A preliminary design procedure for a multi-stage axial compressor is developed, which is based on the stage-stacking method. It determines the flow coefficient which gives rise to the design conditions required such as pressure ratio, mass flow rate and rotational speed for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. With this flow coefficient, blade radii, every stage and compressor performance characterics such as stage pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency etc. are calculated by stacking each stage performance characteristics. It is shown that there is an optimum number of stage which results in the maximum of compressor overall efficiency for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. A test design was tried for three different geometric design constraints, and comparison with a previous study shows that present procedure could be used reliably in determining the number of compressor stage in preliminary design stage.
This paper presents a simple thermo-physical model of reciprocating compressors for household refrigerator-freezers. The compressor model has been developed based on thermodynamic principles and large data sets from the compressor calorimeter tests. The input data are compressor geometry (displacement and clearance volume), compressor speed, suction pressure and temperature, discharge pressure, and ambient temperature. The model can estimate mass flow rate and compressor power consumption within 3.0% accuracy, which is not much larger than measurement errors associated with calorimeter testing under ideal conditions.
The performance test of a centrifugal compressor for APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) which is developed by the collaborative research of KARI and Samsung TechWin has been conducted. The investigated compressor consists of a curved inlet, a centrifugal impeller, a channel diffuser and a plenum chamber. The experiments were carried out in an open-loop centrifugal compressor test rig driven by a turbine. For three different diffusers, overall performance data were obtained at 80%, 90% and 97% of design speed. For the initially designed wedge-type diffuser, test results showed that the compressor was operated at a higher mass flow rate than the design requirement. By reducing the diffuser throat area, the compressor operating range was shifted to lower mass flow rate range. The test result of redesigned wedge-type diffuser showed high pressure loss. To reduce the diffuser loss, diffuser inlet radius was increased and airfoil-type of diffuser was adopted. This airfoil-type diffuser showed reasonal results in terms of design requirement.
Thermodynamic modeling of low-pressure scroll compressor was developed by combining continuity and energy conservation equation. Suction gas heating was considered using energy balance inside the low pressure shell. Pressure, temperature and mass of refrigerant-22 as a function of orbiting angle were calculated by solving the governing equations using fourth order Rung-Kutta scheme. Motor efficiency was taken by experiments with a variation of frequency. The developed model was applied to the analysis of an inverter driven scroll compressor with a variation of frequency, pressure ratio and operating conditions. The model was verified with the experimental results at the same operating conditions. The developed model was adequate to predict performance of the inverter driven scroll compressor as a function of operating conditions. Calculated parameters from the model were discharge temperature, mass flow rate, power input, COP, and thermodynamic properties with respect to orbiting angle. To enhance the performance of a scroll compressor, it is essential to diminish leakage at low frequency level and improve the mechanical efficiency at high frequency level.
Auxiliary port which had been known to be used to reduce the expansion loss of a refrigeration system was applied to a R134a reciprocating compressor in a household refrigerator cycle with an intention of improving the compressor performance. Effects of the auxiliary port on the compressor performance was investigated by a computer simulation program. When a simple hole was made on the side wall of the cylinder as an auxiliary port and surrounding gas inside the compressor shell was assumed to be drawn into the cylinder through the hole, maximum COP improvement of 1.66% was obtained. With auxiliary port equipped with a plate type of check valve, maximum COP was raised to be 1.99%. COP improvement was more distinctive with decreasing the discharge pressure; COP improvement was 5% with discharge pressure of 7 bar.
This paper introduces a new concept compressor in which piston orbits in the cylinder having an annular space formed between two concentric circular walls. In this configuration, two gas pockets are formed with $180^{\circ}$ phase difference: one between the wrap of the orbiting piston and the inner cylinder wall and the other between the piston wrap and the outer cylinder wall. This alternating feature of gas compression and discharge processes yields several advantages such as low torque variation and low gas pulsation. Computer simulation program has been developed to evaluate the compressor performance. The volumetric, adiabatic, and mechanical efficiencies of the orbiter compressor are calculated to be $85.6\%,\;97.2\%,\;and\;95.2\%$, respectively, when it is used as an air compressor.

In general, it may be advantageous to measure the pressure pulsation near a valve to detect a valve defect in a linear compressor. However, the acceleration signals are more advantageous for rapid classification in a mass-production line. This paper deals with the performance improvement of fault classification using only the compressor-shell acceleration signal based on the relation between the refrigerant pressure pulsation and the shell acceleration of the compressor. A transfer function was estimated experimentally to take into account the signal noise ratio between the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant in the suction pipe and the shell acceleration. The shell acceleration signal of the compressor was modified using this transfer function to improve the defect classification performance. The defect classification of the modified signal was evaluated in the acceleration signal in the frequency domain using Fisher's discriminant ratio (FDR). The defect classification method was validated by experimental data. By using the method presented, the classification of valve defects can be performed rapidly and efficiently during mass production.
Performance analysis of the automotive air-conditioning system is conducted by using computer simulation, and performance tests are carried out by using the climate wind tunnel in order to verify simulation. Evaporator and condenser were modeled by using empirical correlation which was obtained from calorimeter data, and compressor was modeled by using map based method. The steady state thermodynamic conditions of refrigerant satisfying mass and energy balance were assumed in the simulation program for automotive airconditioning system. The system performance was analyzed by finite difference method until differential air enthalpy between evaporator inlet and outlet becomes converged. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental results at most operating conditions. Variation of discharge temperature and pressure of compressor, outlet temperature of evaporator, cooling capacity, and COP were investigated in term of air volume flow rate for evaporator, compressor capacity, compressor speed, superheat of thermostatic expansion valve, and diameter of suction line.
