  • The design of injection molded polymeric parts has been done empirically, since it requires profound knowledge about the moldability and causal effects on the properties of the part, which are not available to designers through current CAD systems. An interactive computer-based design system is developed in order to realize the concept of rational design for the productivity and quality of mold making. The knowledge-based CAD system is constructed by adding the knowledge-base module for mold feature synthesis and appropriate CAE programs for mold design analysis in order to provide designers, at the initial design stage, with comprehensive process knowledge for feature synthesis performance analysis and feature-based geometric modeling. A knowledge-based CAD system is a new tool which enables the concurrent design with integrated and balanced design decisions at the initial design stage of injection molding.

  • Geometric and thermal errors are responsible for major components of the errors of a computer numerically controlled turning center. The planar error of a CNC turning center are comprised of 11 geometric and thermal error components. The error synthesis model is formulated by homogeneous coordinate transformation method and expresses the effect of such error components on the planar error of a CNC turning center. In this paper, the sensitivity analysis of the model on the noises through sensing and the change of temperature is addressed. The sensitivity analysis show that the error systhesis model is robust on the noses and z planar error is much affected by the change of temperatures.

  • This paper addresses on the model synthesis and performance analysis of an engine mount featuring electro-rheological(ER) fluids which undergo a phase change when subjected to electric fields. A novel type of ER fluid-filled engine mount is devised and its hydraulic model is constructed. An equivalent mechanical model is subsequently obtained from the governing equation of the hydraulic model. The model parameters associated with the ER fluids are distilled from experimental investigations on the Bingham properties of the fluids. The distilled data are then incorporated into the governing model to undertake feasible work through computer simulations,. It is shown that the proposed engine mount has an inherent capability of controlling both the damping force and the resonance frequency. Other superior performance characteristics accrued from the proposed methodology are also evaluated.

  • In this paper, we proposed a wavelet phase-only filter modulation synthetic discriminant function joint transform correlator(WPOfSDF-JTC) for scale invariant pattern recognition, and an improved algorithm to reduce the filter synthesis time. Computer simulation showed that the proposed filter has better SNR than CWMF if input image has random noise and the improved synthesis algorithm can reduce the iteration time. We used frequency selective JTC to solve the problem of the optical alignment and eliminate the autocorrelation and crosscorrelation between each input image.

  • This paper presents an application of rule based expert system to GDS. Expert system is a computer-based system that uses knowledge, facts, and reasoning techniques to solve problems that normally require the abilities of human experts. Expert system can be classified as synthesis expert system, classification expert system or combination of these. The Expert system of GDS belongs to the synthesis type of expert system. GDS is a graphic design environment that automates complex and time consuming processes in the design phase of the grating production. There are methodical procedures in the design phase of gratings and each process needs the know-how of a skillful designer. User has to know...

  • Tight integration of product design and process planning in the early design stage would make bigger impact as wider spectrum of design and manufacturing alternatives can be pursued and evaluated. Thus the development of systematic computer-based support for this integration is desirable. For this integration and process planning in the early design stage. the systematic method to synthesize shape of part from functional requirements is crucial. This research presents the methods of functional decomposition from overall function or product and synthesizing shape of part based on functional relations extracted from functional decomposition using planetary gear transmission system as an example.

  • Recently due to the rapid development of speech synthesis based on the corpora, the performance of TTS systems, which convert text into speech through synthesis, has enhanced, and they are applied in various fields. However, the procedure for objective assessment of the performance of systems is not well established in Korea. The establishment of the procedure for objective assessment of the performance of systems is essential for the assessment of development systems for the developers and as the standard for choosing the suitable systems for the users. In this paper we will report on the results of the basic research for the establishment of the systematic standard for the procedure of objective assessment of the performance of Korean TTS systems with reference to the various attempts for this project in Korea and other countries.

  • A successful, computer-aided design support system can help a process designer focus on making effective design decisions, not merely tedious routine calculations. Such a system is essential to enhance quality of design in terms of economics, environmental benignity, reliability, robustness, and operability. Such a statement is even more accepted when applied to conceptual design problems, where gross design specifications are given while a combinatorial number of design alternatives exists. This paper presents an agent-based approach as a systematic and efficient way to design a design support system for the synthesis of conceptual chemical processes. An agent-based approach allows us to handle design knowledge as an object and thus greatly improve the modularity and reusability of that knowledge. Such modularity and reusability lead to the increased productivity in the development of a design support system and the increased ease in the relaxation of design decisions and the generation of design alternatives, both of which functions are critically important in dealing with the complexity and uncertainty of conceptual design problems.

  • The design and manufacture of injection molded polymeic parts with desired mechanical properties is a costly process dominated by empiricism, including the modification of actual tooling. This paper presents an interactive computer-based design system for injection molded plastic parts. This knowledge-based synthesis system provides a rational design strategy for injection molding and molded parts. It synergistically combines a rule-based expert system for hurestic knowledge with analytical process simulation programs. The theremomechanical properties of a molded part such as the effect of molecular orientation and weldline strength are predicted by the analysis programs; while the expert system interprets the analytical results from the process simulation, evaluates the design, and generates recommendations for optimal design alternatives. The heuristic knowledge of injection molding is formalized as production rules of the expert consultation system.

  • In this paper, we propose a maximum-likelihood estimation(MLE) method to obtain the location and the amplitude of the pulses in MPE( multi-pulse excitation)-LPC speech synthesis using multi-pulses as excitation source. This MLE method computes the value maximizing the likelihood function with respect to unknown parameters(amplitude and position of the pulses) for the observed data sequence. Thus in the case of overlapped pulses, the method is equivalent to Ozawa's crosscorrelation method, resulting in equal amount of computation and sound quality with the cross-correlation method. We show by computer simulation: the multi-pulses obtained by MLE method are(1) pseudo-periodic in pitch in the case of voicde sound, (2) the pulses are random for unvoiced sound, (3) the pulses change from random to periodic in the interval where the original speech signal changes from unvoiced to voiced. Short time power specta of original speech and syunthesized speech obtained by using multi-pulses as excitation source are quite similar to each other at the formants.
