  • This paper develops a computational model for estimating the ride quality of a cabover type large-sized truck in a double wheel bumpy ride test. The computational model is developed using ADAMS. To verify the developed model, an actual vehicle double wheel bumpy ride test is performed. In the test, the vehicle maintains a straight course with a constant velocity such that the front two wheels are passed the bump at the same time. The bump has the height of 60mm, and the width of 550mm. In the test, four velocities are used. They are 10kph, 20kph, 30kph and 40kph. Since the large-sized truck's center of gravity location is high, and its weight is heavy, it is a quite severe test condition to perform the test with more than 30kph velocity. In the test, vertical accelerations on the floor of the cab are measured. The measured accelerations are compared to the simulation results. From the comparison, it is shown that the developed model can predict not only the measured acceleration's tendency but also peak accelerations quite well. In this paper, the validated model is utilized to compare the ride quality between a vehicle with a multi-leaf spring and a vehicle with a tapered leaf spring in the front suspension system in a double bumpy ride test.

  • Despite extensive research efforts, the mechanism of the nucleate boiling phenomena is still not clear. A direct numerical simulation of the boiling phenomena is one of the promising approaches in order to clarify its heat transfer characteristics and discuss their mechanism. Therefore, many DNS procedures have been developed based on recent highly advancing computer technologies. This brief review focuses on the state of the art in direct numerical simulation of the pool boiling phenomena over the past two decades. In this review, the fundamentals of the boiling phenomena and the bubble departure and micro-layer models are briefly introduced, and then the numerical procedures for tracking or capturing interface/surface shape such as the front tracking method, level set method, volume of fluid treatments, and other methods (Lattice Boltzmann method, phase-field method and so on) are briefly reviewed.

  • A number of combat simulation models are scattered and the analytic solution approaches have experienced very difficult computational efforts. Today´s computer communication technology let people to do many unrealistic things possible and the use of those technologies is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the military operation. Both DIS and ADS are welled defined computer aided military simulations. This study discusses a simulation of stochastic combat network modeling through Internet space. We have developed two separate simulation models, one for clients and another for server, and validated for conducting studies with these models. The object-oriented design was necessary to define the system entities and their relationship, to partition functionality into system entities, and to transform functional metrics into realizations derived from system component behaviors. Heterogeneous forces for each side are assumed at any battle node. The time trajectories for mean number of survivors and combat history at each node, some important combat measures, and relative difference computations between models were made. We observe and may conclude that the differences exit and some of these are significant based on a limited number of experiments.

  • The paper does researches and analysis on the process of marine oil spill crisis response (MOSCR), and develops the marine oil spill crisis response simulation exercise system. The system developed by this paper is composed of four subsystems, including the training system of MOSCR, the geographical information system of MOSCR, the marine oil spill control and cleanup decision-making expert system, and the computer simulation exercise system. The paper builds up the applied model system of MOSCR. The system takes the marine oil spill crisis response geographical information system as the platform, which integrates all aspects of MOSCR. This system can offer an oil spill scene to the trainees and simulate the whole process of MOSCR on the interface of GIS.

  • Designing and constructing a proper simulator for real power plants requires extensive research in human engineering and computer science and integration of different fields of technologies such as system analysis, operational knowledge for nuclear plant, etc. A full scope replica type simulator for nuclear power plant is developed. The simulator has the same feature and operational functions as one in the main control room (MCR) of a reference power plant. The simulator provides the necessary training to recover or reduce damages from accidents that usually are unpredictable. This paper describes the configurations and characteristics for the simulator that is developed for Younggwang Nuclear Power Plant #3,4 which is the basic model of the Korean Nuclear Power Plant. The paper also describes technical aspects of Auto Code Generator that is used for developing the simulator. The successful development of the simulator will contribute to improve safety in operation of nuclear power plants.

  • Optimum packing of aggregate is an important aspect of mixture design, since porosity may be reduced and strength improved. It may also cause a reduction in paste content and is thus of economic relevance too. Several mathematic packing models have been developed in the literature for optimization of mixture design. However in this study, numerical simulation will be used as the main tool for this purpose. A basic, simple theoretical model is used for approximate assessment of mixture optimization. Calculation and simulation will start from a bimodal mixture that is based on the mono-sized packing experiences. Tri-modal and multi-sized particle packing will then be discussed to find the optimum mixture. This study will demonstrate that computer simulation is a good alternative for mixture design and optimization when appropriate particle shapes are selected. Although primarily focusing on aggregate, optimization of blends of Portland cement and mineral admixtures could basically be approached in a similar way.

  • Nonlinear dynamical behaviors in thermionic low pressure discharge are investigated using a particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation. An electrostatic PIC code is developed to model the plasma discharge system including the kinetic effects. The elastic collision, excitation collision, ionization collision, and electron-ion recombination collision are considered in this code. The generated electrons and ions are traced to analyze physical characteristics of the plasma. The simulation results show that the nonlinear oscillation structures are observed for cold plasma in the system and the similar structures are observed for warm plasma with a shift in values of the bifurcation parameter. The detailed oscillation process can be subdivided into three distinct mode; anode-glow, temperature-limited, and double-layer modes.

  • Nowadays traction motors in the urban rail transit vehicle are controlled by VVVF inverter and have capability of regenerative braking. The algorithms to deal with the regenerating vehicle in simulation for the DC traction power supply is introduced in this paper. Substations have to be separated from the system to represent reverse biased rectifiers in substations. The model of the trains in regenerative braking has to be changed from the ideal current source to the constant voltage source since the train input voltage has to be controlled below the certain train maximum voltage. Some mismatches are unevitable because the constraint of the regenerated power can not be imposed with the constant voltage source. The mismatches represent the unused regenerated power. A computer program is developed to verify the validity of the algorithm. The test run result shows the program behaves as it is expected and proves the algorithm's validity.

  • The validity of simulation has been well-established for decades in areas such as computer and communication system. Recently, the technique has become entrenched in specific areas such as transportation and traffic forecasting. Several methods have been proposed for investigating complex traffic flows. However, the dynamics of vehicles and their driver's characteristics, even though it is known that they are important factors for any traffic flow analysis, have never been considered sufficiently. In this paper, the traffic simulation using a multi-agent approach with considering vehicle dynamics is proposed. The multi-agent system is constructed with the traffic environment and the agents of vehicle and driver. The traffic environment consists of multi-lane roads, nodes, virtual lanes, and signals. To ensure the fast calculation, the agents are performed on the based of the rules to regulate their behaviors. The communication frameworks are proposed for the agents to share the information of vehicles' velocity and position. The model of a driver agent which controls a vehicle agent is described in the companion paper. The vehicle model contains the nonlinear subcomponents of engine, torque converter, automatic transmission, and wheels. The simulation has proceeded for an interrupted and uninterrupted flow model. The result has shown that the driver agent performs human-like behavior ranging from slow and careful to fast and aggressive driving behavior, and that the change of the traffic state is closely related with the distance and the signal delay between intersections. The system developed shows the effectiveness and the practical usefulness of the traffic simulation.
