  • Due to rapid progress in the performance of high-end computers, numerical prediction of fluid flow and flow-induced sound is expected to become a vital tool for aero- and hydro- dynamic design of various flow-related products. This presentation focuses on the applications of large-scale numerical simulations to complex engineering problems with a particular emphasis placed on the low-speed flows. Flow field computations are based on a large eddy simulation that directly computes all active eddies in the flow and models only those eddies responsible for energy dissipations. The sound generated from low-speed turbulent flows are computed either by direct numerical simulation or by decoupled methods, according to whether or not the feedback effects of the generated sound onto the source flow field can be neglected. Several numerical examples are presented in order to elucidate the present status of such computational methods and discussion on the future prospects will also be given.

  • In order to study noise barriers of complex shapes and to assess their efficiency, precise prediction model is required. For instance, geometrical approaches cannot deal with complex diffraction effects. So that in this paper, the time domain numerical computation method(Computational Aeroacoustics method) is applied to estimate noise reduction by diffraction and finite impedance condition. The CAA method can be used to calculate exactly the pressure of complex barrier shape with different impedance condition, such as T-shape, cylindrical edge and multi-edge noise barriers.

  • A computational study to capture the flow around a floor mounted greenhouse shaped HAWT model was performed using the commercial software PowerFLOW 4.2b. The simulation kernel of this software is based on the numerical scheme known as the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), combined with an RNG turbulence model. Simulations were performed at 60 and 140 km/h free stream air speeds. Selective results from these computational simulations are presented to show the capability of this numerical approach to predict the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics characteristics of the 3-D flow field around the HAWT model.

  • At liftoff, launch vehicles are subject to harmful acoustic loads due to the intense acoustic waves generated by propulsion systems. Because these waves can cause electronic and mechanical components of launch vehicles and payloads to fail, predicting and mitigating acoustic loads is an important design issue. This article presents the latest information about the generation of acoustic waves and the acoustic design methods applicable to the launch pad. The development of the Japanese Epsilon solid launcher is given as an example of the new methodology for launch pad design. Computational fluid dynamics together with 1/42 scale model testing were performed for this development. Effectiveness of the launch pad design to reduce acoustic loads was confirmed by the post-flight analysis.

  • This paper describes the analysis of aerodynamics and the prediction of airflow induced noise around simplified pantograph. First, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is conducted far several model to evaluate linear/nonlinear flow field characteristics due to high speed flow and the CFD results support the computational aeroacoustics. The accurate prediction of the aeroacoustic analysis is necessary for designers to control and reduce the airflow induced noise. We adopt the acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams- Hawkings (FW-H) equation and predict aeroacoustic noise.

  • A computational work of the impulse wave which is discharged from the open end of a pipe is compared to the Lighthill's aeroacoustics theory. The second-order total variation diminishing(TVD) scheme is employed to solve the axisymmetric, compressible, unsteady Euler equations. The relationship between the initial compressure wave form and the resulting impulse wave is characterized in terms of the peak pressure. The overpressure, pressure gradient and wavelength of the initial compression wave are changed to investigate the influence of the initial compressure wave form on the peak pressure of impulse wave. The results obtained show that for the initial compression wave of a large wavelength and small pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave depends upon the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave, but for the initial compression wave of a short wavelength and large pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave is almost constant regardless of the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave. The peak pressure of the impulse wave is increased with an increase in the overpressure of the initial compression wave. The results from the numerical analysis are well compared to the results from the aeroacoutics theory with a good agreement.

  • The paper deals with the computational approach in analysis and design of pantograph panhead strips of high-speed railway in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic concerns. Pantograph is an equipment such that the electric power is supplied from catenary system to train. Due to the nature of complexity in high-speed fluid flow, turbulence and downstream vortices result in the instability in the aerodynamic contact between panhead strips and catenary system, and consequently generate the considerable levels of flow-induced sound. In this paper, based on the preceding low speed wind-tunnel test and simulations, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics in low speed are analyzed.

  • In modern days, automobiles are the most important means of transportation. With the development of automobiles, noises generated during operation has been recognized as a significant factor of performance to provide drivers with better driving environment along with other passengers. In this study, drone noise(pulsating noise), generated at the rear window when its opened, is predicted to understand the physics of its phenomenon at various velocities. The compressible Navier-stokes equation will be used with $6^{th}$ order compact finite difference scheme to analyze the characteristics.

  • In this study, aeroacoustic characteristics of combined fan are investigated and noise was reduced by applying Serrated Trailing Edge which is known as the method to reduce fan noises. Unsteady CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis was carried out using Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) to figure out the combined fan's aeroacoustics and experimental results was used to verify simulation results. Results show that different BPFs are generated at the each inner fan and outer fan on the different frequency while Blade Passing Frequency(BPF) of general fans is constant on the entire frequency range. Boundary vortex and vortex shedding are suppressed or dispersed by applying the Serrated Trailing Edge to the inner fan. Furthermore, broadband noise and fan's torque are reduced.
