  • Stall inception in a high-speed centrifugal compressor has been examined. The main objective was to find stall precursor and to develop a reliable stall warning method. For stall warning, a method which uses the spectrum at impeller frequency is suggested. The use of the spectrum at impeller frequency as a stall warning method showed a warning time of about two hundreds impeller revolutions. This method uses only one sensor that it has made the stall warning method more useful. And the well-known traveling wave energy method proved to be a good method for stall warning also in a high-speed centrifugal compressor. The warning time was about one hundred impeller revolutions at lower speeds, and about one thousand impeller revolutions at higher speeds. The stall warning methods used here were found to be robust and reliable. Therefore, it seems to be promising to set up a reliable stall avoidance control based on this analysis.

  • Experimental investigation on the performance of a heat pump system using refrigerant mixtures is done. The condenser and the evaporator are double pipe heat exchangers of counter flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. The refrigerant mixture used in the experiment is R22/R142b. Experiments are performed by changing the compressor speed, composition on ratio of mixture, and the average temperatures of condenser and evaporator. The compressor work, heating capacity and the coefficient of performance are calculated. Results show that the heating capacity can be changed by varying the mass flow rate of refrigerant mixtures to meet the heating load. It is shown that the capacity control by changing the composition ratio is more effective than by changing the compressor speed. Under the condition where the external conditions are fixed and the heating loads are equal, the coefficient of performance has its maximum value near 50 : 50 mass fraction of the refrigerant mixture in this study.

  • With the aim to increase blade loadings and stable operating range in highly loaded compressors, this article has been conducted to explore, through a numerical parametric study, the potential of passive control using slotted bladings in cascade configurations. The objective of this numerical investigation is to analyze the influence of location, width and slope of the slots and therefore identify the optimal configuration. The approach is based on two dimensional cascade geometry, low speed regime, steady state and turbulent RANS model. The results show the efficiency of this passive technique to delay separation and enhance aerodynamic performances of the compressor cascade. A maximum of 28.3% reduction in loss coefficient have been reached, the flow turning is increased with approximately $5^0$ and high loading over a wide range of angle of attack have been obtained for the optimized control parameter.

  • Centrifugal compressors are widely used and each operating condition is different. However, it cannot be manufactured according to the every operating condition. In the this study, performance of compressor was evaluated with various rotational speeds of impeller and various stagger angles of diffuser in order to apply a typical model widely. A centrifugal compressor was designed and manufactured based on the design point. On this machines, an experiment was conducted and the performance was predicted at off-design point. The performance prediction was validated with the experimental result and the numerical result. Although the isentropic efficiency on the prediction was slightly lower than that on the experimental result due to the heat loss in the experiment, the pressure ratio was predicted well and also the predicted results were matched well with the numerical results. When the rotational speed of the impeller and the stagger angle of the diffuser were changed together, the compressor can be worked in the high efficiency region and avoided operating in the stall region.

  • For a pump or a compressor motor, a high periodic load torque variation is induced by the mechanical works, and it causes system vibration and noise. To minimize these problems, load torque compensation method, injecting periodic torque current, could be utilized. However, with the sensorless control method, which is usually utilized in the pump and compressor for low cost, the periodic torque current degrades the accuracy of the rotor position estimation owing to the inductance variation. This paper analyzes the rotor position and speed estimation error of sensorless control method with constant motor parameters under period loading. Assuming the constant speed by the accurate load torque compensation, the speed error equation is derived in frequency domain with inductance depending on the stator current. Further, it is also shown that the rotor position error could be minimized by compensating the inductance variation. The simulation and experimental results verify that the derived speed error model and the validity of the inductance compensation method.

  • This paper discusses the development of a 3.5 kW switched reluctance motor (SRM)-based electric air-conditioning (AC) compressor, focusing primarily on the design aspects of the SRM and the integrated controller. In addition to the increased price of rare-earth magnets, SRM's operation capability at high speed and high temperature makes the SRM a viable alternative to the permanent magnet motor for electrically driven automotive air conditioning compressors. A compact and energy efficient scroll compressor is designed and constructed. Two feasible SRM topologies are considered, in terms of efficiency, torque ripple, and acoustic noise. Compact drive electronics are designed and employed to drive the SRM-based compressor. The static and dynamic performance is validated by simulation and experiment.

  • The sensorless control of high efficiency air compressors using a permanent magnet type synchronous motor as an oil-free air compressor is quite common. However, due to the nature of the air compressor, it is difficult to install a position sensor. In order to control the permanent magnet type synchronous motor at variable speed, the inclusion of a position sensor to grasp the position of the rotor is essential. Therefore, in order to achieve sensorless control, it is essential to use a permanent magnet type synchronous motor in the compressor. The position estimation method based on the back electromotive force, which is widely used as the sensorless control method, has a limitation in that position errors occur due either to the phase delay caused by the use of a stationary coordinate system or to the estimated back electromotive force in the transient state caused by the use of a synchronous coordinate system. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method of estimating the position and velocity using a rotation angle tracking observer and reducing the speed ripple through a disturbance observer. An experimental apparatus was constructed using Freescale's MPU and the feasibility of the proposed algorithm was examined. It was confirmed that even if a position error occurs at a certain point in time, the position correction value converges to the actual vector position when the position error value is found.

  • This paper deals with an empirical model for decoupling control to control the refrigeration system effectively. The conventional control schemes of the system are mainly focused on representative two control methods, superheat control and capacity control. The capacity control is basically conducted to respond partial loading conditions on the purpose of energy saving. The superheat control is mainly carried out to maintain maximum coefficient of performance (COP). In the variable speed refrigeration system, the capacity and the superheat are controlled by inverters and electronic expansion valves respectively for saving energy and improving cost performance. The capacity and superheat can not be controlled independently because of interfering loop when the compressor speed and opening angle electronic expansion valve is varied. Therefore, we suggest decoupling model to eliminate the interfering loop at first. Next, each transfer function in decoupling control model is obtained from number of experiments.

  • An experimental study on the performance and instability development characteristics of a centrifugal compressor equipped with a cambered variable diffuser has been performed with varying diffuser vane angles. The test was conducted at the design speed of 20,800 rpm and the 80% design speed of 16,640 rpm for 5 diffuser angles : 65$^{\circ}$, 70$^{\circ}$, 75$^{\circ}$, 77.5$^{\circ}$, 80$^{\circ}$ The steady performance test results showed that choking mass flow rate decreases and total pressure ratio increases with a narrowed surge margin as the diffuser vane angle increases. Unsteady pressures were measured using high-frequency pressure transducers at the inducer and the diffuser throat to investigate the instability phenomena such as rotating stall and surge inside the compressor. From the unsteady measurements, it is found that the transient process from rotating stall to surge was mainly affected by diffuser angles. The results of the present study can be applied to the instability control of the centrifugal compressors using a variable diffuser.
