, there was no change in hierarchy from the 2nd to the 3rd map, and in example from the 2nd to the 4th map. However, the gradual and successive increases of the scores in all components appeared in the children's maps throughout the unit. Knowledge restructuring occurred strongly in the early periods from the 1st to the 6th lesson, and the significant stable changes in tuning and accretion appeared throughout the whole lessons. The results also showed that there were no significant gender differences on the 5th grader's knowledge structuring.

  • Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is a widely used methodology for data analysis, which extracts concepts and builds a concept hierarchy from given data. A concept consists of objects and attributes shared by those objects, and a concept hierarchy includes information on super-sub relations among the concepts. In this paper, we propose a method for extracting Implication and Association rules from a concept hierarchy given a query by a user. The method also describes a way for displaying the extracted rules. Based on this method, we implemented an automatic tool, QAG-Wizard. Because the QAG-Wizard not only elicits relation information for the given query, but also displays it in structured form intuitively, we expect that it can be used in the fields of data analysis, data mining and information retrieval for various purposes.

  • This paper presents a Petri net approach for the control and monitoring of discrete event system. The proposed model is fuzzy Petri nets based on the fuzzy logic with Petri nets and the hierarchy concept. Fuzzy Petri nets have been used to model the imprecise situations which can arise within automated manufacturing system, and also the hierarchy concept allow to handle the refinement of places and transition in Petri nets model. These will form the foundation of a simulator-tool with manipulation interface for application of fuzzy Petri nets.
